Don’t miss our September program with Jean Grastorf, who will demonstrate the use of poured watercolor washes to create the illusion of light falling on, through and around objects, while retaining the beauty of the white paper. Finally, the 50th Annual Membership Exhibition is here. The show opens on September 9th with the awards ceremony and reception on Saturday, September 21st. 144 artists submitted 349 entries and 81 paintings were ac-cepted into the show. We are really proud of this year’s exhibition.

Our Fall paint-out is early this time and will be in Paris, Texas on Sep-tember 27, 28 and 29, so get busy and sign up now. We had 32 artists at the Nacona paint-out this past Spring.

Let’s get the Fall season kicked off with a Bang !

Our September meeting will be on a new night in a new meeting room. I know we artists hate change but we’ve been able to secure the use of the “larger”, “cooler” Asbury Hall at Lover’s Lane Methodist for our monthly meetings. We plan to have several tour guides on hand for the meeting just to make sure some of us don’t end up in the same room we’ve been using for the past few years.

SWS purchased a video camera to use in enhancing the artist demonstrations at the meetings. Now all the late-comers who have to sit in the back, can still see the demonstrations with our projected videos. Jody Graham has accepted the job as our new videographer and I know he will do a great job.

Sherry Daerr and Cindy Daunis have both accepted the job of “Official” photogra-phers so we hope to have more photos of our events and meetings to share with the membership.

I have appointed Judith Pafford our new Technical Support chair. She comes from a background in computers and the internet and will be available to assist mem-bers with photographing, sizing and up-loading their paintings for entries into the membership show as well as other events.

As host of this year’s exhibition of the Western Federation of Watercolor Socie-ties, SWS set a really high bar for future exhi-bitions. A huge number of our membership pitched in to make the show successful, and I’ve received numerous compliments from the other society presidents thanking us for making the annual even so special.

The 50th anniversary party at El Do-rado Country Club in July was such a pleas-ant event. Members had a chance to see and read 50 years of our archives from cop-

A native Texan, Jo Williams has been painting professionally for about thirty years. She is a ver-satile painter choosing her sub-jects from the world around her. Much of her work is inspired by her travels primarily throughout the southwestern United Sates.

Jo has lived in Denton, TX for almost forty years where

she is very active in the arts community recently having completed six years service as chair of the City Commis-sion for Public Arts. She has a degree in art education from the University of North Texas and has been teaching privately for about thirty years including community educa-tion classes for the University of North Texas. A popular teacher, she conducts work-shops throughout the south-west including Texas, Arkan-sas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma, and Mex-ico. In the summer of 2000, she taught in the Colorado Plateau Painting Workshop at Flagstaff, AZ. In addition to teaching, she gives demon-strations for area art organiza-tions and judges regional art exhibits. Currently she teaches classes at the Center for the Visual Arts in Denton.

Jo holds signature memberships in Southwestern Watercolor Society since 1991 and the Society of Water-color Artists. She is also a member of the Kingston Na-tional Registry of Who’s Who. Her work has been exhib-ited in numerous regional and national juried exhibi-tions. She has won a number of awards including Best of Show in the Texas Neighbors Art Competition in Irving and the North Texas Area Art League Annual Juried Exhibition (now VAST) in Denton. Williams and her husband Johnny won the prestigious Community Arts Recognition Award

(CARA) in Denton in 2003.

In 2008, Jo was invited to paint an orna-ment for the White House Christmas tree to repre-sent the 26

th Congres-

sional District. Williams attended a reception at the White House for all the artists. The ornament re-mains stored in the Smith-sonian.

She has had several solo exhi-bitions including an invitational exhibit at Culver-Stockton Col-lege in Canton, Missouri and an invitational exhibit at the Center for Visual Arts in Denton. Her work is included in many private collections and public collections including Raytheon, Ben E. Keith Co., Denton Publishing Company, City of Denton, and the Greater Denton Arts Council.

Jo’s husband Johnny is retired and is very active working with the community theatre as an actor, director, and set builder. He also sings with two local choirs. She has one daughter and one granddaughter who also live in Denton.

Tom Johnson, a tribute….to a treasured member.

Much of the information for these “Bits of History” was gleaned from the SWS History 1963 to 1994 which was compiled by Tom Johnson and his committee and sold to the membership, now a collector’s item.

Tom had been a faithful to the Whitney classes which led to the 1963 organization of North Texas Watercolor Society, promptly re-named Southwestern Watercolor Society.

A native Virginian, Tom was a graduate of the University of Virginia, trained architect and a big fan of painting in watercolor. (Architects used to do renderings of their structures in watercolor.) Through the years, the University of VA repro-duced some of his paintings of the campus build-ings for sale in their gift shop. You probably know that most of those buildings were designed by Thomas Jefferson.

Tom was a very reserved, gentle person, but helped lead the paint-outs, held other offices and became president of SWS for 1980 – 1981. His paintings reflected his interest in architecture, maritime subjects and landscapes.

Ginny and Tom had 7 children. Daughter, Trish Dimon, also has a flare for painting in water-color.

Once at a SWS meeting, Tom learned that my guest was from Virginia. Eager for news of home he invited Sara and me to his home for lunch the next day. Ginny was away on business, and the true Southern Gentleman prepared a lovely lunch for the three of us. See? His roots were still in Virginia.

It turned out that Tom and I were born within 3 weeks of each other in 1920. Ginny hav-ing preceded him, passed on in 2012. Tom John-son was a treasure to the History of SWS in so many ways including as a founding member.

PAST LEADERS at the 50 year anniversary celebration

There was quite a gathering of past presidents at the Anniversary Party at El Dorado Country Club and many of them had funny stories to share with the members. Walt Davis, president from 1991-92, brought a painting members painted for him because he was moving to the Panhandle, with Jonesy's FLY in it. Jonesy McConnell, president from 1992-93 and again from 2002-03 remembered a time when the monthly meeting venue changed on a monthly basis.

Of course, Naomi Brotherton's stories were the best. She remembered trips to New York to paint with Ed Whitney, early beginnings for SWS and the first exhibit Harwood K. Smith held for the group in his "barn".

The 2013 - 50th Annual Membership Exhibition May the Best Ever !

The 2013 SWS membership show officially opens on Monday, September 9th.

Shipped art must be received by Friday, September 6th and hand-delivered art will be taken in on Saturday, September 7th between 10:30AM and 1:30PM at PFamily Arts in Plano.

The awards reception is set for Saturday, September 21st from 6:30PM to 8:30PM and you won’t want to miss it. Hanging Around Texas is hanging the show again and Breadwinners is catering the reception as they did last year.

Many thanks go out to the show Co-Chairs, Gayle Ledbetter and Gaylord O’Con for putting this marvelous show together and to Jo Moncrief for her hard work on the entry take-in.

Out of 349 entries, Jean Grastorf, this year’s juror, selected 81 paintings, and boy, are they good ones. Also, 13 members will receive their SWS signature status for being accepted into the show. Congratulations to them and all 144 artists who entered this year. It is a beautiful show.

Jody Henderer Burns will be featured in the new Splash 15 book coming out in July of 2014. The February 2014 issue of Watercolor Magazine (released Dec. 2013) will also have an article about Jody and her work. Editor Kelly Kane saw her work in the TWSA show and called for an interview.

Sue Prideaux is featured in the July/Aug Artscope Art Magazine and is the August fea-tured artist at Hope Gallery, Bristol, RI.

Sharon Giles received a Best Watermedia award for "Green Mansions" in the Irving Art Associa-tion Juried Members Show in May. She has two works in the Irving Art Center's Art Connections Show in August, and in September will have acrylic monotypes in two shows: "Cat Tangle" in the IAA Animal Art Show and "Cat Dance" in the Society of Watercolor Invitational.

Jane E. Jones was featured in a 2 person show in Lake City, Colorado in August. She was the featured artist along with Michael Underwood – a photographer.

Gail Delger had her painting, "Nesting" ac-cepted into the Rocky Mountain National Wa-termedia Show.

Karin Michele Anderson was featured artist at Garret Gallery in McKinney for July/August, took 3rd place in mixed media collage at DeSoto Art League, and has a painting in the MAC member-ship show.

Doris Vasek is having a one woman show of 40 paintings at the Forney Arts Council's Gallery of the Arts at Crumbzz, 212 South Bois d'Arc Aug 1 - Sept 12. Crumbzz is open Tues-Fri 8am-2pm, Sat-Sun 8am-3pm, closed Mondays.

Cecy Turner won First Place in the 43rd Women Artists of the West National Exhibition in July, juried by Karen Vance. She has just received her Signature Member status in American Women Artists (AWA).

Nel Dorn Byrd judged the Watercolor East Texas exhibition in August & conducted a two day workshop held at Stephen F Austin University at Nacogdoches. She also presented a demo & critique in August for the Ardmore Art Group at the Goddard Art Center in Ardmore, OK.

Ron Bigony and Michael Holter were accepted into the 2013 Annual Open Exhibition for the National Watercolor Society. There were 84 paintings accepted out of 933 entries.

Darla Bostick is exhibiting at SWS Membership Show, the 12th Annual Irving Arts Animal Exhibit, the Richardson Public Library with the Richard-son Civic Art Society, the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens show, and in the Society of Watercolor Artists 2nd Annual Invitational Exhibition at the Focus Gallery in the Irving Arts Center. She is

also teaching watercolor classes at the Hobby Lobby in Denton and hosting her annual Art Workshop/Retreat at Ghost Ranch in NM 13-19 October. www.darlabostick.com.

Jimmy Maqouirk’s painting "Last Year's Cotton" was accepted in the Plano Art Associa-tion's "Change" Show, Aug 17— Sept 6.

Betty Jameson won First Place at the Wind River Art Guild's National Fine Art Show, Du-bois, WY. Two SWS members, Barbara Hackney and Maryann Stephens, will have their art work on display and for sale in The Fort Worth Art of Preservation show at the Fort Worth Commu-nity Art Center from Friday September 6th, gallery night, through September 28th.

Thanks for the Remembrance of the FIRST 50 years

Spread out before us on long tables and three projection screens we could review the 50 years of Southwestern Watercolor Society history, thanks to the enthusiasm of Gaylord O’Con, Mickey Archer and the SWS Boards of Directors.

Gayle Ledbetter was our hostess at the El Dorado Country Club in McKinney, the perfect ambience for our celebration.

Every detail of the evening was so appropriate to the event, including a printed souvenir agenda at each place setting.

SWS even had a three tier Birthday Cake in three different flavors decorated with a color palette and brushes made of

icing, which were so real that someone tried to pick them up before the cake was to be cut.

Jo Taylor AWS, SWS, now of Rockwall, joined me to represent the charter members, so few of whom are still with us. Jo lived in Pittsburg, TX, and hosted SWS paint-outs and Whitney class events numerous times.

This mark of distinction that SWS has attained with current membership of over 400 is due to the courage of the members to promote watercolor as an important, viable medium. Hopefully some of you will be there for the 100th year celebration, and will recall to those present this special time in 2013.

Japan/Korea/USA International Watercolor Exchange Exhibition 2013

An invitation was extended by Japan Watercolor Federation (JWF) and Korean Watercolor Society (KWS) to Kenji Nishikawa and Soon Warren to hold a joint Watercolor Exhibition to include USA watercolorist. The following USA artists will be participating: Nel Dorn Byrd, Gail Delger, Colleen Erickson, Jeff Good, Judy Mason Eldridge, David Maxwell, Barbara Millican, Kenji Nishikawa and Soon Y. Warren. The Japan/Korea/USA International Watercolor Exchange Exhibition 2013 will be held at the gallery in the Korean Embassy in Tokyo, Japan and opens on 12 November 2013.
