Tow Bar to Vehicle Connection (Coupler Only)

1. Check the vehicle hitch ball, and mixer's coupler forsigns of wear or damage. Replace any parts that areworn or damaged before towing.

To reduce the possibility of an accident while transportingthe mixer on public roads, always make sure that themixer towing components and the towing vehicle are ingood operating condition and both units are mechanicallysound.

CAUTIONCAUTIONCAUTIONCAUTIONCAUTION

If the mixer tow bar is deformed or damaged, replace theentire tow bar. NEVER tow the mixer with a defectivetow bar. There exists the possibility of the mixer separatingfrom the towing vehicle.

CAUTIONCAUTIONCAUTIONCAUTIONCAUTION

The following list of suggestions should be used when towingthe mixer:

■ Check with your county or state safety towing regulationsdepartment before towing your mixer.

■ Make sure that the hitch and coupling of the towing vehicleare rated equal to, or greater than the trailer "gross vehicleweight rating" (GVWR).

■ ALWAYS inspect the hitch and coupling for wear. NEVERtow the mixer with defective hitches, couplings, chainsetc.

■ CHECK the tire air pressure on both the towing vehicleand the trailer. Also check the tire tread wear on bothvehicles.

■ ALWAYS make sure the mixer is equipped with a "SafetyChain".

■ ALWAYS attach trailer's safety chain to the frame oftowing vehicle.

■ ALWAYS make sure that the towing vehicle's directional, backup, and brake lights are working properly.

■ Remember in most cases the maximum speed unlessotherwise posted for highway towing is 55 MPH, howeverbefore towing your mixer, check your local state, andcounty vehicle towing requirements. Recommended off-road towing is not to exceed 10 or 15 MPH or lessdepending on type of terrain.

■ Place chocked blocks underneath wheels to preventrolling, while parked, if disconnected from towingvehicle.

■ Inflate tires to correct pressure, inspect tires for cuts, and excessive wear. See Table 4 (Tire WearTroubleshooting).

■ When towing of the mixer is required, place the drum inthe up position (mouth facing upwards) and lock the drumlatch.

Regularly Inspect Towing Components

ReplacingTowing Components

2. Use only a 2-inch ball diameter (towing vehicle), this willmatch the mixer's 2-inch coupler. Use of any other balldiameter will create an extremely dangerous conditionwhich can result in separation of the coupler and ball orball failure.

3. After tow bar has been connected to mixer (see nextpage), attach mixer's coupler to the hitch ball on thetowing vehicle securely and make sure the lock lever isin the down position (locked).

Mixer Tow Bar Vehicle Connection (Pentle and Loop)

1. Make sure the bumper on the towing vehicle is equippedto handle either a pentle or loop type tow bar configuration.

2. After tow bar has been connected to mixer (see nextpage), secure either type of tow bar to the towing vehicle, following state and county towing regulations.

3. As a minimum, use a 1/2-inch bolt and nylock nut grade5 when securing the tow bar to the towing vehicle and tothe unit being towed.

■ ALWAYS make sure that the fuel valve lever is in theOFF position (gasoline models only).

■ Check wheel mounting lug nuts with a torque wrench.Torque wheel lug nuts as described in the maintenancesection of this manual.

■ Check tightness of U-clamp nuts, torque suspensionhardware as referenced in the maintenance section ofthis manual.

■ Avoid sudden stops and starts. This can cause skidding,or jackknifing. Smooth, gradual starts and stops willimprove gas milage.

■ Avoid sharp turns to prevent rolling.

EM-90 PLASTER/MORTAR MIXER — OPERATION MANUAL — REV. #2 (12/11/06) — PAGE 15

EM-90 PLASTER/MORTAR MIXER — GENERAL INFORMATIONApplication

The MQ Essick EM-90 series mixers (drum capacity of 9.0cu. ft./254.8 liters) are shipped completely assembled andhave been factory tested and are ready for use.

This mixer is only intended for the production of plasterand mortar. The mixer must be used for its intended purposeand is not suitable for the mixing of flammable or explosivesubstances. The mixer must not be used in an explosiveatmosphere. This mixer has a batch capacity between 2-1/2and 3-1/2 bags.

Power Plants

The EM-90 can be powered by a Honda GX240K1HA2 air-cooled, 4-stroke gasoline engine or a 3 HP 115/230V electricmotor. Refer to Table 2 for specific engine or electric motordata information.

Electrical

If mixer is equipped with an electric motor, make sure thatthe power being supplied to the motor corresponds to thevoltage rating label on the motor. Supplying the wrong voltageto the electric motor will cause severe electrical damage tothe motor.

Always make sure the OFF/ON switch on the electric motoris in the OFF position before applying power.

It is strongly recommended when inserting the mixer'spower cord into a receptacle, that a G.F.C.I. (Ground FaultCurrent Interrupter) receptacle be used (115 VACapplications).

Extension Cables

The extension cable should be a 3-wire configuration thatincludes a ground wire that conforms to UL code. The wirecross section must be a minimum of 2.5 mm2. Choose anextension cord of adequate current carrying capacity as ref-erenced in Table 5. Remember cable distance affects thecurrent-voltage capacity of the extension cable.

Ensure that the extension cable is carefully laid out avoid-ing wet areas, sharp edges and locations where vehiclesmight run over it. Avoid allowing the extension cable to betrapped underneath the mixer.

Unroll the extension cable fully or it will overheat and couldcatch fire. Make sure that all extension cable connectionsare dry and safe. Replace any defective or badly worn ex-tension cable immediately.

Hardware

Check all hardware on the mixer before starting. Periodicallyinspect all hardware. Loose hardware can contribute to earlycomponent failure and poor performance. Use Table 4 asgeneral guideline when torqueing of mixer hardware isrequired. Remember to keep all mixer hardware componentstight.

Engine Maintenance

For basic engine maintenance, refer to the enginemaintenance section in this manual. For a more detailedengine maintenance, refer to the Honda Engine Owner'smanual furnished with the engine.

EM-90 PLASTER/MORTAR MIXER — MAINTENANCE (MIXER)Drum Head Seals

On each end of the mixing drum there is a drum headcontaining self-adjusting graphite seals. These seals consistof packing rings, split gland and spring activated adjusters.A properly maintained seal prevents material from workingaround the shaft, causing excessive wear. The following isthe suggested procedure of maintenance for protection ofthe paddle shaft.

1. Keep drum head clean of material build up so the springadjusters are free to work.

2. As the seals naturally wear, material will seep from thedrum head. Tighten the adjusting nuts equally until aslight pressure is felt (Figure 27). The seals are nowtight. This procedure should be done periodically as theseals leak.

Figure 27. Drum Seal Adjusting Nuts

3. Once the pressure plate touches the drum, its time toreplace the graphite seals (Figure 28).

Tire inflation pressure is the most important factor in tirelife. Pressure should be checked cold before operation. DONOT bleed air from tires when they are hot. Check inflationpressure weekly during use to insure the maximum tire lifeand tread wear.

Grease Fittings (Zerk) Maintenance (Electric Motor)

1. There are two grease (Figure 35) fittings at each end ofthe electric motor that will require lubrication. Lubricatethese fittings about every 16 months.

2. Use Poleyrex EM (Exxon Mobil) or equalivant lubricant.Clean grease fitting, apply grease gun to fitting (1/2shot). Remember too muchgrease or injecting grease tooquickly can cause prematurebearing failure. Slowly apply therecommended amount of grease, taking a miniute or so to apply.

EM-90 PLASTER/MORTAR MIXER — MAINTENANCE (MIXER)

DO NOT attempt to repair or modify awheel. DO NOT install an inter-tube tocorrect a leak through the rim. If therim is cracked, the air pressure in theinter-tube may cause pieces of the rim to explode (break-off) with great force and can cause serious eye or bodilyinjury.

WARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNING

ALWAYS wear safety glasses whenremoving or installing force fittedparts. Failure to comply may resultin serious injury.

Gear Lubrication

The surface of the pinion and main gear (Figure 34) shouldbe very lightly greased.

Figure 34. Pinion and Bull Gear Lubrication

Inspect Tooth Contact between Main Gear and DrivePinion

1. Coat 3 or 4 teeth at 3 different positions on the maingear with yellow paint.

2. Rotate the drive pulley in both directions.

3. Inspect the tooth pattern.

4. If gear teeth are not contacting properly (Figure 33),adjust pillow block to correct the problem.

Figure 33. Gear Teeth Alignment

NOTE Grease main and pinion gearsevery 250 hours of operation.IMPORTANT! Avoid over-greasing.

Excess grease will accumulate contaminates and causepremature wear.

Lug Nut Torque Requirements

It is extremely important to apply and maintain proper wheelmounting torque. Be sure to use only the fasteners matchedto the cone angle of the wheel. Proper procedure for attach-ment of the wheels is as follows:

1. Start all wheel lug nuts by hand.

2. Torque all lug nuts in sequence. See Figure 36. DO NOTtorque the wheel lug nuts all the way down. Tighten eachlug nut in 3 separate passes as defined by Table 10.

3. After first road use, retorque all lug nuts in sequence.Check all wheel lug nuts periodically.

Figure 36. Wheel Lug Nuts Tightening Sequence

NEVER! use an pneumatic air gunto tighten wheel lug nuts.NOTE

Suspension

The rigid type axle and associated hardware (Figure 37) shouldbe periodically inspected for signs of excessive wear, elon-gation of bolt holes, and loosening of fasteners. Replace alldamaged parts immediately.

Mixer Cleaning

1. ALWAYS disconnect the spark plug wire (gasolineengines) before cleaning the inside of the drum. If mixeris equipped with an electric motor remove power cordfrom AC power receptacle. In addition make sure theclutch engagement lever is dis-engaged.

2. Make sure the rear section of the safety grate isconnected to the mixing drum.

3. At the end of each day’s operation, place mixer drumin an upright position and spray inside of tubimmediately with water to prevent lumps of dried mortaror plaster from forming and contamination of futurebatches, DO NOT allow a buildup of materials to formon the blades or anywhere inside the drum.

4. Rotate mixer to dump position and remove debris.

5. Thoroughly clean the entire mixer, wheels, cabinetand frame.

6. NEVER! pour or spray water over the engine or electricmotor (Figure 38).

7. When cleaning of the entire mixer is done, return mixingdrum to an upright position.

Mixer Storage

For storage of the mixer for over 30 days, the following isrecommended:

Drain the fuel tank completely, or add STA-BIL to thefuel.

Run the engine until the fuel is completely consumed.

Completely drain used oil from the engine crankcaseand fill with fresh clean oil, then follow the proceduresdescribed in the engine manual for engine storage.

Clean the entire mixer and engine compartment.

Place the mixing drum in the down position (mouth facingdownward).

Cover the mixer and place it a clean dry area, that isprotected from harsh elements.
