Save Our StarAt a well attended meeting on 11th March inthe village hall proposals were put forward topurchase The Star from Adnams by thevillagers for the village. At that time itappeared that as Adnams had no prospectivetenant to replace Julie when she leaves on31st March, there was a real likelihood of thepub closing. Adnams had named their price, and other conditions of sale which were madeknown at the meeting.

Those present at the meeting were invited toindicate how much money they wereindividually prepared to contribute. This fellshort of the required sum by a considerableamount. A small committee was formed tocontinue to work to “Save our Star”. Whilstoutright purchase of the pub remains themost desirable outcome, other ways ofkeeping The Star open were explored.

All concerned are now delighted to learn thatAdnams have found prospective tenants, towhom a formal offer has been made, and atthe time of writing they are in the process offinalising matters to hand over the business.

The committee would like to thank Julie for allher help and wish both her and her successorsthe best of luck in the future and that thevillage will welcome and support the newtenants. Anthony Attfield, John Blades, and Bernard Orme

Recycling DVDsWith the continuing success of the bookborrowing scheme in the Village Hall, it hasnow been suggested that we try the same ideawith DVDs. So - if you have any discs that havebeen watched many times and are nowcluttering up valuable cupboard space - whynot bring them to the Village Hall and put themon the shelf where a space has been clearedfor them. Newspapers are getting very free withtheir weekend offers so these would also bevery welcome.

It goes without saying that only unwantedDVDs should be donated as we cannotguarantee their return once they have left theHall. Happy watching! Richard Havard

With the warmer weather encouragingdoorstep callers onto our streets, residents arebeing warned to watch out for bogus deals orbogus offers to check services.

You can play your part by keeping watch andreporting any concerns by calling ConsumerDirect on 0845 404050, or contacting yourarea Safer Neighbourhood Team on 01473613 500, or visit www.suffolk.police.uk .Remember Lock Stop Chain Check (the foursteps to safety)* Lock - make sure your back door is lockedbefore you go to the front door* Stop - think ‘Are you expecting anyone?’* Chain - secure the door chain beforeopening* Check - ask for and check the caller’sidentity. If you are in doubt, don’t let them in

Did You Know?About half of all bogus callers claim to be from

utility companies such as ‘the water board’.Householders can check an identification cardis genuine by calling Anglian Water onFreephone 0800 145 145 (24 hours).

Tips for dealing with bogus traders* Don’t agree to any work at your doorstep,or let the job start before you have a chanceto change your mind* Does the work really need doing? If so, shoparound and get some quotes and personalrecommendations before going ahead* A good trader/builder is always in demand, does not need to chase work by knocking ondoors and will give you time to consider theestimated price* You have a right to cancel any contractsigned on the doorstep within seven days. Youmust be given a cancellation notice with anywork. If you are not, the contract is void andno one can force you to pay. Sue Burstall Community Safety Unit SCC

Local History Matters: 18Mr SalesHe was Headmaster at the school for 34 years. He was a strict man, maintaining discipline ashe saw fit. He was appointed 12 April 1886.For the first 15 years he made regular claimsfor extra pay for evening classes and annualincreases, usually falling on deaf ears!

One makes notes from the minutes of theGovernors and here are a few examples:25 February 1903 Parent complains oftreatment of child.25 March 1903 Punishment of child consideredexcessive. Head told to be more considerate.28 March 1904 He complains that he and hisstaff are harassed by Managers.14 May 1904 Miss Smith appointed as AssistantTeacher but can only teach infants. Mr Salesnot satisfied so asks for her removal. Miss Smithnot happy and complains of unfair treatment. Not the first time his staff makes that comment! In 1906 he gets a pay rise of £5 a year!22 April 1907 A letter from a parent that MrSales told class ‘If the children did not learntheir bloody scriptures he would half kill them’.Complains on the language, but the Governorssaid the charge was unfounded.

5 October 1911 Some of the best produce inthe school garden has gone missing. Head willkeep a close observation.10 January 1912 Another complaint. Mr Salescanes a boy that both his hands were ‘swollenblack and blue and a piece cut out of hisknuckles and the nail of his thumb was blackfrom the blow’.9 December 1914 Complaint of treatment ofWillie Sheppard and also that children werenot allowed to put on hats when they gooutside the building for drilling.15 December 1914 Managers agree thatexcessive punishment was given to WillieSheppard. Mr Sales instructed to write a letterof apology.15 February 1915 Mr Sales expresses regretand promises to tone down the punishmentsin future.18 December 1915 He is rude to visiting drillinstructress!

I was told by Mrs Battle that once the pupilsstaged a strike by staying outside the schoolin the road. After a while the girls gave in andattended the school. However the boys stayedout and the next day the ringleaders werecaned in front of the school!Mr Sales dies on 15 September 1918.

News from Wenhaston Pre-schoolThis half term the children have been following on from the theme of “how many legs” byexploring their interest in minibeasts. They have been involved in activities ranging from minibeasthunts in the school garden to playing Incy Wincy Spider with drain pipes and toy spiders in thewater tray.

The children have been very busy with WorldBook Day, where each child brought in theirfavourite book. The following week the childrenall turned up to the session on Comic Relief Daywearing red and took part in making red nosebiscuits.

Coming up in the next few weeks before theEaster break the children have the annual EasterEgg Hunt and we hope to squeeze in a visit toMinsmere Nature Reserve.

I had never thought that our president had asadistic streak but when she started ourmeeting by asking us to turn our right foot ina clockwise circle while tracing the numbersix in the air, I began to wonder.

We had a good press coverage for our 90thbirthday party and many letters of thanks. Theembroidery that Jane did for her City andGuilds was on display, a wonderful piece ofwork. If anyone is interested in learning howto do machine embroidery Jane is willing tostart a group.

Have you ever held a Pearly King’s Jacket? Itis unbelievably heavy. Gerry Baxter gave usan informative talk on the origins andtraditions of the Pearly Kings and Queens. In1875, Harry Croft, rat catcher, road sweeperand barrow boy, collected all the mother ofpearl buttons that he swept up and sewedthem on to his suit. He then collected moneyfor charity but he soon found too manypeople needed money so he went to the 28London boroughs and the Pearly Kings andQueens came into being. The titles arehereditary and the name of an individual’sborough is embroidered with buttons on theback of their jacket. Gerry showed us severalexamples of Pearly clothes. A christeninggown with 120 buttons,1,200 buttons on achild’s dress, and 20,000 buttons on his newsuit. Several of us thought that the PearlyFamilies were Cockney but they originatedfrom all over London. Gerry finished his veryamusing talk with a song using rhyming slang.

At our next meeting Val Sulch will talk to usabout the history of gardening. FJJ

Wenhaston GardenersOops, here we go again- more magical thingsafoot. We'd better be careful or we'll get areputation! President Ric was conjured up tosave the day as another speaker fell by thewayside. With his usual aplomb he took usroot upwards through a plant's wonderful, yes, magical, anatomy. He reminded us of thebalance between plants and people, how wemutually benefit each other with the giving andreceiving of carbon dioxide and oxygen.

We should, he said, get up close and personalwith our plants, talk to them, stroke ourseedlings to make them strong, put an ear toa birch tree to hear the sap rising.... I told youwe'd be getting a reputation.

We coven, sorry, convene again on April 14thto hear Graham Proctor of Radio Suffolk onFruit Trees (I hope! ).

A reminder to those going on the June outingto Corpusty Mill, please pay at the Aprilmeeting. Cherry Wilkinson

News from the Bus ShelterI’ve been asked about getting bus passes soit’s worth reminding people that to be eligiblefor a national bus pass from Suffolk Coastalyou must permanently reside in the SuffolkCoastal district and be aged 60 or over(women and men) or have a qualifyingdisability. The bus pass is issued free to alleligible residents who apply. You can applyin person at SCDC’s office, by phone on01394 444647 or visitwww.suffolkcoastal.gov.uk/helpingpeople .

For those of us who are not eligible for a buspass and do regular journeys on the 601 bus,the Ten Trip Ticket is incredibly good value formoney. Buy it on the bus and get 10 trips forthe price of 6!

Mothers’ UnionWhat a treat we had when John Buck, a retiredGamekeeper who worked on a local estate for43 years, came along to share some of hisexperiences. John told us about rearingpheasants, partridge and duck, aboutpredators and how he dealt with them, alsoabout poachers, and how the wildlife on theestate has been affected by climate change, lack of gamekeeping and the consequentincrease in predators. The slides he broughtalong were very interesting and he was warmlythanked by Daphne Francis.
