GENERAL MANAGER UPDATE | by David Cull

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your support in celebrating our 25th anniversary at the Silver Jubilee! The event was a huge success with both Club Members and HOA Community Members in attendance. The evening included everything from the hilarious photo booth, a spectacular 25 year anniversary ice carving, delicious food and complimentary champagne, dancing to the sounds of Whitney Walters Band, along with a continuous slide show packed with 25 years of Cullasaja history. There was something that appealed to everyone in attendance, especially the 25 commemorative sky lanterns that made this celebration extra special! Kudos to our entire Cullasaja Team for going that extra mile to make this event one to remember!

2012 ANNUAL MEETING - Be sure to mark your calendars for the Cullasaja Club Annual Membership Meeting to be held on Sunday, September 23rd at 3:00 pm in the lower level of the Activity Center. Immediately following the Annual Meeting, we will be hosting a complimentary Appreciation Reception in the Clubhouse. During this time, there will be a short presentation where we will be recognizing all of our gracious volunteers, introducing the new incoming Club and HOA Board Members as well as giving special recognition to those who have completed their service as Members to each of the respective Boards. Following the reception, our culinary team will be providing a special “Sunday Supper Service” beginning at 6:00 pm. The dress code will be ‘Country Club Casual’. So that we can plan accordingly, reservations are requested. Call the Clubhouse at 526-3531 and make your plans to join us.

2012 MEMBERSHIP SATISFACTION SURVEY – We are currently in the process of putting the final touches on our annual Membership Satisfaction Survey. You can expect to receive it prior to end of the season for completion. This survey is a very effective tool for rating our performance and implementing your feedback for the 2013 season. We thank you in advance for taking the time and effort to complete this very important survey.

UPCOMING RENOVATIONS FOR 2012-2013 OFF SEASON Both the Greens Committee and the Facilities and Properties Committee have been busy this summer working with architects and consultants on continued renovations of the golf course and clubhouse. For the golf course, plans are to continue installing the new irrigation system, which began last winter. Additionally, minor improvements will be implemented to make the course more player friendly.

We are working with the Clubhouse Architect to finalize the design of the new casual dining area, restrooms and locker rooms and pro shop. Over the next couple of months, the BOG will be finalizing the scope of the construction projects to be completed over the winter months.

Further updates will be discussed with the Members at the Annual Meeting in September.

CROQUET INITIATIVE – Our Croquet Committee along with Ken Wheeler and Terry Fugate, have been working diligently with the United States Croquet Association based in West Palm Beach, FL to identify some possible dates in our efforts to hold a Cullasaja Club group training session at their facility in Florida this coming winter. We will communicate all of the details for this exciting event by mid October.

SIMPLY THE PERFECT LIFE

The September issue of Laurel magazine will feature not only the story of Cullasaja Club’s 25th Anniversary Silver Jubilee, complete with a photo of the time capsule, but also the first of our Club branding ads, as seen in the accompanying photo.

The fall season brings leaf-lookers to our mountains who might also be potential real estate buyers and club members. So the Marketing Committee and our consultants chose the Laurel magazine to begin a three-month ad campaign that will help to identify Cullasaja as “Simply the Perfect Life” for those interested in more than an occasional weekend visit to our beloved Highlands plateau. During the season the Laurel has a circulation of over 10,000 copies and is distributed free to area shops, hotels, restaurants and businesses for pick-up by their customers.

We thank Harriet and Clarence Bauknight for permission to show the photo that was taken from their beautiful deck looking back toward the city of Highlands. The ad copy identifies Cullasaja as exemplifying “the simple pleasures of mountain life with a vibrant lifestyle to share with family and friends, and the time to live the lifestyle you deserve.”

In addition to the new logo this season, the new design and layout of our internal and external c o m m u n i c a t i o n s m a t e r i a l s , (letterheads, HOA

and Club newsletters, and proposed signage throughout the Club), the Marketing Committee is busy building a photo library of the lifestyle and many activities of Cullasaja. It will include golf, tennis, swimming, fitness, lake activities, dining and croquet. With the help of committee members, Cullasaja staff and members, professional photographers and models, and our consultants, we are compiling a visual impression of who we are and

the way we

live here at Cullasaja. We’ll use the library to create a captivating picture of our community for display on our website, in our marketing brochure and in ads placed across the south and southeast…our primary geographic target markets. Ultimately we hope that the public relations and advertising campaign will spread the word for potential homeowners and club members for Cullasaja.

So, look for us in the September, October and November Laurel!

FROM THE GREEN | by Tom Nelson

POA ANNUA, FRIEND OR FOE

This is one of the oldest most discussed topics on any cool season golf course. For as long as golf courses have been in existence there has been talk on how to either get rid of or manage POA Annua. Nearly all cool season golf courses begin with bentgrass greens. Before the course even opens the doors, the fight with POA begins. POA can take hold in the smallest bare spot or thin area in just a few weeks, if left unchecked it can and will take over. When bentgrass greens are located in an area with hot dry summers, POA is considered a vile weed that must be kept out, however, if the local environment is conducive for POA, can be managed to provide superior greens surface.

Typically for POA to evolve into a great surface it takes years of close mowing and other management techniques to allow it to flourish. Many of the great old golf courses in the country have all POA greens that are regarded as some of the best in the world. For many years researchers have tried to propagate these strains of POA with limited success. For reasons unknown, when seed is harvested from the majority of these great POA greens, the new plants do not come back with the same characteristics.

Included in our long range plan of golf course is a greens re-surfacing project. This would include removing the existing turf, adding 2” of greens-mix, restoring the existing contours and re-planting with bentgrass seed. As of now this project is scheduled to take place over the winter of 2014-15. The Green Committee has agreed to take the next few seasons and do everything we can to encourage our

POA Annua to become the dominate species of turf on the putting surfaces. We are planning to use two different commercially available POA seed varieties, harvest POA seed from #10 green, slightly alter our core aerification and fertility practices to shift the advantage to POA. Many of our greens are already 50% or more POA. While I do not anticipate a dramatic change in one season, time will tell how successful we are with this program. If the program is successful, we could forgo the re-surfacing project.

Every scenario has its pros and cons. If we elect to re-surface the course would need to be closed for a period of time during the season for construction and grow-in. Heavy aerification practices going forward would need to be done during the height of the growing season. Significant chemical and labor inputs would need to be directed to maintaining a pure stand in the greens. The benefits would be a more uniform putting surface and no seed-head issues in the spring. Maintaining our current greens we can expect slightly lower quality putting surfaces in April and early May, and a more mottled appearance throughout the seasons until the POA completely takes over.

At this point we have nothing to lose and everything to gain by trying to encourage the POA on our greens. To quantify the results we plan to assess select areas on the greens to measure progress in the next few seasons. Pay close attention over the next few seasons and let us know what you think. As of now #10 has the highest POA populations and is the most uniform green on the course.

CROQUET AT CULLASAJA | by Terry Fugate

Fall will soon be approaching here in the mountains. In preparation for its arrival, there are several Croquet events planned for the season. Not yet familiar with croquet? No worries, Ken and Terry are still offering Free Tuesday Clinics on an ongoing basis. For those who consider themselves proficient as well as those just learning, there will continue to be an opportunity to participate in some friendly competition at our twice a month, Friday Night Whites. In order to finish the season with a bang, both Ken and Terry would love to see everyone partake of the free Tuesday clinics. This falls in conjunction with the plans to bring Croquet to the next level at Cullasaja by forming a Croquet Committee. Keep in mind, the putting green is almost always set up and the mallets and balls are always available for you at any time.

If you have an interest in serving as a Croquet Committee Member, please contact Charles Harrison at 404-307-3753 or [email protected].

Bocce is based on one of the oldest diversions known to mankind; that is throwing something at a target. It is similar to Italian lawn bowling. It is an easy sport to play, but can continue to challenge the average player, as their skill progresses. Although several Members currently play Bocce, bring a friend and visit Ken or Terry to utilize the new equipment while they set up an area for play.

Moving forward, the putting green located beside the main clubhouse will be set up for Bocce Ball every Wednesday afternoon and evening. This will not be a staffed event. Instructions for play will be at the bar for your reference. To begin, there will be a white string marking the boundary lines instead of a board or concrete curb. We look forward to seeing the levels of interest surrounding Bocce.

BOCCE BALL COMING SOON:

FITNESS FEATURES | by Ken Wheeler

HIKING AS THE WEATHER COOLSTake a moment to look over the hiking schedule for some really fantastic excursions leading into the fall season. There will still be some great opportunities to participate in some “In-and-out” hikes.

The first hike planned in September is the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, September 1st. Since many Members may have extended family visiting, this hike will be local and in a convenient location that many are familiar with: Devil’s Courthouse. This is a three mile hike round trip. The route will start by hiking up Whiteside on the Old Toll Road then stopping at the corner and descending to the Courthouse. It will return to the parking area via the lower trail that comes out below the parking lot. If hard core hikers want to start at the 13th T box, an early start can be arranged so that both groups can meet at the parking area and complete the remainder of the hike together. Please let Ken know if you are interested in this option.

Then on Saturday, September 15th Ken will lead a hike to Horse Cove, which he first encountered last fall. This takes a very old road last used by Moonshiners to transport their booze to Walhalla, SC. It navigates along some interesting rock formations called “The Caves”. The caves will be the turn around point so there will probably be some addition time spent exploring them. Hopefully the moonshiners will have vacated by then. This hike is 4 miles round trip and fairly easy grades.

Saturday, September 9th there will be a hike from the Walhalla Fish Hatchery to Ellicott’s Rock on the Chattooga River trail. This is a 7 mile hike that leads to the rock that Andrew Ellicott found in 1811 that designated the boundary between Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. It too has great views along the Chattooga River. Please note that it is rated strenuous due to its length.

Finally, THERE IS A CHANGE IN THE LAST HIKE of the season. It was originally listed as Scaley Mountain but has been changed to the Horsepasture River Hike. This is particularly spectacular in the fall with the waterfalls nestled along the fall foliage. It is longer in length and can be a bit strenuous as the final two miles are uphill. However, the natural landscape of both the river and falls with the autumn colors are well worth attending.

An update with regards to transportation: If you plan on attending any of the remaining hikes, please consider whether you or not you can assist in transporting additional Members. In the upcoming “Week At A Glance” reminders, Ken Wheeler will provide additional information on what type of roads will be traveled to access the hikes, so that you can be best prepared.

All hikes leave the Activity Center at 9:00 am on Saturday mornings of that scheduled week. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming excursions!

News | WGA

June, July, and August have been busy months for the W.G.A. members. Not only have we had golf events, but the W.G.A. also sponsored the Cullasaja Cancer Challenge. Most of the lady golfers were involved as volunteers in at least one part of the various week-long events. These events raised money for the hospital to help those local residents who can’t afford early diagnosis screening tests or treatment procedures.

The Laurel Cup, a 2-day ringer tournament, was held on June 12th and 13th. Winners were Diane Warren in the 18-hole division and Tracy Shawhan in the 9-hole division.

The President’s Cup tournament was held on July 10th and 11th, a 2-day event using Stableford scoring (accumulating points for net bogey, par, birdie, eagle, etc.) Winners in the 18-hole division were Annette Lovell with Susan Miller in 2nd place and Marilyn Smith in 3rd place.
