Catechetical Sunday, What Does That Mean? This weekend, on the third Sunday of September, we celebrate Catechetical Sunday. The Church sets aside this Sunday each year to identify and acknowledge those who have answered the call of the Holy Spirit and volunteered to share their faith with others. In our parish these dedicated individuals are our school teachers and our Religious Education catechists.
The theme of Catechetical Sunday this year, as determined by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, is “Stay With Us”. This is a scripture reference to the disciples walking to Emmaus when Jesus is ready to leave and the disciples ask him to stay with them.
This is what catechists do. They walk the journey with others and stay with them. They accompany those who are looking to learn more about Jesus. Catechists don’t have all the answers, but they share their life experiences of the Risen Lord. They help break open the scriptures. They help to open the eyes of the heart.
In today’s gospel, Jesus uses three parables to talk about the Father’s unconditional love for each of us. This is one of the most important facts of our faith. God loves each and every one of us unconditionally!
However you came to know Jesus’ love in your life, someone taught you and demonstrated that love for you. Home is where it hopefully starts and catechists work with families to strengthen our faith beliefs.
St. Paul tells us that Jesus “came into the world to save sinners” and that we have to be “examples for those who come to believe in him for everlasting life.” Again, this fits the role of a catechist.
We are grateful for all those who live their faith and willingly share it with others.
Mrs. Terry Navarro

NOTES FROM THE RECTORY:
Sra. Terry Navarro

What is RCIA and Who is it For? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process to help the unbaptized become familiar with the Catholic faith community. Through this process, people may choose to enter the Catholic Church. The inquiry phase allows seekers the opportunity to see what being a Catholic is about.
Those who have been baptized in different faith tradition may also participate in a process to find out what the Catholic faith offers and how it is different from the faith into which they were baptized.
We also have a process for baptized Catholics who have not received Eucharist and/or Confirmation.
If you would like more information about any of these options or if you are not sure which is the right one for you, give me a call (Terry at 773‐767‐1246) and I would be happy to answer your questions! (The phone number is the parish rectory, just ask for Terry.)
If any parishioners are interested in accompanying someone on this faith journey, give me a call too!

St. Mary Star of the Sea School is excited to announce the start of a fun‐filled class just for the younger set of students in our parish community. Children ages 18 months to 3 years are invited to attend our bi‐lingual Baby Stars classes held on Mondays from 9‐10 AM beginning September 16th.
Parents are asked to sit down on the carpet with their child, while participating in song, dance or other movement. For this reason, children and parents dress casually and comfortably to sit during circle time, wearing clothing that allows full movement and participation. We ask that each child wear long pants, to avoid knee scrapes.
There is absolutely no cost for this program. We ask only that you pre‐register for each week so we can anticipate the class size. Call 773.767.6160 to register for September 16th. Space is limited.
