When Mike Richards found out that his wife, Linda, was having twins, he figured it was time to buy some life insurance. He wanted to ensure his family’s financial security and know that his mortgage and kids’ college tuition would be covered if something were to happen to him. And he understood that he had to jump on it. “I knew the longer I waited, the more expensive it would be,” he says.

But his policy cost less than he expected. “I was really surprised it wasn’t higher,” he says.

His experience is common. Yet many people don’t purchase life insurance because they worry about the cost. Worldwide research and consulting company LIMRA recently found that 85 percent of people who didn’t have life insurance chose not to buy it because they thought it’d be too expensive. Seventy-eight percent of those who already had some life insurance didn’t buy more for the same reason.

But LIMRA also found that the average cost of a 20-year $250,000 term life insurance policy for a healthy 30-year-old was $400 per year. That’s about $33 per month, less than most 30-year-olds spend on one dinner out with friends.

Here are a few ways to make life insurance even more affordable. Buy early — Age is probably the most important factor in determining cost. Youth is generally an advantage. For example, the policy that costs a healthy 30-year-old $400 a year could cost a healthy 50-year-old closer to $1,500. So it’s best to buy coverage as

soon as someone depends on your income, whether that’s a spouse or a child.

If you purchase your policy when you’re young and healthy, consider locking in your low rate for as long as possible. The right term life policy might let you keep your premium low for up to 30 years. A permanent policy like whole life or universal life might go longer. Stay healthy — Health is generally the second most important thing insurers consider when they set premiums. Most companies will charge smokers and the obese more. Rates also increase for those with other health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes.

However, if you can show that you take care of yourself—by maintaining a healthy diet or exercise routine—most insurers will keep your premium low.

If you’re healthy, think about individual term insurance — A group policy through your workplace will usually cost more because it has to cover the unhealthy people in the group. Don’t overbuy — Purchasing too little life insurance risks leaving your family in a position where they can’t pay the bills. But premiums rise as coverage increases, which is why it’s important to meet with an experienced life insurance agent who can help you decide how much life insurance is right and explain the various life insurance products that may be available to you. Consider a convertible term policy — Term life insurance, which covers you for a limited amount of time (a term), is usually less expensive than whole life or universal life. Those plans are referred to as permanent, because they can cover you for your entire life. Many people opt for term insurance because it’s more affordable.

If you do decide to purchase term life insurance, make sure it’s a convertible policy: one that starts off as term insurance but can be converted to permanent insurance without having to re-qualify for the policy when you’re ready for a permanent policy.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 20154

Ever since there have been cars, there has been car trouble — flat tires, dead batteries, blown radiator hoses and more. The earliest cars were notoriously unreliable, and drivers often found themselves stranded. AAA came to the rescue when it introduced Roadside Assistance — 100 years ago this year.

In 1915, the Automobile Club of St. Louis — now AAA Missouri — launched its “First Aid Corps.” The club deployed mechanics on motorcycles to assist stranded drivers. AAA clubs across the country quickly recognized the value and AAA’s trusted emergency road service network was born.

Today, AAA responds to more than 30 million calls for help each year, with AAA East Central handling more than 1.25 million of those throughout its five-state region.

Early calls were recorded on paper and placed on a conveyor belt to a dispatcher. Later, AAA pioneered the use of radio dispatching right after World War II. Today, AAA uses the latest technology to make the roadside experience completely seamless. Advanced AAA call centers use computer-based systems to track and monitor calls

and to dispatch and communicate with service providers.

Members can now receive calls or texts to keep them updated on the location of the driver. Or they can use the AAA Mobile app’s Truck Tracker feature on their mobile device to ease roadside anxiety.

“AAA understands the role that technology plays in our daily lives,” notes Jim Lehman, president AAA East Central. “Members feel vulnerable when they experience a breakdown, and the Truck Tracker function on the AAA Mobile app offers the added benefit of knowing exactly when help will arrive.”

Should you lock your keys in your car, experience a flat, need a jumpstart, or a tow call 1-800-AAA-HELP, or request Roadside Assistance online. Your membership covers you, not your vehicle, so you can call whether you’re in your own car, a friend’s, or a rental, and whether you’re the driver or a passenger.

If your vehicle won’t start, AAA’s Mobile Battery Service provides convenient mobile battery testing on the roadside, using state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. Should the battery need to be replaced, you’ll have the option of having a AAA battery

installed on the spot at a specially discounted member price. Last year, AAA East Central installed over 45,000 batteries.

AAA’s specialized training ensures every service provider can safely tow and unlock your unique vehicle. Our proced-ures have become the industry standard for towing and unlocking vehicles.

Today’s Roadside Assistance has evolved into a state-of-the art experience that combines know-how and con-venience, with safety and security at the roadside. Whether it’s changing a tire, replacing a battery, opening a locked vehicle, or towing it to a repair shop, AAA will be there whenever a member needs help.

Celebrating a Century of AAA Roadside AssistanceAAA has been helping stranded motorists for 100 years

A CENTURY OF PROGRESS — Times have changed but Roadside Assistance remains AAA’s signature service.

FOR MORE INFORMATIONFor Roadside Assistance throughout the US call 1-800-222-4357, request it online on AAA.com, or use the AAA Mobile app for Android and Apple devices to request it using your GPS location.

Parents play a crucial role in getting their teens safely on the road. Supervised driving practice builds confidence and experience during the all-important learning-to-drive process.

Teens who participate in a quality driver education program have the benefit of being exposed to a broad variety of difficult driving conditions, experts say, but parental guidance remains essential long after a teen obtains their license.

Before your teen hits the road solo, parents should make a point to practice these five overlooked driving scenarios:

• Driving with other modes of transportation — Bicycles, trucks and motorcycles all present different challenges. Practice driving around each of these modes to help your teen understand the limitations of each and how to safely share the road.

• Driving in inclement weather — Rain, ice and snow can make for dangerous driving conditions for even the most experienced

Prepare Your Teen For All Driving ChallengesPractice these five overlooked driving scenarios

driver. Knowing how to handle poor traction and reduced visibility reduces the potential for hydroplaning, skidding or sliding off the road. Parents may be hesitant about their teen driving in these conditions, but it’s critical for them to practice in less-than-ideal conditions while you’re there to coach them.

• Driving at night — Driving at night is one of the two biggest risk factors for teens — which is why graduated driver licensing laws phase in night driving. According to the U.S. Federal Highway Administration the fatal crash rate of 16-19 year-olds is about four times as high at night as it is during the day.

• Driving on rural roads — Driving on rural roads offers some unique challenges for drivers, including hairpin turns, limited sight lines and two-lane highways that aren’t well lit. Make sure teens get plenty of time on these roads while you can assist with coaching them.

• Driving in traffic — Like it or not, commuting is a fact of life for millions of motorists. Traffic congestion and len-gthy commutes raise stress levels and can make tempers flare. New drivers not only need to learn how to cope with rapidly changing conditions, but with inconsiderate drivers who speed, tailgate, run traffic lights, and make unsafe lane changes.

Before your teen takes the wheel, parents should plan a series of progressively more difficult practice sessions in a variety of situations. Give beginners ample time to work up to new challenges like driving on freeways, or in the rain. New drivers should be permitted to learn from their mistakes, but never

allow them to drive into a situation that’s risky or beyond their ability.

Parents literally have the opportunity of a lifetime. Positive reinforcement from the passenger seat helps get teens through these challenging driving situations and builds a solid foundation of safe driving habits.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT — Supervised driving practice builds confidence.

The purchases you make every day will reward you when you use the AAA Member Rewards Visa® credit card. There’s no limit on how much you can earn and no spending categories that change quarterly.

The Member Rewards card can be used for everything from your gym membership to your phone bill to a family vacation. Any purchases you make will earn points.

Depending on what you purchase, you’ll get at least one point for every dollar you spend. If you use the credit card to make purchases at the grocery store, drug store or at the gas pump – and who doesn’t have these expenses on a regular basis – you will earn two points for every dollar spent.

Where the credit card gets really rewarding is when you use it to make qualifying purchases at AAA, including travel, merchandise and insurance. Every dollar spent with AAA on qualified purchases earns three points. Next time you have to renew your membership, why not use the card and earn triple points?

You can start redeeming those points for 1% cash back starting with as few as 5,000 points. To illustrate, if you spend $100 a week at the grocery store, over the course of a year you’ll have spent $5,200. At 2 points per $1, that comes out to 10,400 points or $104 cash back. See how fast your points can add up?

There’s no end to how the Member Rewards card can work in your favor. Use it to purchase large ticket items or to pay for your travel arrangements. It makes sense to use a credit card with reward points rather than writing a check for a large amount. It’s money back in your pocket.

The Member Rewards card comes with a lot of flexibility, too. Cardholders can choose to redeem points for a variety of options. Exclusive rewards include AAA vouchers good for travel, car repairs at AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities, gift cards, a statement credit, car rentals and hotel stays in the U.S.

Using a credit card to pay for everyday purchases can also be safer than carrying cash or using a debit card. If lost or stolen, Member Rewards Visa cardholders have zero liability protection against fraudulent purchases.

Right now, there’s more reason than ever before to apply for the card. When you open up a new account in one of our AAA branch offices, you’ll qualify for a $100 statement credit if you make at least $250 in purchases within 90 days of activating the account.

It’s a great offer, exclusive for our members. Here at AAA, we believe that financial rewards and benefits are what our members have come to expect. The Member Rewards credit card is just one of the many reasons your membership has real value.

MORE REWARDING — The AAA Member Rewards Visa® card lets you earn points on your purchases.

FOR MORE INFORMATIONAbout rates, fees, other costs and benefits associated with the use of this credit card, or to apply, visit a AAA branch office. Earn 1 point per dollar of new net retail purchase transactions (qualifying purchases less credits, returns and adjustments) charged to the card each billing cycle. Earn 2 points per dollar for purchases made with the card at any eligible gas, grocery or pharmacy retail merchant categories as designated by Bank of America. Earn 3 points per dollar for purchases made with the card through any participating AAA Club when AAA is the merchant of record, or at eligible retail travel merchant categories as designated by Bank of America. Points expire (5) years from the end of the billing cycle during which the points were earned. Additional restrictions apply. Details accompany new account materials. SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 20156

For many Americans, it’s hard to eke out a living and secure a nest egg for retirement. Fortunately, there are plenty of financial experts offering advice on how to save for the “golden years.” But that’s definitely not the case when it comes to skilled professionals with solutions on how to safeguard your life savings from identify theft.

If you are retired or are close to retirement, protecting your nest egg from identify thieves is more vital today than ever, as is becoming aware of the different scams fraudsters use to separate you from your money. Here are some steps to preserve your investments:

• If you get a call from someone you don’t know to donate funds to a sure-fire investment opportunity, hang up the phone. A legitimate financial institution won’t just call you out of the blue with a windfall opportunity.

• Find a secure place to store Social Security numbers and medical information. Carry only necessary infor-mation in your wallet.

• If you get checks in the mail, such as Social Security, arrange to have

them deposited directly into your bank account. Identity thieves are known to watch seniors’ mailboxes.

• Love your family members, but be aware that the majority of identity theft against seniors can be attributed to friends, family members or caretakers. It's sad, but true, that the people closest to you have the highest probability of taking advantage of you.

• Place limits on the amounts that anyone can withdraw from your bank accounts without actual verification of who they are. For example, someone authorized to pull money from your account could use an ATM without having to go inside the bank to see a teller.

• Monitor your credit reports regularly. Check for erroneous infor-mation and to spot identity theft. Checking your credit reports can also help you monitor how you spend money.

As we age, we generally become more vulnerable to fraud. Getting older sometimes makes it harder to make effective and safe financial decisions. It can’t hurt to put some safeguards in place right now to protect your hard-earned assets.

As a smart first step, AAA members can sign up for ProtectMyID® identity theft monitoring, an online program that simply requires computer access and an email address. It’s a member benefit with two levels of protection: ProtectMyID Essential and ProtectMyID Deluxe. It’s just another way AAA offers members peace of mind. For more information on how to get started, visit AAA.com/protectmyid or stop by a local AAA office for details.

ProtectMyID Essential and Deluxe are provided by ConsumerInfo.com, Inc., an Experian company.

Seniors Need to Safeguard Their Assets From FraudstersSteps you can take to protect your nest egg

Finding fraud: Where to look and what

to look forCredit reports and credit statements are often the first places evidence of fraud shows up. If you only look at your reports once a year for free, you may miss warning signs, and identity theft could go unchecked for months. Signs of fraud that may appear on your credit report: • New credit accounts you don’t

recall opening • A home address for a location

where you’ve never lived (your credit report includes your current and past residences)

• Late or missed payments on accounts you’ve always paid on time (payment history is a key portion of the report)

• Entries indicating you have a judgment or collections action against you

Check your credit accounts at least once a month for signs of fraud, including: • Charges you don’t recall making • Withdrawals, transfers or cash

advances you didn’t authorize • Notices of account changes you

didn’t request, such as a credit limit increase or the addition of another person as an authorized account user.

PROTECT YOUR ASSETS — Identify thieves often target seniors with their scams.

Alaska in February? Crazy, right? Make that “crazy awesome”! In today’s lingo that translates into unique, unusual and you-need-to-experience-it-to-believe-it!

It’s true: AAA’s Ultimate Alaska Winter Wonderland tour does depart on Feb 25, right in the middle of Old Man Winter’s reign. But that’s exactly what makes this trip special. This is when true Alaskans reclaim their stunning state from the hordes of tourists who descend upon it in summer. And it’s also the time of a wondrous natural phenomenon — the Aurora Borealis.

And what can make it even more special is the $50.00 Dick’s Sporting Goods Gift Card available to AAA members who book & deposit through 9-30-15. Use your Gift Card to shop for warm boots, gloves, scarves or hats...or whatever else you’ll need!

Begin in the interior city of Fairbanks with a nighttime excursion in search of the beguiling Aurora Borealis. This natural light display in the sky can vary in brightness from barely visible to the naked eye to bright enough to read at night. The Northern Lights were named after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for the north wind, Boreas.

Visit the Morris Thompson Cultural Center and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Then, once again, ascend hills outside Fair-banks for Northern Lights viewing.

The next morning, settle into comfortable seats aboard the Alaska Railroad, whose cars feature grand picture windows and open-air vestibules — excellent for unobstructed photos of the Great Land. In winter, the land along your scenic jour-ney to the quaint village of Talkeetna takes on a quiet, mystical character. Keep an eye out for wildlife and views of Mt McKin-ley from the north face to the south face.

Enjoy an entire day at leisure to explore Alaska’s largest city...or opt to flight-see through the Chugach Mountains...or try dog sledding with an Idi-tarod musher!

Motorcoach via scenic Seward Highway, one of America’s most beautiful highways, past Chugach State Park’s 3,000-foot-high mountains jutting up on your left. On the right, the sprawling, sometimes 4-mile-wide flats of Turnagain Arm stretch like a plain to the opposite shores of Cook Inlet, where mammoth mountains abruptly stop their flat expanse. Each turn reveals another wonder!

Visit a Wildlife Conservation Center to see wildlife close up and a Sealife Center for an in-depth look above and below the water.

Spend 2 nights and a full day at leisure at Girdwood’s luxurious Alyeska, Alaska’s only 4-diamond hotel & restaurant and its premier year-round resort. Nestled in a lush

valley surrounded by peaks, hanging glaciers and spectacular ocean views, the Alyeska offers luxurious accommodations and convenient access to the magnificent Alaskan wilderness. Relax at the on-site spa or take advantage of optional activities such as dog sledding, snow machining (Alaskan for “snowmobiling”), flightseeing, downhill skiing or snowshoeing. An included tram ride offers spectacular views of the valley.

Back in Anchorage, tour historic downtown and lakes Hood & Spenard. Visit the Alaska Zoo for a behind-the-scenes tour. End the day at the Mushers’ Banquet for

participants (the human ones, at least!) of the world-famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race.

Meet 4-time Iditarod champion Martin Buser at his Happy Trails Kennel. Hear personal stories while glimpsing the gran-deur Alaska has to offer along the Iditarod Trail. Return to Anchorage to visit the Iditarod Headquarters and see first-hand a replica Iditarod Trail station.

Next morning, grab a spot along 4th Avenue for the cermo-nial start of the Iditarod festivities. See mushers from all over and enjoy other activities. In the afternoon, catch some of the cultural opportunities at the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

Venture north on your last day, stopping in Wasilla (home-town of Alaska’s former governor) for your day’s on-own lunch items. At Willow, the official Re-Start of the Iditarod Dog Sled Race, watch the mushers and their teams take off on their 1,131-mile journey to Nome.

This was the best vacation EVER! The

accommodations and meals were excellent. We were busy, but we still had enough time

to explore. If given the opportunity, we would

take this trip again.Jeanne Bastarache

Be a snowbird & escape winter for 28 nights:Rent a furnished Florida “nest” for your family and / or your friends!

Just because you don’t own a home in Florida is no reason you can’t be a “snowbird” and live the leisurely (and warm!) life-style of the Sunshine State for 28 nights (Saturday-to-Saturday weeks) in 2016. AAA Travel has just what you need: 4-week Saturday-to-Satur-day rentals of a roomy furnished vacation home in peaceful Port Charlotte!

On the southwest Gulf Coast just 100 miles south of Tampa and 65 miles north of Naples, Port Charlotte is a premier ecotourism destination that’s off the beaten path and free of crowds, yet offers sailing, boating, fishing, birding, shopping, dining, arts & more.

One of Sail magazine’s 10 Greatest Places to Sail, the Charlotte Harbor area offers na-ture adventures like canoeing/kayaking on 53 trails, exploring 5 national wild-life refuges and discovering prime birding opportunities. There are more than 70 parks & preserves, 16 golf courses and numerous sporting events and recreational facilities. Cultural pursuits include visual arts, theater, dance and music (Port Charlotte is home to the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra). No wonder Money magazine called it Best Place to Retire.

Choose from a selection of attractively landscaped homes, and use yours as a base from which to explore the local area’s uncrowded beaches and/or the many attractions within comfortable driving distance. Or just settle in, take advantage of the screened-in swim-ming pool and laugh at winter back home!

Get away from it all...or invite family and/or friends to share some Florida fun with you. These 3-bedroom/2-bathroom (some with 2.5) homes can comfortably sleep 6 (bedding/linens provided). They feature fully equipped kitchens (dishwasher, stove/oven, refrigera-tor/freezer, microwave) and dining areas for everyone to gather in...screened-in heated pools for swimming, lounging and loafing! Living rooms feature entertainment centers (with cable). Optional weekly cleaning/linen service is available for an additional fee.

Imagine not having to shovel snow this winter...and watching the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico instead. Forget about bundling up just to go to the corner store...and slipping into a soothing pool after dining on your patio instead. With AAA’s help, you can look forward to winter this year; contact a AAA travel agent now!

Rates vary by home selected, are subject to availability at time of booking and include accommodations, taxes & fees and pool heating fee. Visit AAA.com/HomeRentals.

M AGNÍFICO! Even if you know no other Spanish or Portuguese, this one word sums up all of the sights, culture, foods and experiences you’ll encounter & enjoy

on AAA’s 12-night “Spain’s Classics & Portugal” tour that departs on April 6, 2016.

To make it even more magnífico, AAA offers mem-bers a discount of as much as $400 when they book and deposit by Sept 30, 2015. Classic AAA members will save $325, Plus members $350 and Premier members $400 (per room, double occupancy).

Spain & Portugal occupy southwestern Europe’s im-mense peninsula called Iberia, a name derived from the Ebro, Spain’s largest river by volume. Both nations played pivotal roles in the “discovery” of the New World. And now, more than 5 centuries later, Americans in increas-ing numbers are discovering the pleasures of these lands blessed with abundant sunshine and a wealth of historical, cultural, gastronomical and recreational riches.

PORTUGALStep off the plane in Lisbon; its charms and style make

it one of Europe’s last “undiscovered” capitals, and it invariably surprises and delights visitors. Wind your way among its hilly, narrow alleys aboard a similarly narrow streetcar to find neighborhood taverns where traditional fado vocalists reveal the soulful depths of the Portuguese personality.

A guided tour of Lisbon features the Moorish Alfama Quarter, Jerónimo’s Monastery (a Unesco World Heritage site), the Monument to the Discoveries and the Tower of Belém.

On the Silver Coast, visit the pilgrimage town of Fátima, a testament to Portugal’s Catholic heritage. View Batalha

Monastery (UWH) and visit quaint towns, including Obi-dos and its medieval-era walls.

Exclusive AAA Excursion (included): Portugal’s sophisticated “Riviera” is the “playground of kings.” Visit the fairy-tale palaces of Sintra (UWH). See the westernmost point in continental Europe, the rugged coastline, wind surfers and Estoril, known for luxurious homes & gardens.

SPAINOnce a global empire and colonial power, Spain ruled

many parts of the world throughout history. Today, it’s a country with an unhurried, relaxed atmosphere — and a place welcoming to travelers from all over the world. You’ll sense its former glory and its present hospitality on your tour of Madrid, the vibrant capital, especially at its lively and historic center (the Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor). After a fascinating tour of the Royal Palace’s lavish halls, banquet rooms, throne room, armory and courtyard, travel south to Toledo, a UWH site and Spain’s glorious medieval capital. Marvel at its Gothic cathedral, a 13th-century synagogue and Santo Tomé (church home of El Greco’s The Burial of Count Orgaz).

Exclusive AAA Excursion (included): Madrid never sleeps...and nights are a crucial part of the capital’s life-style. Enjoy Old World ambience and traditional Castil-ian tapas in the city’s heart. Then view and visit its many attractive sites illuminated at night, including the Cibeles Fountain and the Gran Via thoroughfare.

Continue on to the extraordinary Moorish-flavored city of Córdoba. Tour the Mezquita (UWH), an architectural marvel built by the Moors in the 8th century as a mag-nificent mosque, which then became the city’s cathedral in the 16th century. See also its well-preserved Jewish Quarter.

In Seville, Spain’s “cultural capital,” see Columbus’ tomb, the ornate cathedral (UWH) and Giralda Bell Tower. Enjoy a walking tour of quaint old Santa Cruz Quarter with its bright flowers, white-washed buildings and winding streets. Visit Plaza de España and María Luisa Park, one of Europe’s loveliest. Top it off with regional cuisine and an unforget-table flamenco performance by Seville’s top dancers.

Another UWH site awaits at Granada’s immense hilltop palace; Alhambra is a marvel of geometric patterns, tile-work, fountains and gardens.

In Valencia, a treasure trove of Roman and Arabic architecture surrounded by citrus groves, visit Lladro and learn about the history and making of its world-famous porcelain figurines. A “paella experience” reveals where this Valencia rice & seafood dish originated and how it’s made — and includes a tasty paella lunch!

Last but not least, Barcelona buzzes with life! See the city’s sights, including Antonio Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia (UWH), Parc Güell, Casa Batlló and the unconventional Casa Milà.

Exclusive AAA Excursion (included): Tantalize your tastebuds at Moncho’s, a popular waterfront res-taurant in Barcelona famous for fine seafood and Cata-lan regional cuisine. After dinner, enjoy a panoramic evening tour of this unique city.

By tour’s end, you’ll agree that Spain & Portugal are indeed magnífico!

With an average price of $27,000, a car is typically the second-most expensive purchase we make, after our homes. Seeking out unbiased information before you buy can help you spend your money wisely and get exactly what you want.Vehicle Basics

Consumer websites and pub-lications provide key information such as gas mileage, passenger seating, safety features, available options and more. You’ll want to know these details because they can affect what you pay at the dealer and over time. One other consideration: knowing if the car you want is being redesigned or discontinued in the near future. Last summer, for example, Toyota Camry buyers enjoyed deep discounts on 2014 models just ahead of the fall release of a redesigned 2015 edition, so it pays to keep an eye on the car industry.Actual Costs

Whether you’re buying a new or used vehicle, have an idea of a reasonable price to pay before visiting the dealer’s lot. That information is available through the AAA Car Buying

Service, as well as other services. If you’re buying a new car, research can reveal the invoice price of the car (what the dealer paid the distributor for it). Use that as the starting point for negotiation, not the sticker price (what the dealer wants you to pay). You also can uncover what others have paid for the same model locally, manufacturer rebates available and future resale value. Likewise, if you’re looking at a used vehicle, these services can help you discover recent resale prices for that car model in your area, as well as the repair history of a specific vehicle.Professional Reviews

Always consider the sources of your information. Glossy sales brochures are designed to show a vehicle in the best possible light. Much better: objective reviews available online or in print, from independent experts who road-test vehicles professionally. These reviews provide a critical analysis of a vehicle’s strengths and weaknesses, performance, reliability, fuel economy and options.

Owner FeedbackSee what average people have to

say about the car you’re considering. An online search for the car’s make and model, plus the words “user” and “forum,” will find websites where people share their experiences with their cars. This is especially helpful if you’re thinking about a used car— owners can tell you what it’s like to drive it over time. New or used, it’s important to drive a car yourself to draw your own conclusions before you

Thanks to 20-plus years of successful education and awareness campaigns, the consequences of driving drunk have become a part of our country’s safety vernacular—we know the dangers, and we’ve made great strides to reduce DUI rates and deaths across the country. Yet, the subject of drugged driving has received fairly limited attention.

Unfortunately, too many Amer-icans are unaware of the dangers, and this is especially true for teens and young adults who have the least experience—both in life and behind the wheel. Factor in the use of substances that can impair motor skills, and the combination becomes a recipe for disaster.

Drugged driving is lethal at any age, but especially so for teens ages 15 to 19, for whom motor vehicle crashes are already the leading cause of death. According to a 2014 study by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research, almost half—49.1 percent—of high school seniors in the class of 2014 indicated they have tried an illicit drug, and one in four— 23.7 percent—reported having used an illicit drug in the last 30 days.

As more states enact laws or consider legalizing marijuana for medicinal or recreational use, its availability to teens is likely to increase, and many parents underestimate the potency of today’s cannabis (estimated to have tripled in the past two decades).

After alcohol and tobacco, it’s the most widely used illicit drug among high school students—44 percent of seniors report having used marijuana at least once in their lifetime.

And marijuana is just one facet of the drugged driving problem—it holds company with a prominent list of substances that include over-the-counter and prescription medications. After marijuana, prescription drugs are the most commonly abused by teenagers according to the Centers for Disease Control, with about 18 percent of high school students taking drugs such as OxyContin, Vicodin, codeine, Ritalin or Xanax without a doc- tor’s prescription one or more times during their lives.

Then there are drivers who have both drugs and alcohol or more than one drug in their system, creating another set of dangerous issues. Current national estimates of teenage drinking and driving range from 10 percent to 12.5 percent, and a national study found that 21 percent of high school students report riding with an impaired driver in the past month. The addition of teens’ feelings of invincibility, misplaced overconfidence, negative media messaging and exposure to social pressure from peers creates a potent cocktail for tragedy when mixed with inexperience behind the wheel.

“Teens are just starting to drive and don’t have the experience that

adults do,” said former National Transportation Safety Board member Mark Rosekind. “Even when it comes to over-the-counter stuff, they’re not going to be thinking about the side effects. Any time you get the chance to tell teenagers about the dangers of impaired driving, you should take it. Getting the message to them early is so important.”

As National Teen Driver Safety Week approaches Oct. 19-25, AAA and federal agencies realize that the key is emphasizing the dangers of impairment before teens get behind the wheel. AAA recently began raising awareness and understanding among its members and the general public, and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has initiated three research

projects to help understand potential safety implications. The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy has made preventing drug use by teen drivers a priority, creating a toolkit that acts as a blueprint for how to start the conversation in individual communities about these issues.

Putting the brakes on drugged driving requires action by all of us. It will require a comprehensive approach—from frank dinner table discussions at home to more uniform impaired driving laws across states and agreement on how to enforce them. We have our work cut out for us, but when it comes to impaired driving, none of us are above the influence.

VIN etching, which is harmless to windows, is a theft deterrent measure in which a vehicle’s identification number is gently etched into all its glass. Thieves generally avoid VIN-etched vehi-cles because all of the glass must be stripped and replaced before the vehicle can be unloaded or resold; a costly and time-consuming process. No appointment is necessary for this procedure.

AAA East Central is partnering with the Lehigh Valley Auto Theft Task force to offer complimentary VIN etchings to AAA members and non-members.

If you’re lucky, you live where Nature puts on one last show before settling down into winter’s sleep. As days shorten and temperatures cool, the green palette of summer foliage is transformed into a vivid autumn palette of red, orange and gold before the leaves fall off the trees. El Monte RV can put you back in touch with nature at its finest.

New England is famous for the spectacular autumn colors of its trees, but the Adirondack, Appalachian, Smoky and Rocky Mountains are also clad with colorful displays. In the East you’ll find the reds, oranges, golds and bronzes of the woodlands; in the West, the bright yellows of aspen stands and larches contrast with the dark evergreens.

Many of the Forest Service’s 100-plus scenic byways were planned with autumn color in mind. In 31 states you can drive on over 3,000 miles of scenic byways and experience a beautiful, colorful drive.

The change in color is not very predictable, but it generally starts in late September in New England and moves southward, reaching the Smoky Mountains by early November. About this time, the colors will begin to change in the high-elevation mountains of the

West. Remember that cooler high elevations will color up before the valleys. The Forest Service’s Fall Color Hotline (1-800-354-4595) can provide more details as the autumn color display progresses.

The following is a list of some of the more popular, and colorful, road trips:

• Acadia National Park – Maine, especially Park Loop Road

• Adirondacks Region – New York, especially Central Adirondack Trail

• Blue Ridge Parkway – from Great Smoky Mountains National Park in NC to Shenandoah National Park in VA

• Coconino National Forest – Arizona, General Crook Trail Loop Road

• Kancamagus Scenic Byway – New Hampshire, White Mountain National Forest

• Keweenaw Peninsula – Michigan, Highways 26 and 41 to Copper Harbor

• Lake Champlain Valley – Vermont, Burlington to the Lake Champlain Islands

• Mark Twain National Forest – Missouri, especially Skyline Drive and Sugar Camp National Scenic Byway

• San Bernardino National Forest – California, Rim of the World Scenic Byway

• San Juan Skyway – Colorado, loops from Durango through Ouray, Telluride and Cortez back to Durango

Whatever route you choose, you can see all the colors of autumn in the comfort of an El Monte RV. AAA members save up to 10% on RV rentals – call 1-800-337-2156 for reservations.

Tips for Fall Foliage Trips Pre-Planned Routes for

Autumn Getaways Take the guesswork out of

planning a fall leaf-peeping trip. AAA has several pre-planned routes that will take you through some of the most colorful sections of our region. These AAA Drive Trips are available online at AAA.com/drive.

One standout in the Mid-Atlantic Region is the “Northwestern Pennsylvania Fall Foliage Tour.” The northern half begins at Lake Erie and loops along Route 6, a AAA Scenic Byway. The southern half meanders through the backwoods and less-traveled roads of the Allegheny Forest. Allow time to stop at a pumpkin patch for a jack o’ lantern. Sip on cider at a roadside stand. Drive through charming hamlets and enjoy the picturesque homes and old-fashioned shops. Visit a maritime museum, stroll across a railroad bridge or tour a brewery. Share the right-of-way with an Amish buggy or a herd of elk.

Experiences like these and more are available on every AAA Drive Trip. Each routing includes an overview map, estimated driving time, mileage count, and photos of attractions along the way.

How would you rather spend $35 in Chicago—paying the average price to park your car for the day or taking in the Chicago skyline from the top of Navy Pier’s iconic Ferris wheel?

No matter the city, parking fees and time spent searching for the best spot can be a hassle.

Parking prices have climbed over the years, as cities and neighborhoods expand and develop, cashing in on parking fees. Major U.S. cities and top tourist spots have some of the highest daily parking rates, according to the most recent Colliers International Parking Rate Survey.

Honolulu, New York City, and Chicago will cost drivers the most when it comes to securing a place to park.

Whether you’re planning to drive to your destination, or renting a car when you arrive, booking with Hertz saves.

Median daily parking rates run the highest at about $42 in Honolulu, about $31 in the Big Apple and just less than $30 in Los Angeles.

A Hertz car gives renters access to parking at all Hertz rental locations, saving time and money.

Traveling abroad can be a rewarding experience. But unexpected events can sometimes spoil even the most carefully crafted vacation. What if you’re suddenly unable to go because of an illness to a non-traveling loved one? What do you do if your luggage is lost or stolen, or you or a family member is injured while away from home?

With features like comprehensive trip cancellation and primary emergency medical coverage, and 24-hour travel assistance, the Family Care Plan from Allianz Global Assistance, is the perfect traveling companion. And there’s no charge for kids 17 and under when traveling with parents or grandparents, and no surprise processing fees! This makes travel insurance premiums more affordable, particularly for families with young children.

Should your luggage fail to arrive when you do, the plan now offers increased baggage protection. Baggage loss and damage coverage is $1,000 — double that of comparable packages. Baggage delay coverage has been increased to $300, a 50 percent improvement over previous plans.

TripAssist Family Care also provides expanded trip cancellation
