Escorted Transportation Service/NW

9

Want to volunteer, but don’t want to be

tied down to a schedule?

We’re just the volunteer opportunity for you! Volunteering a little of your time as a driver with Escorted Transportation Service Northwest (ETS/NW) is the ideal way to help others. It’s the most flexible volunteer opportunity around.

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2006 with the single goal of providing escorted transportation for the seniors in our community so that they are able to get to their crucial medical appointments. Since 2006, we’ve provided over 26,000 rides to seniors in our local communities.

You decide how often/when you can volunteer. We know your time is valuable and we work with your schedule – YOU choose when you’d like to drive! You do not have to commit to a certain amount of time every week; you can go online or stop by the office and find out what appointments we’ve got available. YOU let us know if one of them works for you.

continued in right column

continued from left column

You may drive as frequently or as little as you’d like. You’ll be scheduled to pick a local senior up at their home, drive them to their medical appointment, wait with them and then bring them home again. We provide volunteer training for all drivers, and, as ETS/NW volunteers drive their own vehicles, we also provide liability insurance.

Our volunteers are obviously amazing people! Our average volunteer has been with us for six years, so they clearly enjoy what they do. Join the ETS/NW family. Help others like yourself remain independent for as long as possible by getting them to their crucial medical appointments.

For more information, stop by and speak with Dallas at the ETS/NW office in the Senior Center, call us at 847.222.9227, visit our website at www.etsnw.org, or give us a “Like” on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/etsnw.

Arlington Heights Senior Citizens Commission

21

Congratulations, Terry McElroy!

The Village of Arlington Heights Senior Citizens Commission is proud to announce Mr. Terence McElroy as the 10th recipient of the annual Kenneth Hood Senior Service Award. Mr. McElroy will be presented with the Award at the Village Board of Trustees meeting on September 18th.

Mr. McElroy has spent nearly seventeen years (18,370 documented hours) as a volunteer at Catholic Charities Northwest Senior Services located at the Arlington Heights Senior Center. He began volunteering full time with the organization in January 2001 and continued through 2006. From 2006 through present, he has donated between 400 and 800 volunteer hours per year.

Initially, he used his corporate experience and expertise to evaluate, assess and recommend improvements and changes in practices and procedures employed by Catholic Charities Northwest Senior Services. Early on in his career as a volunteer, Terry became known as the go-to expert in nearly all matters of benefits. He became certified by the Illinois Department on Aging on the Community Care program, and was trained in the Illinois Volunteer Money Management Program, which helps older adults in overseeing their finances and paying their bills. He is also a trained Senior Health Insurance Program counselor and an expert on Medicaid. Mr. McElroy came to Catholic Charities as a Corporate Executive Loan through General Mills, to provide his expertise and business perspective for two years. Seventeen years later, Terry is still volunteering and still reluctant to be credited with his volunteer service hours.

Cindy Gunderson, Catholic Charities Northwest Senior Services summed it up: “Terry found his niche helping those seniors who most needed his help. We are so fortunate he chose us seventeen years ago.” And, like Ken Hood, whom this award is named after, Mr. McElroy has been helping people with a zest for life and a sense of humor.

Every day, seniors throughout Illinois fall prey to smooth-talking con artists who call them up and tell all kinds of convincing stories to get their money.

The Office of the Illinois Attorney General wants you to know that it’s shrewd, not rude, to hang up the phone when a stranger asks you to send them money or give out your personal information.

The following are some common warning signs of telephone scams. If you spot any of these signs while on the phone, don’t think twice: JUST HANG UP!

· They contact you · They want your personal information · They promise a big reward · You must pay them first

(continued from left column)

Consider placing your phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry, if you haven’t already done so. This will block most unwanted telemarketing calls. So, once your number is on the registry, you’ll know that any telemarketer who does call you is probably up to no good. You can register your home phone or cell phone online at www.donotcall.gov or by calling 888.382.1222 (TTY: 866.290.4236) from the phone number you wish to register.

If you’ve fallen victim to or want to report a telephone scam, please contact the Illinois Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Hotline at 800.386.5438 (TTY: 800.964.3013) or Senior Fraud Helpline at 800.243.5377 (TTY: 800.964.3013).

Q) You could turn off many of the lights and still be bright enough in here plus save money. There are times when rooms are brightly

lit and no one is there. A) Thank you for your suggestion. We can try it. Please be aware that we kept the lights for both ambiance and security, not to

waste precious resources.

Q) Please add a beginning Canasta class in the fall. Many people are interested. Q) Most of us played Canasta as kids, but can’t remember the rules. A) Thanks for the suggestions. We’ll pass your request along to the Park District here in the Senior Center. They operate our recreation programs. Good to know that there’s a built in audience.

Q) Please put a notice in the newsletter that bingo is played every Wednesday at 12:15. A) Thank you, it has been in the newsletter (along with a nice picture of the bingo callers). We’ll continue to list the day and time.

Q) I noticed at least one Bingo player has trouble reading the Bingo cards. She and I would like to have large print. A) Thanks for the suggestion. There are large print cards available. Simply ask the Bingo caller to provide you with one.

Q) Put a path of rocks or something from front door to where the tree mound is so we wouldn’t have to walk where the cars are. A) We like that you took the time to let us know about it. We’ll need to speak with you for more clarification because we can’t figure

out how to make it safe.

Q) Add bid whist card games. A) Thanks for the suggestion. We’ll refer it on to the Park District who plans our recreation programs. Just guessing that we’ll need

to hear from more people that are interested.

Q) Tell the sweaty jerks to take a shower before they come into the reading room - PHEW! A) Thanks for pointing this out to us. Sweaty jerks listen up. Continued on p. 26

Q) (Regarding) Current Events. George does a wonderful job of leading the group and has a very gentle way of controlling the group, allowing each person to state their opinions.

Q) A fan, ceiling or any kind in the current events room. We are dying. Q) Please put a fan in the current events room. Once the door is closed, the air is gone. A) Thank you for the nice comments about George. We happen to agree with you. We’ve already put the fan in.

Q) Please add a shelf in the ladies’ room so we don’t have to put things on the floor. A) Thanks for your suggestion. We’ll try it again (we had shelves in all the bathrooms, and unfortunately a few of our people tended

to forget important personal belongings in the bathrooms on those shelves).

Q) Please clean the fans in the health club. Q) Thank you for cleaning the fans. Q) Thank you for cleaning the fans. Q) Thank you for cleaning the fans. A) Thanks for the suggestion. We already did. You’re welcome. You’re welcome. You’re welcome.
