CBS Student Society Day Every September, students at CBS introduce and promote their respective student-run organizations to all incoming recruits, featuring a vast and wide range of interests. From hunting to tennis and from MUNs (Model United Nations) to journalism, the list of potential appeal is virtually non-exhaustive. Most organizations, known as being "for students, by students", are evidently student-run. The organizations at CBS can be classified in different categories, depending on the range of interest: - Business organizations: BBB (Breaking Bad Business), CBS Case Competition (CCC), CBS Shipping, FinanceLab, HA Invest (targeting Norwegian students), MarketingLab, Suitable For Business, Talent Link. - Personal development organizations: 180 Degrees Consulting, CBS Building Tomorrow, CBS Debating Society, CBS Improv, CBS International Choir, CBS Jam, CBS Jazz, CBS Life, CBS Radio, International Week Copenhagen (IW Copenhagen), Oikos Copenhagen. - Political and/or leadership organizations: AIESEC, CBSMUN (CBS Model United Nations), CBS Talks, CBS Junior Consultants, CPH Management Consulting

Every year, CBS Student Society Day offers students the potential to get engaged

in various organizations and events.

Words of Wisdom (WoW) Here is our first ever instalment of Words of Wisdom (aka WoW). This week’s topics include social life, housing, and studies at CBS. 1. Why did you choose to study in Denmark? “I didn’t really choose to study in Denmark because of the country but mostly because CBS was one of the best-ranked schools I could go in Europe. But the fact that I lived in Denmark for one semester when I was younger motivated me to choose to study here, since I already knew some people and also experienced the excellent standard of living.” – Patricio Gilly, 21, Mexico “Well, it’s a good university and seeing as I am French and Swedish, I get to stay close to Sweden.” – Natacha Ljungdell Cassagneres, 20, France 2. Did you have problems finding a place to stay? “Yes, I did. I have moved five times in one year. However, I got some very important life experiences, I met a lot of nice people and go tto know different parts of the city. Right

Each month we ask experienced CBS students for advice, experiences, and helpful tips for new students.

now, I am still waiting to be offered a student dorm.” – Barbora Rusiňáková, 20, Slovakia “It is a challenge to find accommodation in Copenhagen, especially close to the city center. There are a lot of people looking for an apartment, and there are a lot of new people coming every season.” – Raluca Leustean, 24, Romania 3. What are the first three things you think about when you hear the word ‘Denmark’? “Health, liberty, opportunity.” – Raluca Leustean, 24, Romania “Rain, burgers, difficult language.” – Natacha Ljungdell Cassagneres, 20, France “I think about an extremely developed country, bad weather, and CBS.” – Patricio Gilly, 21, Mexico “Cold weather, high taxes, SU.” – Romario Guran, 20, Romania “Crazy drinking culture, open-minded people, and of course CBS.” - Barbora Rusiňáková, 20, Slovakia

The ISA Newsletter has, over the past few years, gone through a period of revisions, changes, and modifications. We understand even our newest version can be a strain – having to scroll through articles without the help of an index page, looking to get more information or wanting to ask questions without contact info, and so on.

However, yours truly will be humbly introducing its first online newsletter in no more than two weeks.

Starting October 1st, all your electronic needs will be met. All articles, including reports about ISA, contact information, and upcoming events, will be posted on our website: http://cbsisa.wix.com/cbsisa. The articles from this edition can also be found there.

You can also follow us on Facebook at Copenhagen Business School International Students or ask us questions at [email protected].

Global Student Network (GSN) This year, the International Student Ambassadors (ISA) have started a new initiative at CBS – an initiative to ensure a smooth integration process in Denmark to all new incoming global (non-EU) students. This is assured by the establishment of a supportive network that assists these students in various aspects such as airport pick-ups, answering questions about CBS and the Danish way of living and most importantly, we have a sympathetic ear for our new global students at CBS. The concept began its journey half a year ago, when 5-6 students from ISA started brainstorming about how ISA could make the first semester a better experience for our global students. Soon it became explicit that a network of both new and current CBS students would be beneficial for the students, and also meeting an Ambassador upon arrival might lessen the student’s anxiety.

In July, we invited all new global students to join our network and had a positive acknowledgment of 43 students who appreciated our initiative. Around 10 students made use of our pick-up service and also our first Global Student Network event on August 25th was a success. This event was filled with enlightening presentations, informative discussions, chatting with fellow students and Ambassadors, and a quiz about Denmark. We have planned four further, both in-house as well as outside events, for our global students during the fall, and the second event will already be held on the 23rd of September with the theme Cultural Café.

4

Our overall goal is to provide the global students with a network of both current students (ISA ambassadors)

and new fellow global students. A major challenge for most of the global students might be to be the only ones of their nationality, or to have difficulties in getting to know new people. Hence, this network gives us the opportunity to connect the global students with each other in more relaxed settings, and at the same time to provide

them with useful and important information. We are looking forward to seeing all of you at our Cultural Café the 23rd of September – please remember to sign up through the event on our Facebook group “Global Student Network”. If you are a global student and have not signed up yet or have any problems, don’t worry - contact us at [email protected] and we will be glad to add you to the group on Facebook. Welcome to CBS!

“This network gives us the opportunity to connect the global

students with each other in more relaxed

settings” - Cathrine Kjaer

CBS Life Article of the Month: CBS Christians Being an atheist, watching Morgan Freeman in Bruce Almighty may be the closest I ever come to God and the feeling of interacting with the divine. It seems like young people in Denmark today tend to get very nervous at the mention of anything related to religion. It may therefore seem strange that a religious student organization has been established at CBS this year, but despite my reservations, I kept an open mind and had the chance to interview one of the founders of CBS Christians, Peter Gelardi Mikkelsen, a 24 year-old coffee-loving CBS student who is currently studying his second year of International Business and Politics. How would you describe your own relationship to religion? I have experienced some amazing things in my life that have made me realize that it makes more sense for me personally to believe in God than not to believe. What’s the idea behind, and purpose of CBS Christians? We were a group of Christian people at CBS, who thought it could be nice to create a space where students could go and meet new people, take some time off from their busy schedule, and look at the world from a higher perspective. Our purpose is just this, providing young people with this place to go. We think our organization covers many different purposes by letting people connect and challenge each other through discussing different topics. We also wants to stress that there’s room for everyone in our organization: Jesus didn’t reject anyone, and we won’t either. How are you going to achieve this purpose? We have meetings every Thursday at Solbjerg Plads, and normally the meetings start around 16:00 and last approximately 45 minutes. The meetings normally start out with 15 minutes where people can sit down, talk, and catch up after a busy week of studying. This includes eating some pizza and enjoying a very chill vibe. After this, we invite one of Copenhagen’s best youth pastors to deliver a short sermon. After the sermon, we have 15 minutes of Q&A which eventually develops into an open debate where everyone who feels like it can participate. After this, some members usually go to Nexus together and grab some beers, and some of our members stay and continue the debate. The majority definitely ends up at Nexus and we don’t hide the fact that we love Nexus! Who can join and how? Our meetings are open for everyone, regardless of nationality, age, study program and even faith. You don’t even have to be religious to participate. We don’t have a formal application process for becoming a member, you simply just show up at our meetings if you want. Everyone can find the place and time for our meetings by joining our Facebook group which is simply named “CBS Christians”. People with questions are also more than welcome to send us an email at [email protected]. Even-though you don’t need to be registered as a member to attend our meetings, it should be noted that if you want to vote at our general assemblies, you are expected to register as a member first.

"With a conversational, yet straightforward tone, we guarantee that after reading our blend of insightful commentary and reporting, you’ll be pretty damn prepared to make the most of your time at CBS. We are always open to feedback from our loyal readers!” – CBS Life mission statement

This fall, ISA is introducing its newest journalistic initiative – CBS Life’s Article of the Month. In collaboration with CBS Life, we will be publishing one of their monthly articles most relevant to International Full-Degree Students (IFDS) and vice-versa. You can find once of our posts on their blog every month.

CBS Life defines itself as “CBS’ student blog, written for students, by students.” Their aim is to report news both on and off campus, and they explore a wide variety of topics. From student politics to the best bakery in Copenhagen, there is something to accommodate all tastes.

Here at ISA, and when it comes to our newsletter, we want to make sure you leave more informed, optimistic, and excited than when you came. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask at [email protected].

How do you think young people in Denmark feel about talking about religion? A lot of people are actually very curious and positive when they ask me about my religion. I think many people in Denmark think about some of the bigger questions we deal with through religion and, therefore, people tend to be really interested in hearing more about my faith. Has it been a challenge for you, establishing this organization in a predominantly atheist culture? It has actually been the exact opposite. Establishing this organization with the help of CBS Students has been an interesting and positive experience. I can’t answer for everyone else, but my personal experience is that even though some people feel very challenged by the idea of religion, and the idea of a religious student organization, they keep a very positive and kind way of approaching us when asking questions. Our organization does not claim to have the correct answers to the big questions in life, instead, we strive to raise the best questions possible for discussion because we believe that it is valuable for people to discuss the important, and sometimes very difficult, elements of life.

How does the future look – what can we expect from you here at CBS? We have a big event coming up at the Semester Start Party at Nexus. As we all know, there usually is a really long line of people waiting to get into the party and, therefore, CBS Christians are going to provide some entertainment for people waiting in line. At the party on the 4th of September, we are going to walk around in the queue quizzing people. We are wearing red t-shirts with hearts on, so it’ll be impossible not to notice us. We have created a quiz called “Love Thy Neighbor,” and in this game, the people who show the most love for their neighbor in the queue can win some awesome prizes. For instance, if you upload a photo of yourself which shows the love you have for your neighbor and you hashtag it with #cbsneighborlove you can win an awesome prize. We also have an event planned for Student Society Day on September 18th, where we are creating a lounge area at Solbjerg Plads where people can come, relax, and get a taste of the chill vibe we have at our weekly meetings. I can reveal that our lounge at Student Society Day will be serving free coffee and waffles – two things most students find irresistible. Anything else you want to tell the people? To end things off I really want to give a shout out to CBS Students and thank them for the huge help they’ve been with the start-up of our organization. Everyone who has an idea for starting a new student organization at CBS should get in touch with the awesome people who work for CBS Students – these people can really make a difference when you are starting from scratch.
