Christmas appeal

St Martin-in-the-Fields is a community of hope, reimagining church and society through compassion, culture, commerce and congregational life. Our vision statement is, ‘At the heart. On the edge.’ We welcome you to the heart of our life. Our autumn lectures focus on Encounters with God, one another, and the stranger. We are joined by Archbishops of Canterbury past and present, and by our new Bishop of London, Sarah Mullally. For the seventh year we are hosting the only national conference in which people with lived experience take the lead in articulating theological perspectives on disability. This year’s conference is entitled Something Worth Sharing. In November at our Patronal Festival we mark the centenary of the armistice that ended the First World War, with the theme, St Martin: Soldier for Peace. Our whole community is galvanised each year by the BBC Radio 4 Christmas Appeal with St Martin-in-the-Fields. This year marks the 92nd appeal, which will be broadcast on 2 December.Christmas is coming. You will want to book early for our many Christmas concerts and make a note of the dates of our Advent and Christmas carol services. The Christmas Shop in the Foyer, with many charity Christmas cards and other delights, opens on 1 October and Christmas cards are available from 9 September. Join us for a warm welcome in the Café in the Crypt – and consider our spaces for event hire at Christmas and all the year round.Revd Dr Sam Wells, Vicar

Last year, the BBC Radio 4 Christmas Appeal withSt Martin-in-the-Fields raised a remarkable£3.1m, because so many generous people gave onan unprecedented scale, taking us over £3m forthe first time. Monday 17 September – Monday 19 NovemberEncounters: an exhibition by Nicola GreenOver the past ten years, Nicola Green hasdocumented interfaith meetings between theworld’s religious leaders including formerArchbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams, former UK Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, HisHoliness Pope Francis, Reverend Desmond Tutu,His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the Grand Mufti

Shaykh Ali Gomaa of Egypt, and many others.Green diligently recorded her observations, collecting and creating thousands of drawings, photographs and artefacts, and it is this archive ofcollated material that forms the basis of Encounters.Encounters invites viewers of all beliefs, or none, tocontemplate faith, leadership and identity.

people through The Connection at St Martin’s, ourhomelessness centre in Trafalgar Square, and theVicar’s Relief Fund (VRF), which provides crisisgrants to prevent homelessness, reaching rightacross the UK. Two years ago, we also establishedthe St Martin’s Frontline Network – a network offrontline workers and organisations around theUK – to harness ideas, share best practice and findthe best solutions together. The Network now has10 partners and over 1,000 individual membersbased across the UK – from public, voluntary andstatutory sector agencies.Every element of St Martin-in-the-Fields Charityis working to support people away fromhomelessness. When someone is supported by The Connection, or with a grant from the VRF, the journey from that moment on is driven by the individual. Yet behind them will be theencouragement, resource and stability to supportthem every step of the way. In recognition of this,we’ve called the theme for the 2018 Appeal‘Journey Together’. We want to reflect the wide-reaching and compassionate support from somany people and partners.

Pianist Warren Mailley-Smith returnsto St Martin-in-the-Field for anotherevening of virtuosic piano mastery witha programme including Beethoven’s‘Moonlight’ Sonata, Liszt’s HungarianRhapsody No 2 and Gershwin’sRhapsody in Blue.

When did you start playing?I don’t remember ever not playing thepiano. As soon as I could walk, apparently I couldn’t keep my fingersoff the black and white keys, althoughit was very random. My parentsshowed me the basics at 3 years oldand I had my first lessons when I was 5.

Did you always know that you wantedto be a concert pianist? No, not at all. I worked my waythrough the grades quite quickly andstarted giving public performanceswhen I was 13. Playing the piano wassomething I enjoyed doing and wasgood at, but I didn’t decide to pursuemusic professionally until I wasstudying Law at University. Whensomeone pointed out I was regularlyskipping classes so I could practiseRachmaninov 2nd Piano Concerto; I finally knew where my heart was.

Which of the pieces that you will beperforming on Tuesday 16 October doyou find the most challenging and why?Every piece of music has its ownchallenges. But from a technical pointof view, the Liszt Hungarian RhapsodyNo 2 puts the greatest demands on theperformer’s fingers. It’s extremely fast, with a lot of repeated notes, jumps andstretches with both hands doing verydifferent things at the same time. Theonly way to play it really is throughmuscle-memory. It is great fun to play, hear and watch, so I can’t wait to play itat St Martins!

Karl JenkinsThe Armed Manby CandlelightTuesday 6 November, 7.30pm

In 1991, Welsh composer Karl Jenkinswrote a choral ‘Mass for Peace’ entitledThe Armed Man. Commissioned by theRoyal Armouries Museum for theMillennium celebrations, the work wasdedicated to victims of the Kosovocrisis and is an anti-war piece based onthe Catholic Mass. Using texts from avariety of different religious andcultural sources, Jenkins sought toreflect on ‘the most war-torn anddestructive century in human history’ and look towards a morepeaceful future.

This special performance of The ArmedMan launches the Sound of St Martin’sAutumn Festival 2018, marking thecentenary of the end of the First WorldWar with a series of concerts forRemembrancetide. In addition to theJenkins, St Martin’s Chorus and theChoral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields will also sing works byEdward Elgar, Ralph VaughanWilliams and John Tavener.

This concert will be conducted byEmily Dickens and Andrew Earis.
