Wow, what a summer we have had! The Loft hashad great turnouts on Tuesday nights with ourBattlefield Boogie Club growing every week. Wehave to be proud of our First Annual Cannon BallBlast Party on August 13. Big thanks to BrennarGoree, USA 2005 Grand Natinal Junior II Shag Cham-pion and Cindy Goree for a super workshop anddemo. They made our party rock and inspired usall! They also JOINED our club!

YES, our party was not only well attended byother shag clubs, Northern Virginia, Richmond,Lynchburg, Colonial Beach Shag , but together withour own BBC members, the party was high spir-ited, and lots of fun! Thanks to Roger Buornat forsponsoring us at the FOP Club and for continuedhelp throughout the day. We received manycongrats from folks that attended. We could nothave done it without the zestful work of our mem-bers. Thank you to Betty Russell, Shirley Kirchner,Chuck Russell, Wes Kirchner, Brenda Bishop andRon Bishop, who were on site ALL day to get ev-erything just right for our party. Many thanks toBetty and Shirley for the food committee – a su-perb job! Ditto thanks to Brenda Atkins and BrendaBishop for the decorating committee. They werevery creative and even more creative in placing ev-erything in the dance area. Both committees workedfor hours on their own time to make our party asuccess! Thanks to the others; Don Borja, ThornyChilton, Ann Martin, Peggy and Marion Dongieux,Ann Thompson, Pamela Sielicki, Tim and Eve Fish.My apologies if I have not named someone becausewe had quite a crew that helped. Our own DJ,

Jim Rose, played the best beachmusic that we could ever ask for! Thanks Jim! What a great bunch offolks we have in our club. We had agreat party and we can all feelpleased with the welcoming and funimage that we provided. Next year, our party will be one NOT to miss!

So, as we finish up our summerand everyone comes back from theirvacations including SOS in Myrtle Beach (look forHeather Jennings’article on this), we still have a lot tolook forward to with our Tuesday nights, and our dancecruise that is still in the works. We hope to have it be-fore it gets too chilly. Don’t forget there are many sidetrips that our members take that you can jump in on…..concerts, dances, wine tastings….to name a few. Watchthe table on Tuesday nights for dances–they are heldalmost every weekend up and down the east coast. Weare looking for places to dance on Friday nights in ourgeneral area too, so if you hear of a place, let us know! There are many opportunities to get together with ourdancing friends!

We are very excited about our 50/50’s each Tues-day night! We have lots of happy winners! Finally, weare proud to display our new Battlefield Boogie Bannerand wherever a bunch of our members go. We havealmost 80 members in our club now, and want to stayin close touch with each of you. If you know of anyonein our club that is sick or need some sunshine, pleaselet us know. We look forward to seeing you on Tues-day nights at The Loft and within a few weeks at theRappahannock Cruise. Watch your e-mails for updates!

Keep dancing, your spirits high, and let the goodtimes continue to roll!

Spinnin’ Round…News from the DJ Booth

STEP Buy the Beach Music Anthology Box Set.Just get the first box; six CD’s should beenough for any function.

STEP Buy a big Boom Box with speakers that canbe moved 2-3 feet away from the box. Thismakes your setup look bigger. Don’t botherbuying a back up, they never go down.

STEP Buy a really cheap pair of headphones. Bro-ken ones that someone is throwing awaywill work since you never have to use them. You do need to put them on occasionally tomake people think you’re really doingsomething.

STEP Buy a cheap microphone. Sometimes youhave to make an announcement, althoughnobody listens anyway.

STEP Don’t be concerned about which songs youplay and in what order. Hey, it’s just BeachMusic. Let the crowd sort out what songsthey want to dance to.

STEP If someone complains that the song is toofast or too slow, just say that someone elserequested it to be played at that speed. Re-member, that boom box doesn’t have a pitchcontrol…whatever that is!

STEP When someone requests asong you don’t have, don’tworry. Just say, “Oh, Ididn’t bring that song to-night. I’ll be sure to have itnext time.

STEP If you get bored while play-ing; bring a book or maga-zine to read. No need towatch the crowd and how they react to a song.Remember, it’s just Beach Music.

STEP Don’t bother keeping up with what’s beingplayed elsewhere or by other DJ’s. Just keep onplaying the same old songs. You know howshaggers hate change.

STEP Go ask all the people you know and any DJ youmeet to make you some copies of the BeachMusic they have. Pleading “poor-mouth”always helps and may get you a song or two tosurprise the crowd with.

OK, that’s it! You are now ready to go out into theBeach & Shag world and play yer butt off! Good luck!

Until next time… See ya on the dance floor!

manned by two people at all times for 45 minute in-crements. The food being brought by members wasdiscussed to be sure there was enough variety. It wasagreed that all members involved in set-up, decora-tions, and food would arrive at the lodge between 2:00and 3:00 P.M. Meeting adjourned: 8:00 P.M.

Treasurer’s Report: $662.02Total cost of first party was $943.46 but we took in

enough ticket sales and 50/50 raffle to offset allbut around $125.00. Lots of our cost was in decora-tions but they can be used again. Cost also includesnew banner.

So, what is the Society of Stranders?" Founded in 1980,the Society of Stranders (SOS) is an organization thatenjoys, upholds, and perpetuates the traditions of beachand shag music, and shag dancing.

ANNUAL PARTIES!!!SOS is widely recognized for its two yearly adult

parties (the Spring Safari and the Fall Migration) heldin North Myrtle Beach, SC. People go to these eventsto have fun, enjoy the beach, see old friends, and tomake new ones. Started as a small reunion of friends, they are now attended by 12,000+ members!

Both yearly SOS events are ten days in length, andencompass the majority of the local lounges in theOcean Drive area of North Myrtle Beach, SC. Insidethese participating lounges, the best shag DJ’s from allover the East coast play the hottest new and old beachand shag tunes. It is non-stop fun from early in the dayuntil the wee hours of the morning.

Each SOS event includes special activities like danceworkshops, exhibitions, contests, live entertainment,

SOS stands for the “Society of Stranders.”and a parade (in the Spring) and “Fun Monday”(in the Fall). SOS even gives you free food in par-ticipating lounges at various times during the week.Trams provided by SOS run up and down the beachduring peak hours offering free rides to and fromthe lounges.

Of course, there is so much more at the “biggestand best of all adult beach parties.” But, you needto experience it to understand!!!!! Go once, and youwill find that yearly return trips become a time-hon-ored tradition!!!!!!!!!!!! (Note: The next SOS is FallMigration scheduled for Sept. 16-25, 2005.)
