How can we provide grade school students with a support system that helps them gain self confidence and motivation
in developing their academic abilities?
10 week group project - Fall 2014

Momentum
64% of students in urban public schools receive free or reduced price lunches
The average high school graduation rate in America's biggest urban school districts, is only about 50%
High school graduation rates in America’s largest urban school districts average 52%*
The Problem
“I think what we haven’t talked about enough is that we’re competing with the gangs, we’re competing with the drug dealers on the corner, and when students fall through the cracks, when young people don’t have that positive mentor, in a school setting, in the church or community, there’s always a guy on the street corner that can say come my way.”
-Arne Duncan, the United States Secretary of Education
*Jonathan Guryan, Associate Professor of Human Development and Social Policy at Northwestern University, Chair of IPR’s Program on Education Policy
The Solution
We asked, why don’t we connect students with the resources that are available in each city - the schools, the businesses, the community. This has the potential to create a stronger
community and support system for students. This system would help students realize that there are many people who care about their well being and academic success. If conducted
successfully, this system could be paid forward through multiple generations.
We started with thinking about the user journey, motivators for students to stay in school, and encouragements for students to join and stay with the program. We then generated lots of hand sketched wireframes, refined it down, conducted multiple user tests to gather feedback, refined more hand sketched wireframes, produced digital wireframes, gathered feedback, and utilized that input to develop rendered comps.

As a financial advisor, I am happy that I am making a positive impact on my community. Growing up with a single mom showed me that determination and hard work get you part of the way - the other portion is having help from other people who care about your well being. I am very grateful that I was able to go to college, and that I now have a good job. I want to give back to the place that raised me by helping members of my community realize their full potential and assist them in planning for the future.

What does it mean to be Enterprising?
Enterprising individuals are ambitious, adventurous, sociable and self-confident. They enjoy activities that require them to persuade others, such as sales, and seek out leadership roles. They are invigorated by using their interpersonal, leadership and persuasive abilities to obtain organizational goals or economic gain but may avoid routine or systematic activities. They are often effective public speakers and are generally sociable but may be viewed as domineering. They view themselves as assertive, self-confident and skilled in leadership and speaking but lacking in scientific abilities.

Produce a short run of cups for an art museum café.
10 week project - Winter 2014
Recollection Teacup
This cup was designed for Marché, the art museum café on the University of Oregon campus. The form recalls the history of the teacup by referencing the shape and detail of 12th century Chinese and 18th century English teacups. The shape of the cup also makes it comfortable and easy to hold.

How can a bluetooth speaker integrate into the life of a new mother?
3 week group project - Spring 2014
Nurture
Speaking with new moms helped us realize that music plays a big role in their daily life, being involved in tasks such as playing, walking, and soothing their baby to sleep.
Throughout our interviews, the phone was consistently the main source of the music. Mothers stressed that, no matter the object, the baby will always try to find a way to get their hands on it. Because of this, it was vital for the speaker to be baby-friendly, baby-proof, and easy for the
mother to use, but difficult for the baby control.

From this feedback, we wanted to design a speaker that easily integrates into the life of a mother and child without worry. We decided to stay with a friendly rounded form that fits nicely in the hand. It was also important for the speaker to have simple controls and visual and tactile feedback through three buttons and color changing indicator lights to give mothers the ability to quickly manage songs.

How can you reduce the amount of pain a softball pitcher feels when hitting their hip?
Personal project - 2013
Pitching Harness
In response to a reoccurring problem that I personally encountered as a fastpitch softball pitcher, I sought out to develop a few solutions to decrease the amount of pain that is felt when the arm occasionally collides with the hip. Observational research, interviews, and online surveys were conducted to discover to what extent other pitchers had experienced this same problem. Through this research, it was discovered that hip hitting is fairly common and a few pitchers feel strong pain. Common areas of impact were located and diagramed. Participants who felt strong pain said that they have tried to work on their pitching mechanics to address the problem but no training drill has completely resolved the issue yet.
Primary Research
Three users tested the prototype, providing good feedback and suggestions for future prototypes. All subjects appreciated these aspects:
• Long term solution• Physical feedback • Keeps hips back• Adjustable• Lightweight• Compact • Easy setup
User Testing
Carabiner connects harness to the D-ring
Two D-rings accommodate both right handed and left handed pitchers
Triglides adjust the size of the loops for the legs
The resistance of the bungee cord gives the pitcher feedback
Stake secures the bungee in the ground
Cord lock adjusts the amount of resistance

To provide a space for common habits of storing utensils inside a food container, a food-safe silicone tray was designed to store utensils in an area separate from the food. The silicone acts as a spacer to keep utensils from clinking together while traveling and acting as a gasket to create a tight seal for the food inside. Snap tabs on the lid allow quick and easy opening and closing of the container. Clear Tritan plastic is microwave, dishwasher, and freezer safe. When the lid is placed upside down on a table, the tray can rest inside the groove, keeping the container sterile. A paper model was created from a CAD model to show the scale and details of the design.
