Prayer Opportunities A life of prayer is an important part of the life of a Christian, and yet it is a part that we all struggle with from time to time. In an effort to help develop our prayer ministry, we have added the following prayer opportunities:

After Worship Prayer Time: There will be an opportunity for one-on-one prayer with PB or another prayer warrior at the conclusion of each worship experience.

If you feel moved to prayer, just come to the front of the sanctuary (left side) and someone will pray with you. Would you like to be one of the “prayer warriors”? Let Pastor Brian know so he can add you to the schedule!

Guided Stations of Prayer will be held on Thursday, September 9 at 6:30 PM. This is a gathering for prayer in the sanctuary during which participants will be invited to move throughout the room, pausing at different locations, to pray over a particular area of emphasis; such as: the nation; the church (global and local); the school; community; individuals we know; etc. Please join us!

Labyrinth: An ancient tradition in Christianity is the use of a labyrinth. Although it looks like a maze, it differs in purpose: a maze aims to get you lost, while a labyrinth aims to help you find yourself. A few years ago, a number of members of CUMC created a beautiful labyrinth

for the church to use, and we will be doing that on Thursday, September 9 at 6:30 PM.

New Worship Opportunities

Praise & Worship service: Beginning in September, we will have a Praise & Worship service on the third Sunday of the month at 6:30 PM. These services will be sing-alongs to some of the best and most popular contemporary Christian artists via videos and CD’s, prayer and Scripture readings, as well as occasionally celebrating communion.

Healing Service: Are you in need of healing in body, mind, soul, and/or spirit? It would be impossible to argue that we aren’t ALL in need of some form of healing, especially after the last year and half. In response to that, we will be having a Healing Service on the fifth Sunday of the month (October, for example) at 6:30 PM. These healing services will include many of the elements of a regular worship experience, as well as anointing and communion.

Pastor’s Column

Greetings, friends!

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it is said, “When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people.” The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:4-8; 11-13 NRSV; Italics added)

Did you know that as a United Methodist Church congregation we follow three calendars? The first is the Gregorian calendar that runs from January 1st through December 31st and tells us what day it is. The second is the Christian calendar which begins the first Sunday of Advent (last Sunday of November or first of December) and runs through Christ the King Sunday and reminds us of particular Christian holidays and celebrations. The third is what I would call the UM Ecclesiastical calendar and is best described as having three seasons: appointment season (springtime); move/transition season (late June to prepare for July1); and church conference season (fall), which is rapidly approaching.

If you’re not familiar with the UM system, you might ask, “Hey PB, what’s a church conference?” Well I’m glad you asked. Church conference is a special church-wide meeting that happens once a year to handle some very specific business: election of leadership for certain committees and teams to serve for the next year (or three, depending on the role); a person to serve as a Lay Member to the Annual Conference sessions; approval of pastors’ salaries; and occasional other pieces of business. Ours is scheduled for November 30th at 6:30 p.m. Anyone can attend and speak at a church conference, and all church members have the right to vote.

Why am I writing about this in the Pastor’s Pen, and what does the Scripture quoted above have to do with it? Well I’m glad you asked.

The author of Ephesians (possibly Paul) writes that we have all been given gifts by the Spirit, and although they differ in type they all have the same purpose, “to equip the saints for the work of ministry.” In other words, sisters and brothers, the spiritual gifts we have aren’t for us to keep for ourselves, but to use in ministry for “building up the body of Christ”… the church… the community of faith.

The Committee on Nominations will soon be meeting to work on filling roles of leadership at Christ UMC. After that takes place, you might be contacted be myself or someone else from the team and asked to consider joining the leadership team in a particular way. When you get that contact, please know that you weren’t selected because, “We need a warm body,” but because someone lifted your name up with great respect, you were prayed over, and the entire team discerned you were gifted for that role.

You might think you aren’t gifted, but you are. Not sure how? Not sure what to do with your gifts? We can help with that.

In September the York District’s Lay Ministries team will be offering two learning opportunities that you might want to consider. One is PLACE which helps you find your gifts and learn how to use them better. This opportunity is being led by Rev. Cathy Boileau, our District Superintendent. The other is GROW: Spiritual Transformational Leaders and will be led by me, right here on our campus. Information for these courses is available from the church office.

With that in mind, if you should be contacted, please prayerfully consider how you can put your gifts to work to “build up the body of Christ” in Waynesboro.

I praise my God for each of you in my prayers.

In Christian love, Pastor Brian

Teaching Moment: James the Brother of Jesus

The Pauline epistles and the later chapters of the Acts of the Apostles portray James as an important figure in the Christian community of Jerusalem. When Paul arrives in Jerusalem to deliver the money he raised for the faithful there, it is to James that he speaks. In Paul's account of his visit to Jerusalem in Galatians 1:18–19, he states that he stayed with Cephas (better known as Peter) and James, the brother of the Lord, was the only other apostle he met.

Paul describes James as being one of the persons to whom the risen Christ showed himself, and in Galatians 2:9, Paul mentions James with Cephas and John the Apostle as the three "pillars" of the Church.

Paul describes these Pillars as the ones who will minister to the "circumcised" (in general Jews and Jewish Proselytes) in Jerusalem, while Paul and his fellows will minister to the "uncircumcised" in general.

The brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, James met his death in 62 CE.

Men’s Bible Study—Fridays at 8:15 AM in the Parlor Living in this tumultuous world often robs us of the joys of life. The good news: It is possible to live confidently in such a time by practicing biblical principles based squarely on the truth of God’s Word. In Living With Confidence in a Chaotic World, Dr. David Jeremiah discusses ten principles to provide a personal guide to discovering and enjoying the confident life in the midst of chaos. Food and Friends: A Free Community Meal

We extend hospitality to all and to serve others during our Food & Friends. We invite the people of our neighborhood and those needing special support to come and have dinner with us. Our members cook and serve this meal. There is a short devotional time before the meal.

We are looking forward to the start-up of Food and Friends again on September 9th. We are still looking for some lead cooks, so if interested please sign your name under the date you may be interested in on the calendar hanging on the bulletin board by Suzannah's pantry. Reminder: Food and Friends runs from September to May. Please contact Sheryl Melville at 717-491-7183 if you can provide desserts for any of these dates. Although we feel it necessary to make some changes when serving meals to our community to keep everyone safe due to Covid-19, please understand; any church member who desires to mingle and sit with our community patrons should feel free to do so.

MISSIONS: OUR FAITH IN ACTION

“For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.” -----James 2:26----

SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR WAYNESBORO COMMUNITY and HUMAN SERVICES THANK YOU!! for your great response to the school supplies drive for Waynesboro Community and Human Services. We filled the box with approximately 28 bags of school supplies, in addition to $150 in cash. WCHS was most appreciative of your generosity!! There are many kids returning to school fully equipped thanks to you!!

TANSEN MISSION HOSPITAL, NEPAL Dierdre Zimmerman, one of our missionaries in Nepal, had made us aware of the desperate need for the provision of oxygen to COVID patients in Nepal. When we inquired as to how we could help, Dierdre explained that Patan Hospital (where she and Mark both work) has access to funds and resources and did not need financial assistance. However, she suggested that we might consider financial support for Tansen Mission Hospital, a smaller mission hospital under United Mission to Nepal, a UMC partner. Tansen Mission Hospital does not have access to the same resources that are available to Patan. A donation was sent through The Advance, Global Ministries, assuring that 100% of the money donated goes to the cause for which it was donated. Your support of Missions at CUMC makes such support of our neighbors possible. Thank you so much for putting your faith into action!

The 50th annual Waynesboro Area CROP Hunger Walk will be held on Sunday, October 10th, with registration beginning at 1:30 PM and the walk at 2 PM. This year the walk will again be held on the walking path along the Washington Township Boulevard and will feature a 2-mile and a 5-mile route. The Walk will begin and end at the soccer fields on the corner of Washington Township Blvd. and Country Club Road.

In order to encourage more participation in this vital ministry, a "friendly competition" was established among the area churches. A "traveling trophy" is awarded to the church that has the most walkers participate in the walk and one for the church that raises the most money for Church World Service. Last year, we (Christ UMC), for the second year in a row, won the trophy for the most money raised, raising $2,897, while Waynesboro Church of the Brethren won the award for the most walkers for the third year in a row with 25 walkers!

With this being Waynesboro's 50th consecutive Hunger Walk, the planning team is looking for a banner year to celebrate this accomplishment. Last year there were 66 walkers who collected $9,218 for Church World Service. Almost $10,000 collected with only 66 walkers!! Imagine how much more we could collect if we had 100 walkers! Out of the funds collected, 25% of goes to local ministries right here in Waynesboro. New Hope Shelter, The Lunch Place and Human Resources have been the recipients of these funds the past few years. In the last 50 years, a total of $327,593.59 has been raised in Waynesboro through our CROP Walk to help fight hunger and local agencies here in Waynesboro have received $81,898.40.

Christ United Methodist Church has already registered as a team for this year’s walk. A sign-up sheet with more information will be posted in Frank Hall in September. Registration can also happen on-line by going to crophungerwalk.org. Just follow the instructions to join the CUMC team.

From its inception in 1969, Church World Service sponsored CROP Hunger Walks have grown to include walkers of all ages, faiths and backgrounds in more than 1,000 communities throughout the U.S. This year marks the 52nd year CROP Hunger Walks have brought the interfaith community together across the country to raise funds to end hunger around the world.

Participation impacts people in more than 35 countries. In many developing countries, people can walk up to 6 miles a day to get food and water. CROP Hunger Walk is an opportunity to walk and be in solidarity, bringing awareness to these issues and raising the funds for permanent change.

Pastoral Visits

PB wants to come to visit with you, but he understands that you might not be comfortable with having a visit, so he has created a sheet with various times when he would be available to visit if you would like him to do so. The sheet covers the next couple of weeks and will be updated as time goes by. Just fill in an open spot with your name and phone number and he will add it to his calendar … (or call/text/email PB).

Think Green Christ Church has recycling programs to help the environment. We want and need your help. Don’t throw those old batteries, cell phones, ink cartridges, pull-tabs, or metal items in the trash. Bring them to the church so they can be kept out of landfills and recycled.

• Aluminum Cans Pull-Tabs: A pull-tabs recycle tub is in the narthex to Frank Hall next to all the other recycle tubs. When we collect enough tabs, George Finney will make them to the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey.

• Batteries: A battery recycle tub is by the narthex to Frank Hall – household batteries of all kinds – even hearing aid batteries can be deposited there. They will then be taken for recycling.

• Empty Ink-jet Cartridges: Most inkjet cartridges can be recycled. Please place the your empty cartridges (in its original box or in a plastic bag to keep it safe from spills and damages) in the jar in the Frank Hall.

• Metal Recycling: We can recycle anything made of metal or with metal in it - any appliance large or small, anything run electrically or with batteries. *Please note: We do NOT take TV’s, computer monitors, tires, propane tanks, and stuffed or wood furniture - please do NOT drop them off (we can NOT recycle them.)

For more info about our Recycle Disciples, please contact Bill Short or Bob Small

Updates (April 2010 - August 15, 2021) Total Pounds of Metal Recycled: 1,379,667 Current Balance in Recycling Fund: $ 29,558.83 Total Amount Earned from Recycling: $ 144,930.79

Recycle Disciples: Help is needed!! Proceeds from recycling have funded the retaining wall built off Second Street; replacement of carpet in Frank and Wolff Halls; and refurbishment of the steps, railing and landing at the Second Street entrance, and resurfacing of the parking lot.

Our Recycle Disciples have spent hours tearing appliances apart and stripping wire so that they can redeem every piece to its fullest value. They need help to pick up and tear apart items for recycling.

For this ministry to continue, we need help!

We need someone to lead and coordinate this ministry. If you can help one day a week, one day a month or just occasionally, or for more information, please contact Bill Short or Bob Small.

Susannah’s Pantry: Well Stocked! People come to CUMC seeking immediate food help. We do not want to turn anyone away and we especially want to meet them as Christ’s hands extended. Our pantry is still OPEN – we are bagging groceries and handing them out to community members that come to the church. This is a faith-ministry ... as we give the food away to needy families, we trust God to supply yet more! You can help by donating food. We are still only handing out specific items since we are bagging items and handing them out at the door. We are currently handing out (non-perishable, simple food items): spaghetti sauce, spaghetti noodles, mac-n-cheese, peanut butter, jelly, ham/chicken, tuna, beef stew or similar, chicken noodle soup, corn, green beans, fruit, side dish (noodles), crackers, granola bars (or similar), cereal.

We could use canned ham, chicken, tuna, corn, green beans, jelly, and spaghetti sauce. We are well supplied on other items— thanks to your generous donations.

Currently (Usually) Open: Monday – Thursday from 10 AM – 3:30 PM and Friday from 10 AM – 2:00 PM.

Altar Guild Sept. Judy Smith

2021 Altar Flowers Chart is posted on the bulletin board in the Second

Street entrance to Frank Hall. Sponsoring the altar flowers is a beautiful way to give thanks to God for someone in your life, past or present. We will acknowledge these honorariums and remembrances in the Sunday bulletin. If you would like to present flowers in honor of or in memory of a loved one, please check the chart to see what dates are available, then write your information on the chart. You order the flowers from the florist of your choice.

New to sponsoring flowers at CUMC: Beside the chart, there is a yellow “How to” guide sheet for sponsoring flowers to help you with the process.

From the Church Office

Hospitalized? Hospitals do not notify churches when their members are admitted. If you or a loved one is hospitalized, please contact the church office. The same is true for nursing homes, rehab, etc. The best way we learn of your health issues is when you tell us. Thank you and please pass the word.

Church Leaders: Please make sure that all meetings and events are on the master church calendar (hanging in the Church Office’s Work Room — outer office with the copier.)

The deadline for articles to be placed in the September issue of

The Messenger is Monday, Sept. 20th.

Please email your articles, information and calendar dates to the Church Office([email protected] - Subject: Newsletter) by the 20th. (Information received after deadline may not be included in the newsletter) (Newsletter should be posted/emailed/mailed around Thursday, September 23rd.) Thank you!

Changes: Have you moved? Changed phone numbers? Heading south for the season? Please let the church office know of any changes so that we can update our database.

Worship Assistants: Are you interested in serving as a worship assistant? There are currently five different

areas in which that can take place: worship leader; acolyte; usher; greeter; or member of the video team.

Worship Leaders serve as liturgists, reading Scripture, and leading portions of the liturgy. For more information talk to PB or sign-up on the sheet in the work office.

Acolytes serve to make sure the candles are lit at the beginning of worship, and extinguished at the end. Although this has traditionally been done by youth, there is really no age limit. Please contact PB.

Ushers serve to help folks find seats, and make sure they have items that might be needed for that day's worship experience. When communion takes place, they often help direct the flow, or distribute the elements. If you would like to serve in this capacity, please contact Bill Hovis.

The responsibility of the greeters is simply that: to greet congregants and guests as they enter and leave, to make sure they feel welcomed. We are currently in need of a coordinator for the greeters. Please contact PB.

Our Video Ministry team can use some servants to operate cameras and computers, and to assist with Livestreaming. For more details on this ministry, contact Carl Henry.

Noah’s Ark held its’ annual End of Summer / Back to School celebration on Friday, August 20th from 5 to 7 PM. This event was held right here at the Ark with families filling the front plays yards and enjoying the opportunity to have some fun and fellowship with the teachers and other families. Two large bouncy houses brought lots of giggles and smiles. Benjamin made sure to tell me, “It was the best time ever!”

Christ UMC sponsored a number of child friendly activities and crafts for the children to participate in and take home some Christian inspired items for their enjoyment.

The cook out included burgers, hotdogs, shared side dishes from the families, Kona Ice and music for all.

The children had the opportunity to use the bouncy houses throughout the day as well as the evening of the event. Earlier in the day, the School Age children prepared and led carnival games for the younger children.

We were blessed with clear skis following some high temperatures and downpours shortly before 5 pm.

I want to send a special thank you to those church members that graciously helped support the evening’s events and used the opportunity to connect with the children and parents of Noah’s Ark. The appreciation was also expressed from a large number of the Noah’s Ark families, children and adults that truly appreciated the family event, CUMC’s Christian inspired activities, and the ministry of Noah’s Ark.

“Thank you“ Beverly Robinson, Carl Henry, Pastor Dave & his grandson Collin, Kay Donnelly, and (my mother) Barb Varner …. and my apologies for anyone

that was forgotten! You are all very much appreciated!
