PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” Maya Angelou

Summer is ending with a bang.

Hurricane Harvey tore through Houston and east Texas leaving thou-sands of people stranded without a home or belongings. In a few hours, they went from citizens to evacuees. I have been amazed at the reaction of the American people in a time of need. They stepped up in a big way. We live in a great country!

Closer to home, the SWS 54th Annual Membership Show is hanging at the Eisemann Center in Richardson. The show is a wonderful selection of 81 paintings. Con-gratulations to all the SWS members that were selected by Ms. Keiko Tanabe for the show. This year the awards will be over $11,000. Laura Drumwright has a fantastic show and reception planned. Robyn Jorde designed and produced an amazing catalog and other show graphics.

Keiko Tanabe will be providing her demonstration for the September membership meeting. Keiko has become an international watercolor star and a must see. Her painting style is loose and fast with a lot of life and light.

The SWS Officers and Committee Chairs have been hard at work reviewing policy, finances, and activities for the coming year. We are always looking for volunteers to help. Lou Bono has helped clean up operations and record keeping with the implementation of Dropbox for filing and inter-board communication.

The SWS Fall Paint Out is the first weekend in October. Joe Mraz and Ron Bigony put togeth-er a fantastic program of plein air painting and fellowship in Marshall, Jefferson, and the Caddo Lake Area. This is your chance to paint alongside SWS’s best of the best plein air painters.

Lou Bono is in the process of hiring the workshop artists for 2019-20. Contact Lou if you have a favorite artist you would like to submit for consideration as a future SWS workshop artist.

We will be returning to the traditional painting exchange for our Christmas Party this year. I hear Jonesy is working on new material. We will be making some exciting announcements about this soon.

I am proud of all the volunteers who give so much time and energy to SWS. Thank you each of you for a job well done.

Keep painting and never stop!

Gaylord O’Con, sws2017-18 SWS President

KENJI NISHIKAWA Spotlight on Artist of the Month

The most peaceful times of my childhood in Japan were spent sketching with watercolor. From my brush came scenes of the busy cargo harbor of Tokyo, the ancient city in Kyoto, and the quiet fishing villages of countryside in Japan.

I graduated with a degree in Electronics Engineering, then moved to the USA in 1970. I remained in the elec-tronics engineering field and later in corporate management throughout my career. I traveled extensively in Europe, Asia and USA on business. During those trips I was drawn to the beautiful landscapes, powerful cityscapes and the ordinary people living in the cities and villages. These visual experiences have been my mo-tivation to paint watercolors.

I am a self-taught watercolorist who paints watercolors intuitively and with much emotion. Some artists call me a worshiper of a light and shadow with hidden beauty. I have received no formal art education in any art school or attended any workshops. I am just enjoying the challenge of how high I can reach the artistic platform by myself.

I have coordinated several watercolor exhibition exchanges between Watercolor USA Honor Society and Japan Watercolor Federation. This has led me to continue a joint group show in two countries. It is interesting to see the different tools and techniques used for watercolor paintings, but most of all to find the different points of view with unique aesthetic sense.

There is one old oriental quotation I like which is in public domain. “Good painting makes viewer want to sit in front of it, Very good painting makes viewer want to be inside the painting and play in it, Great paintings makes viewer want to have a house built inside the painting and live there forever, and the greatest painting makes viewer would like to die in it.”

My work has been collected by Art museums, Doctors offices and many individual art lovers in Japan and USA. I am a signature member of Watercolor USA Honor Society, Western Federation Watercolor Society, South-western Watercolor Society, Texas Watercolor Society (Purple Sage), Society of Watercolor Artists, Texas & Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition.

Southwestern Watercolor Society’s 54th Annual Member Exhibition hangs in the Eisemann Center in Richardson August 30 through September 30. Juror Keiko Tanabe is the featured artist at the SWS September meeting. The awards recep-tion will be Sunday, September 24th, at the Eisemann Center 4:00-6:00 pm.

The SWS Fall Paint-Out is October 6th and 7th in Marshall and Jefferson, TX. There are some great places to paint, and we have a great deal on rooms at the LaQuinta in Marshall, TX. Please call Ron Bigony 903-235-7216 or Joe Mraz 903-736-9697 to get your name on the list.

On August 5th the Memorial Recep-tion in memory of Jo Taylor, one of our founding members of SWS, was attended by our president, a past president and other members and friends of SWS. The reception was hosted by her two daughters and a son-in-law.

This photo appeared on the screen presentation along with many other photos and Jo’s award-winning paintings.

The photo is of our mentor, Edgar A. Whitney, who encouraged the beginnings of SWS as he taught in Dallas and other cities in Texas and the south each year for about 25 years. It was snapped during a class lesson with Jo observing, cir-ca 1975.

Jo had won 3 AWS awards before SWS created its Signature Membership. In those days to enter American Watercolor Society shows the artist had to ship the framed-with-glass paintings to New York City for the judging…. a very cum-bersome job for a gamble!

I submit this information, lest we forget….
