MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD CHAIR I hope that you will join me in attending the North Shore Seniors' Health Expo. The Expo will serve as a kick-off to a Dementia Friendly North Shore—a joint tri-municipal effort between the District of West Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver and the City of North Vancouver. This all-day event will take place on September 10, 2016. Some of the workshops will focus on Dementia and

Alzheimer's disease, while others will include information about exercise and fall prevention, downsizing, planned giving and creating a legacy. These are just a few of the many workshops. For more information please get in touch with our front desk at 604-925-7280.Rumours have it that SACS (Seniors' Activity Centre Shop) on 21st Street is opening on September 6, 2016. The location of the shop will be where our flower room is now located. This shop will carry some of the many articles that are not sold at our Flea Market along with many other donations from our SAC members during the year.Another new feature coming to our Centre is a Coffee Bar that will offer espresso, lattes and all your other favourite coffee drinks. Work on this project will start during the usual August shutdown. We hope to have the new Coffee Bar up and running by early September. What better way to spend a rainy day, than to go shopping at SACS on 21st Street followed by a leisurely cup of coffee at our new Coffee Bar. Elmer Pellerine Chair

DunDARAVE PLAYERS

Since we reported on our over 20-year history at the Seniors’ Activity Centre, back in 2011, we have continued operating guided —until recently—by Kay Young on her piano. Sadly, Kay has gone onto higher pursuits, but she has fortunately been ably replaced by Trish McGeer as musical director and pianist. Over a dozen of us seniors, playing a variety of musical instruments are now under Kay’s capable guidance. Few, if any, of our players actually live in “Dundarave”, instead, we are scattered up and down the North Shore, anywhere from West Bay to Deep Cove. Our players’ ages range from some being in their nineties, others in their eighties and seventies, and even a few youngsters in their sixties. We always welcome new people to help us entertain North Shore seniors and play/practice together on Friday mornings. We continue to perform at North Shore seniors’ residences and care homes, charging fees to cover band equipment and expenses. At each year-end, surplus fees are donated to the Seniors’ Activity Centre. Big News: This year, the total of our annual donations will exceed $10,000!

WHY DO I HEAR BUT NOT UNDERSTAND?Did you know that 47% of adults age 60-79 have hearing loss?1

Your hearing difficulties could be caused by damaged hearing hair cells inside your inner ear (cochlea). When damage occurs in the high-frequency areas of the cochlea, speech may sound garbled and comprehension may become difficult.

A comprehensive hearing assessment will identify the challenges you face and what can be done to help improve both your hearing and your comprehension. It takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a referral from your doctor, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever.

12 SENIORS’ SCENE SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER 2016

Perhaps we could start with some facts: In 2015 there were approxi-mately 50,000 volunteers hours recorded in our Centre and on any given day an average of 80 people give their time to perform various duties. The cafeteria requires a large number of these volunteers. There is always a need for assistance in food preparation, servers, bussers, hosts, cashiers and more. The cafeteria is a busy, bustling hive of activity and a very cheerful place to volunteer. People are always happy when they are eating or having a coffee and one of the delicious cinnamon buns.

“Let’s write an article about our volunteers,” somebody said. A chorus of approval was heard, lots of heads nodding and it was unanimous. Where to start? How on earth can mere words describe the many hours spent, knowledge, experience and co-operation of our hundreds of volunteers?

VISIT US ONLINE WESTVANCOUVER.CA/SENIORS 13

It has been said before and it will be said again: The West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre would not be as popular or successful as it is without the dedication of the hundreds of volunteers who make it all possible.

They all deserve our appreciation, gratitude and our sincere thanks for their never ending efforts.

Volunteering on the front desk, phone desk or in the office is an excellent place to meet people. There you will be signing up new members, renewing existing memberships and registering people for the many courses the Centre offers. You will also be answering the telephone and dealing with questions that you haven’t the foggiest idea how to answer! However, there is always help close by. There is also a need for people to assist in the many activities that are offered such as the bus outings, driving, strolling, conversation groups, crafts, snooker, garden club workshops, wood working, annual Flea Market and many, many more.

So, why get involved? Well, speaking with our Centre’s volunteers it seems the main reasons are to remain functional, meet people and to be busy as long as possible. Volunteering also has many perks such as the four Volunteer Appreciation events put on by the staff each year. There is an afternoon tea in February, breakfast in April, BBQ in July and a fun event during Oktoberfest.

Now that we have your interest, you’re probably wondering how to get involved. All you need to do is email Caroline Brandson (Coordinator of Volunteers) [email protected] and she will get you started. You will be required to take a Volunteer Orienta-tion course, and if your interest is in the cafeteria, short training courses are offered on a regular basis.
