And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb

(Luke 1:39-44)

I n these days... After kicking off the summer with a very exciting Vaca-tion Bible Study program that brought to-gether many volunteers as we shared some of the greatest teaching of Jesus by the Seashore, we continued to feed ourselves with God’s word by the beach and the bay. Throughout the summer we met every Wednesday alter-nating between TOBAY Beach and Oyster Bay for an outdoor bible study! We continued our journey through Mark’s gospel and provided a quiet, but faithful public witness to those around us. This fall we will continue our Thursday morning meditation and bible study, but our evening bible study will move to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays to enable council mem-bers and school board members to join with us before their scheduled meetings!

The Seniors in our community are leaping for joy on news that our primary form of out-reach, The Shepherd’s Table, to our closest neighbors, The Shepherd Hill Apartment resi-dents, will resume on Thursday, September 20th at noon. This year, however, we will meet twice as often! We will gather every week, (with some holiday exceptions) for our fellow-ship luncheon. The menu will alternate be-tween pizza and sandwiches. The suggested donation for lunch will remain at $3.00. Ex-pansion of “The Shepherd’s Table” is a won-derful example of how Good Shepherd is reaching out, joyfully following the Spirit’s leading.

The Good Shepherd Fund Committee has been meeting under the chairmanship of George Milhim to pave the way for ministry grants to again be awarded to qualified appli-cants. At a time when many churches and faith-based organizations are being forced to cut programs, it is truly a blessing that we will have the joy of being able to provide a hand up to new and relevant outreach ministries!

The young children and adult students in our worshipping community will be leaping for joy soon as we soon begin a new year of Christian Education on Sunday mornings. Mr. John Hinsch, who has served for many

years as the principal of Lutheran High School is now Good Shepherd’s new Sunday School Superintendent. His joyful passion for the gospel is contagious and following a very successful recruitment campaign for educators and facilitators we are ready to begin our program year. Please remember to spread the word that Good Shepherd is the place for Christian education. Sunday school registration will be held at 9:00am on Rally Day, September 9th! Our homebound members are enthused that our team of Stephen ministers and Eu-charistic ministers is growing! This means that they will be visited more often with the sacrament of Holy Communion by ambassa-dors of their Good Shepherd faith family. If you wish to join these lay ministers of Christ in visiting those who are unable to physi-cally join us in worship you will soon have the opportunity to receive training to do so!

The junior and senior youth groups and even grammar school age youth will be leap-ing soon now that our church council called Mr. Bobby Stainkamp to serve as our new Youth Director. Mr. Stainkamp, with the help of our youth committee, will help to develop an exciting new Christ centered, service based youth program.

Come and leap for joy with the rest of God’s Children at Good Shepherd! Accept the invitation to be a bearer of Christ to and for the rest of God’s children. Experience the blessings that are waiting for you. Be here on Rally Day September 9th at 9:00 for our fall kick off in the gym hosted by our ministry teams and our Sunday school.

Come and experience real transformation here at Good Shepherd!

Our new Youth Director, Bobby Stainkamp is very excited to be joining our staff at Good Shepherd. Working with children has always been his passion and led him to pursue a career as an educator. Bobby earned both a B.M. in Music Education, and a M.A. in Music Theory & Composition from Long Island Uni-versity C.W. Post. While completing his Masters De-gree, Bobby served as the Elementary Music teacher at Trinity Lutheran School. This year, he will be their Computer Teacher as well as the Assistant Band Direc-tor. A member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Man-hasset, Bobby chaperoned the 2012 ELCA Youth Gath-ering in New Orleans this past July. He is looking for-ward to making experiences like this gathering a part of our youth experience here at Good Shepherd. Part of Bobby’s objective as Youth Director is to provide a friendly and positive place for young men and women to come and discover who they are and what they are capable of becoming. We, too, are very excited to have Bobby Stainkamp join our staff and look forward to establishing a solid, enjoyable program for our younger family members.

Our website now has a calendar feature that you should refer to regularly to stay abreast of new events even before they are officially announced! The calendar in our newsletter is good for planning but is not always final at the time of publication. Dates change. Meet-ings get rescheduled or added. Of course, we always announce these changes in our weekly bulletin and fridge notes, but our website is the most current source. In addition to this nifty feature, you can also access your Good Shepherd family members’ contact informa-tion immediately through our members network. Hear Pastor Eric’s Sunday sermon any day of the week! Play it for your friends if the spirit moves you to do so! There is no reason for anyone to feel out of touch or uninformed about everything that is going on here at Good Shepherd. We’re just a click away at www.ourshepherdlives.org. Put us in your favorites and always have us with you anywhere and every-where!

The church choir can no longer stand singin’ with the elderly member who keeps forgettin’ words and singin’ off key. Either he goes or they go. So a church committee visits him and explains that he’s been kicked out of the choir. As his eyes well up, he tells them that when he dies he wonders if he’ll be kicked out of heaven’s choir, too. As soon as they leave, he dies. “Far away his voice is sweet and he sings his heart’s desire/Where there are no church committees and no fashionable choirs.”

(from “Trouble in the Amen Corner” written and recorded by Archie Campbell)

During my twelve years at Good Shepherd, I am sure that the Music & Worship Committee never made a visit to “kick someone out of the choir!” Now, more than ever, new choir members are needed to replenish our faithful but weary ranks. The combined length of service for current and former choir member totals well over two hun-dred years! They will not tell you this, but I will tell you that each and every choir member feels responsible for being there on Sunday morning. They feel terrible when they have to miss church since they realize that this will put more pressure on the group as a whole. Speak to any choir member and they will tell you that rehearsals are

generally painless and even enjoyable! In addition they will tell you all about the fabulous choir parties and get-togethers that are held throughout the year. Ask them about the feeling of pride and accomplishment they have when the group “nails” the anthem on Sun-day morning or when a huge musically-driven service (such as Christmas Eve or Easter) is complete.

If you have ever considered serving the church with the gift of your time and talent, NOW is the time! You have the talent! If you have a spouse or friends in the choir al-ready, please consider joining in order to spend more time with

them. If you want to learn some music and develop your voice, come on in! The company is great and this choir strives to grasp heavenly ideals; no one is turned away and everyone has love for the Lord and for their fellow members. Please call or text Teresa’s cell phone at (515) 343-2763 or speak to any choir member if you wish to join us.

OUR ANNUAL FALL HARVEST FESTIVAL is neither school run nor church run. It is Good Shepherd run, and in order to make our Oc-tober 27th Fall Harvest Festival a success, we need your help. There are so many different aspects of this event that need planning and volun-teers, so we need as many volunteers as possible. As of the end of Au-gust, only four people have signed up to help. If you are interested in helping to coordinate or volunteering to participate in this exciting gathering, please sign up in the narthex as soon as possible.

UPDATE FOR SEPTEMBER 2012

WITH COUNSELING SITES LOCATED IN: NASSAU SUFFOLK MANHATTAN QUEENS WESTCHESTER

Prepared especially for LCC Association Congregations & Schools

Each day we wake up to news of tragedy

in our family, community, the nation or the world. We hear about a shooting incident, dev-astating storms, car accidents, murders,

wounded soldiers or the breakout of war. Perhaps the tragedy occurs closer to home--

loss of a loved one after a long illness, a sud-den death by accident or suicide, a tragic fire or financial reversals. The loss of a parent,

spouse or child may be so overwhelming that we believe we cannot move forward with life.

Traumatic events can cause severe emo-tional responses including unpredictable emo-tionality, flashbacks of the event, anxiety at-

tacks and/or physical responses such as head-aches, nausea, or heart palpitations. Whether

one is affected directly or indirectly, an assess-ment by a licensed mental health professional is essential to help in processing the numerous

issues related to these extreme stressors. Withdrawal, depression or extreme changes in

personality should be treated in order to pre-vent continued traumatization and to lessen long term psychological damage so that heal-

ing can begin. Children affected by trauma may show

changes in behaviors and routines. Caregiv-ers may observe regression to previous habits

such as thumb sucking or bedwetting. These changes may also include unexplained emo-tional outbursts, problems at school, a preoc-

cupation with tragedy, extreme withdrawal or intense anxiety. While these are all normal

short term responses to tragedy, children and adults may need the help of a professional mental health therapist to determine construc-

tive ways to move forward in their own lives. Anniversaries of traumatic events may

trigger upsetting memories. The first time that survivors experience holidays or special events without their loved one may be particularly dif-

ficult. Interpersonal relationships may be strained.

It is important to remember that there is

no one standard response or pattern of behav-ior for all. Some people respond immediately to traumas and others may have delayed reac-

tions of many months or years later. Certain factors affect the length of recovery time in-

cluding the intensity or degree of the loss, the individual’s ability to concentrate during emo-tionally challenging situations and other previ-

ous incidents of trauma. During times of stress, our lives may

seem overwhelming. Our loved ones may worry about our emotional stability. If you are concerned with the mental health of another

person, the best course of action is to consult with your doctor or a mental health therapist

to ascertain a course of action to help this per-son recover. Be an effective listener with your loved one, offering consolation rather

than advice.
