or other equivalent product that may be found by the Manufacturer at the moment of the delivery of
the system.
The use of batteries with different capacity may lead to a working autonomy that will differ from
the one available with the supplied batteries.
As a not binding example, since these data strongly depend from the health of the batteries, from
temperature, form the number of working cycles and other parameters, a nominal working time may
be assumed as:
Batteries = N° 4 - 1,2 V batteries 1800mA/each
System’s power consumption = 300 mA
Nominal battery life = 6 ÷ 8 hours

3 Electrical connections
3.1 Instrument’s power supply Instrument has been developed in order to work with four high capacity NiMH AA 1,2 V
rechargeable batteries. It is possible to use batteries of different type and different capacity from the
one supplied, maintaining the compatibility with the supplied recharger.
Manufacturer indicates a finite number of charge /discharge cycles for the supplied batteries. As
indication around 1000 cycles may be expected.
In order to obtain best performances and working life as long as possible, Manufacturer suggests:
• Avoid to use such type of batteries with batteries built around different technologies.
• Use batteries that have equal capacity.
• Prior their use fully charge the batteries.
• Do NOT short circuit, do NOT solder, do NOT dismount, do NOT throw in the fire the
batteries..
• Respect indicated polarities when installing the batteries in the system.
• It is suggested to proceed, periodically, to a full discharge and charge cycle.
• The charge time depends from battery capacity and form the current supplied by the charger.
Prior to battery substitution it is mandatory to power off the instrument with power switch
[2], in order to avoid possible damages.
It is strongly required to respect polarity indication when installing new batteries in the unit
so to avoid damages to the batteries of the instrument. In the battery holder a sticker indicates
the polarity to be respected.
A female plug [5] is present, in order to connect an external power supply.
The following indications must be respected:
1. When the supplied power supply is used for long term measurements, all installed batteries
must be removed from the instrument.
2. The male connector of the external power supply must respect the following indications:
• positive of the power supply on the central connection;
• power supply ground (GND) on the external connection;
3. In order to have that the instrument works correctly (without any installed battery) it can be
powered with a power source with maximum output voltage of 5,5 Vdc and minimum
output voltage of 2 Vdc. In this condition the power supply must be in position to provide
continuatively 300 mA.
4. A continuous use of the serial connection of the measurement system to a remote computer
will increase the power consumption, having a consequent shorter battery life. When serial
connection to a remote computer is expected it is suggested to use the external line power
supply rather than the batteries.
Please refer to battery charger and external line power supply manual for Manufacturer’s
indications about its correct use.

3.2 Power status indicators When measurement system is powered on, power status GREEN LED indicates the presence of a
good power supply (unit powered by batteries or by external power supply).
When RED LED power on, it indicates that batteries are empty (after RED LED power on some
power remains in the batteries, but no warranty is given concerning the residual working time
available without any measurement degradation). In this condition it is mandatory to replace the
batteries since measurement quality cannot be assured for the poor quality of the power supply of
instrument. If both LEDs are OFF, it is mandatory to change the batteries with charged ones or to
use an external power supply in alternative.

3.3 Earth connection – CE norms
In order to obtain the best immunity to electrical disturbs, are suggested the following
recommendations:
• If instrument has an external power supply that is separated from the rest of the power
supplies, connect the “EARTH” terminal to a nearby earth connection of good quality.
• In this condition remember that the signals obtained from the instrument (analog output
signal, RS232 serial connection, etc.) are connected to earth.
Verify not to create earth loops.
• The best condition is obtained when all the power supplies are connected to earth in the
same point (quality of the used “earth connection” defines the immunity to disturbs).
• Avoid to place the instrument’s connection cables near high power cable.
In case no high disturbs sources are present, it can be
avoided to use this earth connection .
NOTE: the external metal housing is electrically
connected to earth if this connection is used .
Removable screw terminal
Terminal Use
1 Earth connection
2 Analog output signal GND
3 Analog output signal 1-4 V
3.4 Amplified analog output connections
By connecting high impedance instrumentation to the screw terminal 2 and 3 it is possible to read
and acquire (strip chart recorders or data loggers) the pre-amplified analogue signal obtained by the
TSS transducer. This signal is characterized by a fixed gain and a zero regulation (around 1 V),
performed by the Pitagora instrument when “C” zeroing pushbutton is pressed. The zeroing
procedure takes some seconds to complete. The 1 to 4 V reference signals are to be considered
nominal. Each measuring system will have an individual signal dynamics and the conversion of this
signal into engineering units must be computer for each system.

-12-
3.5 TSS transducer’s connection
The measurement system is based on Pitagora instrument and the TSS tensiometer transducer.
When using the system it is mandatory to remember the following:
1. On transducer’s label there is a serial number.
This transducer must be used exclusively with the Pitagora instrument to which it has been
matched when the Manufacturer’s calibration has been performed.
The transducer’s serial number is indicated also on instrument’s label and it is good practice
to check their correspondence before starting any measurement.
2. Transducer’s cable is terminated by a female M12, 5 pins connector, in order to ease the
connection to the instrument (male connector). In order to achieve the best quality of
connection, screw the locking ring nut to the instrument’s connector. Do not use the system
with temperatures higher than 60 °C and do not apply traction forces to the connections.
M12 connector Use
1 Supply +
2 Supply- 3 Signal +
4 Signal -
5 Not used
3.6 Serial connection
By means of a remote RS 232 serial connection it is possible to
transfer the measurements
performed by the instrument to a remote computer.
The connection cable must respect the following electrical connections Instrument Computer
T X R X
R X T X
G N D G N D
Generally a standard straight serial cable can be used, considering this pin assignment:
Pitagora - RS 232 Computer
DB 9pins female connector 9 pins connector 25 pins connector
TX 2 2 3
RX 3 3 2
GND 5 5 7
Battery life is reduced if serial connection to a remote computer is used continuously.
In this condition it is recommended to use the measurement system using the external power
supply.

4 TSS transducer
Reference Description
1 Transducer’s closing knob, to be used after the base [3] has been correctly
positioned on the warp
2 TSS transducer’s measuring element
3 Base, containing the two support bars [4]
4 Support bar (in steel – hard chromium plated surface)
5 M12 female connector
6 N° 2 fixing holes (M6) to be used to fix the transducer to an auxiliary fixed stand (A)
7 N° 4 fixing holes (M4) to be used to fix the transducer to an auxiliary fixed
stand (A)
8 Positioning pins of the measurement element [2] toward the base [3]
9 Transducer’s measuring probe (in steel – hard chromium plated surface)
10 Mating holes for the positioning pins [8] placed on the measurement element [2]

A) Keep the measuring system powered
on (TSS transducer and Pitagora
instrument) for some minutes and
proceed to the zeroing of the
measurement on the display (C
pushbutton), maintaining the
measurement element [2] parallel to
the plane defined by the wires of the
warp.
B) Install the base [3] on the warp, so
that it is supported by the warp in the
[4C] points.
C) When positioning the base [3] on the
warp it is needed to pull up the section
of warp whose tensioning will be
measured, placing it on top of the base
support bars, on the [4A] and [4B]
sections. Place the wires so that they do
not superimpose and they are using
all the available space in a homogeneous way.
E) Apply the measuring element [2] on the TSS
transducer’s base [3], inserting the positioning
pins [8] in the corresponding guiding holes [10].
F) Lock in position the TSS transducer’s closing
knobs.
It is now possible to start the measurement.
G) In order to avoid that the warp movement moves
the transducer from the choosed position, fix the
TSS transducer to the machine using the
connection g cable.
5 TSS transducer installation
D) The [4A] and [4B] sections, available to arrange the warp whose tensioning is to be measured, is
20 mm wide. Insert in [4A] and [4B] an amount of wires for a corresponding nominal tensioning
of around 30 to 40% of transducer’s full scale.
ATTENTION: avoid to touch the measuring probe
[9] and protect it from accidental hits that may apply
unwanted forces that may damage the transducer.
When the transducer is not used it is suggested to
keep the measuring element [2] fixed on the base [3],
having closed the locking knobs, so to protect the
measuring element. Avoid to use high pressure
compressed air to remove dust or dirty form the TSS
transducer.

The TSS transducer is a measuring instrument that can be damaged when the measuring probe [9] is
subject to excessive or anomalous loads, like torsions or other loads that are not corresponding to
the normal use of the unit when measuring warp tensioning.
When using the measurement system always consider wire dimensions. This measurement system
can measure with a variety of different type of wires, with an intrinsic flexibility that allow them to
be deviated by the measurement probe [9] from their natural running plane.
It is to be remembered that friction may influence the quality of the measurement performed by the
instrument.
The system has been calibrated using a cotton wire with an indicative diameter, when compressed,
of 0,2 mm, keeping the TSS transducer in movement toward the wires, so to consider the friction
effect in these conditions.
The measurement system has been calibrated by tensioning the wires at 2000 grams; this load is to
be considered as the full scale of the TSS transducer. In the transducer there is a load limiter, active
with loads higher than the nominal full scale.
Considered that this measurement system is directly applied on a small amount of the total height of
the warp, it is possible that its measurement differs from the one performed by other measurement
systems eventually installed on the machine, based on the measurement of the tensioning of the
total width of the warp (these measurement conditions are different and measurement is affected by
this different context).
6 Pitagora display instrument
6.1 Pitagora LCD display In order to avoid damages to the pushbuttons it is recommended to press as needed, without
exaggerating with the applied force and without using sharpened objects (like screwdrivers)
that may damage the membrane of the instrument.
The displayed measure is expressed in grams.
6.2 Display The LCD display of the Pitagora instrument (no backlight) supplies the following information:
1. Main display , 7 alphanumeric digits, 8 segments plus sign, able to display measurements up
to ± 9999999 or characters and words (capital or lower letter as needed the text readable)
2. Secondary display a 14 alphanumeric digits, used to display indications concerning the
current measurement on pre primary display or to indicate auxiliary indications during the
customization / calibration of the instrument
3. Bar display, with central zero position, to indicate the trend of the measured value.
Tensiometer’s preliminary manual - TSS V1 r. 4 dtd 06/02/06
-16-
4. MENU indication, active when the instrument is in the customization procedure, to indicate
with a numeric reference the current menu level.
5. indication of serial connection activity, with active data transfer. At instrument power on the
main display will show, in sequence, the following information to indicate a correct boot
sequence:
1. Pitagora Product name
2. V 2.10 Installed firmware version
3. MD 8 Instrument’s operating mode
6.3 Pitagora operation NOTE: before starting the measurement it is recommended to keep the measuring system (Pitagora
instrument connected to TSS transducer) some minutes to warm-up, so to stabilize its
characteristics.
The measurement displayed by Pitagora corresponds to:
Instantaneous warp tensioning – Zeroed tare.
The displayed measurement is updated with a rate that depends from:
1. Update frequency of the data generated by the A/D converter.
This frequency is set, by the Manufacturer, at 7,5 Hz to obtain a measurement with the
maximum stability and resolution.. By using the procedures described in this manual it is
possible to set higher update frequencies (up to 3,8 kHz), at detriment of the stability of the
measurement and, consequently, of the obtainable resolution.
2. Filter that will display the mean of 10 measures acquired every 10 milli seconds from the
A/D converter. The displayed value is updated every one second.
After having installed the TSS transducer on the warp it is recommended to let the machine work
for some time in order to let that the warp tensioning stabilizes, considering the temporary over
tensioning of the wires that is consequence of the installation of the transducer on the warp. The
installation of the transducer determines a natural over tensioning of the wires that are deviated by
the transducer and this increase of tensioning is recovered by the wires by letting the machine work
some time before considering the measurements.
The measurement displayed on the Pitagora display differs, as update frequency, form the
measurement that can be obtained by a serial connection to the measurement system, that is not
affected by the filtering applied at point 2.
The measuring system has been calibrated by the Manufacturer with the TSS transducer to which it
is matched (the serial number references are indicated on the labels applied on the products).
It is recommended to maintain the original matching of the units (Transducer and indicator unit) to
avoid measurement errors corresponding to slightly different calibration parameters on the Pitagora
unit, when it is not matched with the right TSS transducer.

ZEROING DONE
The transducer must not get in contact with the warp, unless the
zeroing procedure is completed.
In order to zero correctly the measurement, keep the TSS transducer
parallel to the plane defined by the wires of the warp, so that the
probe [9] of the measuring element does not get in contact with any
object that may apply unwanted loads..
Keep pressed the C pushbutton, until the Display [2] will indicate
ZEROING followed by a number ranging from 0 to 9, to indicate the
proceeding of the zeroing of the analogue signal and of the displayed
value.
At the end of the zeroing procedure the display will show ZEROING
DONE, getting back to the normal measurement modality.
The zeroing procedure may take up to 10 sec to be completed.
The zeroed measurement is defined as tare = TARE

7.1 General setting procedure
It is hereafter described the procedure to be used in order to modify one of the working parameters
of the Pitagora instrument. This procedure applies for all of the available menus.
Tensiometer’s preliminary manual - TSS V1 r. 4 dtd 06/02/06
-19-
7.2 Setting working parameters
NOTE: what described in this procedure allows to modify or set measurement system calibration,
Pitagora instrument plus TSS transducer, by defining a new set of LO and III reference values for
the system (these references allow the conversion of the measured data in engineering units).
By executing this procedure and storing in the instrument a new set of reference values, these will
substitute the existing ones that will be lost in an irreparable way.
Note that the DP parameter defines the decimal point position, with reference to the rightmost
digit of the display. If DP=0 decimal point is not shown. Decimal point has an “aesthetic”
function, since the calibration of the measurement system is performed (LO and IIi parameters)
already considering values expressed in the engineering unit and in the required resolution of
interest for the application.
The ADSPD parameter is set by Factory to 9, in order to obtain a displayed measure with the
highest stability (strong filtering) and resolution. If it is needed to measure faster change in
tensioning, the measure has to be read through the serial connection to the Pitagora instrument,
setting the desired ADSPD value, as required by the application.
