The model of fraternal correction described by Jesus and enacted in the early church is often paralleled today in the ways that family members and friends respond to loved ones who abuse drugs.

First, there is a private encounter in which a family member or friend implores the abuser to recognize the destructive behavior and take the first steps toward seek-ing a new way. Should this step fail, an “intervention” takes place. More friends and acquaintances intervene and compel the abuser to seek professional treatment. Unfortunately, this step, too, sometimes fails. It is only then, when “tough love” takes over, that the abuser is left to hit bottom, in the hope that he or she can begin the climb to recovery.

A COMMUNITY THAT CARESToday’s Gospel gives Jesus’ directions for correcting a

member of the community who has sinned. Its three-stage

process was likely practiced in the early church. The first step is private correction, to tell the person his or her fault so there is no chance for public humiliation. If this fails, the matter is to be brought before the assembled church. In the third step of this process, when the person does not listen to even the church acting in Jesus’ name, then the sinner is to be dismissed from the community.

Even this dismissal is a qualified one. Jesus ministered to the most despised of society. And the church continues to offer pastoral care to all in need. More telling is Jesus’ invitation to pray, that “if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father” (Matthew 18:19). Through prayer, we can be assured that even those whom we expel in the name of “tough love” will be treated merci-fully and compassionately by our loving God.

PREP Registration Registration is currently being held for PREP which will begin on Thursday September 11th. PREP is a year long program which provides religious education to our parish children who attend non-Catholic schools. Classes will be held on Thursdays from 6:00PM to 7:30PM in the school building. Registration forms are available at the rectory. Registration fees are: $70.00 for one (1) child; $120.00 for two (2) children; and $30.00 for each child after. The fee must be paid at the time of registration. A copy of the baptismal certificate is required for first time registrants if the child was not baptized at St. John Cantius or All Saints Church. Please remember that before a child receives the sacraments (First Penance, First Communion or Confirmation) the child must receive two (2) years of religious instruction. If there are any questions, please call, Mrs. Dombkoski, Parish Services Director at the rectory 215-535-6667.

NEIGHBORLY LOVE We can never love our neighbor too much. —St. Francis de Sales

PRESENCE Wherever you see another, there I am. Rabbinical saying

DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CATHOLIC FAITH? Saint John Cantius Parish offers year round opportunities for people seeking more information about the Catholic Faith, the Sacraments and living the Christian Life. These opportunities are for adults who would like to inquire about following Jesus and becoming a member of the Catholic Church, or, if you are already a baptized Christian, would like to become Catholic, or, if you are already a baptized Catholic, would like to receive Confirmation and Holy Communion. There are many people like yourself inquiring and we are ready to answer your questions. Please contact the rectory office for more information. ********************************************** SPEAKING OUT IN LOVE In the final verses of today’s Gospel reading Jesus says that when two or three are gathered in his name, “there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). So we understand that fraternal correction is always undertaken in the presence of Jesus Christ. Likewise, encouraging the good in others is not only the right thing for us to do, it is a necessity. The LORD tells the prophet Ezekiel that if he does not speak out to dissuade a person from evil, then he too will be held responsible. We live in a “do your own thing” age where moral objectivity is often ignored. Clearly when the message we share with others is rooted in love, our motives cannot ever be misinterpreted. As Saint Paul writes, “Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10). ******************************************

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We know for certain that the sacrament of penance was a fairly rare event in the life of a Christian in the early centuries, but that everyone had a duty to admit their sins and ask forgiveness before giving thanks in the Sunday Eucharist and receiving Christ’s Body and Blood at the table. Everyone today is familiar with this same ancient pattern. We also know about Lent and its journey of renewal, and even those who are returning from summer vacations may speak of a fresh perspective on life and a resolve to do better. Saint Augustine spoke of a third kind of penance, beyond the turning of the catechumens to a different life, beyond the normal everyday fresh starts, to a form that is severe and serious. Certain sins broke faith with the community: the sinners were obliged to give their names to the bishop and were barred from participation in the Eucharist. Augustine mentioned sacrilege, adultery, and murder as the culprits, great wounds for the perpetrator, wounds that were serious, deadly, mortal. Penance was such a frightening prospect that many people delayed their baptism for fear that they would sin, a practice with which Augustine was well acquainted. Pastoral need would eventually call the church to reconsider its practice. ****************************************** READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Mi 5:1-4a or Rom 8:28-30; Ps 13:6; Mt 1:1-16, 18-23 [18-23] Tuesday: 1 Cor 6:1-11; Ps 149:1b-6a, 9b; Lk 6:12- 19 Wednesday: 1 Cor 7:25-31; Ps 45:11-12, 14-17; Lk 6:20-26 Thursday: 1 Cor 8:1b-7, 11-13; Ps 139:1b-3, 13- 14ab, 23-24; Lk 6:27-38 Friday: 1 Cor 9:16-19, 22b-27; Ps 84:3-6, 12; Lk 6:39-42 Saturday: 1 Cor 10:14-22; Ps 116:12-13, 17-18; Lk 6:43-49 Sunday: Nm 21:4b-9; Ps 78:1-2, 34-38; Phil 2:6- 11; Jn 3:13-17

We received notice that Bishop Robert Maginnis will be here in April, to give the Sacrament of Con-firmation. If you have not received this sacrament and would like to do so, you must attend instruc-tions. Please call Terry Dombkoski at the Rectory during office hours to make arrangements. Next Sunday we will celebrate Catechetical Sunday at the 10:00 Mass. We are asking for all the chil-dren – along with their parents – to attend this Mass. This invitation is to all the children who at-tend our PREP Program and those who attend Blessed Trinity. The children will receive a special blessing as well as a gift as they begin their new school year. Our Carnival will begin on Thursday, September 25th, and continue to Sunday afternoon, September 28th. All proceeds will be for the parish. This is a great event not only for the parish but for the en-tire Bridesburg community. On Sunday, October 5th, at the 10:00 Mass, we will bless all the babies and those children who are be-tween the ages of 1 to 5 to celebrate their lives as we begin Respect Life Month. We invite all parents to bring their children to this Mass and make a “joyful noise” to the Lord. The children will be pre-sented with a small gift and memento of the occa-sion. I remind you that we are selling Lottery Tickets in the back of Chapel after every Mass on Sundays to help raise funds for the parish. This $5.00 ticket is good for an entire month and your support helps us to maintain the parish. I hope you all have a good week!
