At the turn of the 20th century, female beachgoers took great pains to show modesty and cover themselves up. When French designers first introduced the bikini to the world on July 5, 1946, scandal erupted across the beaches of the Riviera.

The concept of the bikini was designed in France during the first war-free summer after the end of World War II. With Europe liberated, designers strove to liberate beach fashion. Designer Jacques Heim conceived his scandalous “atom,” which he billed as “the world’s smallest bathing suit.” However, it is Louis Réard who cleverly dubbed his suit the bikini, after the infamous Bikini Atoll, the Pacific island site where America conducted its test of the atomic bomb. In a time when gorgeous women were refered to as “bombshells,” Réard wanted his skimpy new bathing suit design to explode the world of fashion. And explode it did. Models refused to wear it. Serenity’s Auxiliary Fund! SALS GALS is an acronym that stands for ‘Serenity Assisted Living’s Gals’ which is our

auxiliary fund. The auxiliary fund is utilized to pay for musical entertainment at Serenity, go towards various fundraising efforts for equipment for our clients, and other items brought up by our clients at our monthly Resident Council Meetings!

We collect donations in various forms. There are piggy banks on our dining room tables...we call them our Treasured Tips. Feel free to drop a small amount if you are

joining your loved one for coffee or anytime.

Many times, memorial gifts following a funeral are donated to Serenity and designated for a specific project or item. An example of a few of these are the handicap door openers, pergola, and outdoor chairs at the East Campus. Other

times, donations are just made because it’s a good cause!

Serenity Assisted Living Culinary Club

For those who may miss cooking, we are starting a “club” at Serenity

called the Grub Club! See some of the logistics below and if you are

interested, please be sure to let Carol know.

LAST MONTH

We had a grilling theme for July. We started out by braising some ribs

for a few hours and finished them on

the grill. While that was cooking, we

made a loaf of homemade sun-dried

tomato bread. Paired with the ribs,

we whipped up a couple of different

BBQ sauces to sample. For a vegeta-

ble, we also grilled some corn on the

cob and topped them off with a cou-

ple of herbed butters. Using mint

from our very own

garden, we made a

lemon-mint cooler to

sip. Using even more

fresh vegetables from

our garden, we

whipped up a zucchini

dessert to finish! We

loved being able to

use so many fresh

things from the garden

this month!

Serenity’s

3rd Annual

For the third year, our Wellness and Life Enrichment

programs put on a mini golf tournament for our ladies and

gentlemen to compete in. We had over 50 participants in

our tournament and a whole lot of fun!
