Tourism and visitor economy
Grow domestic and international visitationIncrease visitor spendFlow on economic benefits to regionEmployment creationSupport complementary commercial opportunities
6.5 Benefits to be realised
The master plan presents a balanced and coordinated strategy to guide the precinct’s future and meet the needs of its key stakeholders and users. This is a necessary step in identifying and managing what makes the precinct unique and special, and how we can protect these attributes, while also building its brand, as an internationally recognised destination.
While several stakeholders voiced concerns about the impact of commercial activities, eco-tourism and growth in visitation on the natural environment and wildlife present within the You Yangs precinct, improvements and change are inevitable to:
• maintain safe and sustainable operations;
• better manage the condition of the reserve;
• improve access and connectivity, which is at present lacking; and
• reach its potential as an internationally recognised destination within the Geelong-Bellarine region.
Several social, environmental and economic benefits shall be realised through delivering the master plan, which are summarised in Figure 26, to the right.
While the precinct itself will benefit enormously from the proposed improvements and rehabilitation measures, the master plan will also indirectly benefit the broader region. Not only in terms of tourism and related visitor spend, but through building long-lasting relationships and partnerships, to deliver on the proposed initiatives and support other strategic projects within the region.
Natural values
• Better visitor management
• Improve natural resource management
• Wildlife and habitat protection measures
• Appreciation of natural values
Cultural Heritage
• Strengthen partnership andwork towards joint management with Wadawurrung
• Protect areas of significance
• Greater appreciation of cultural values
• Support Wadawurrung in delivering cultural initiatives
Social and Recreational
• Enhance liveability
• Further promote active lifestyles
• Improved visitor experience
• Build alliances and partnerships
• Raise profile of the precinct and region
Site operations and maintenance
• New programs to improve site and asset management
• Promote further partnerships to assist with site operations and maintenance
Broader benefits
• Economic benefits for the broader region and state through increased visitation
• Drive demand for complementary activities - accommodation, health and wellness activities, food and beverage retail etc
