Occupying Saint John and the World

On September 17, 2011 Occupy Wall Street began. At its beginning this stand and media seems to be dying down. News reporters seem to be tiring of reporting people all saying the same things and people are tired of not knowing exactly what is being protested. So what exactly are they standing for?

They are standing against greed and corruption and social economic inequality and standing for equal opportunity. These are broad topics and may be the reason people think they are standing for nothing. The Occupy movement is pretty much just standing against everything that is wrong in our government and society. So what are the main goals for Occupiers in Saint John?

The main goals for Occupy Saint john are to first, survive the winter. Not only will this prove the dedication and will power of the people but it will show just how serious the citizens of Saint John are about making a change to the system. They are making plans to fundraise to buy food, winter tents and blankets. They are also attempting to get portable toilets electricity and some kind of heat source. The second is to get organized. They are in the process of attempting to open up a bank account to handle all fundraising and donations. Plans of what they will be using the money for are also in progress.

They are attempting to establish a system where ideas must be proposed at the general assembly and voted on by the people. Their last goal is to promote awareness. They are planning on creating an information booth and are currently doing their best to update Facebook groups that are open to the public. They also hold general assembly meetings every Sunday at 6:30 p.m. These meeting are to discuss the plans of future actions, answer questions and listen to the ideas and opinions of the people. Occupy is looking for support of any kind. This includes donating your time, money or just educating people on Occupy’s cause. So get informed, get involved and have your opinion heard.

Celebrate the Joys of Winter!!

Canada is known for its harsh winters, but the snow gives Canada the opportunity to have some very fun and unique festivals! One being the Winterlude festival which is in Ottawa and lasts three weekends in February. Canada’s beloved winter activities are held across Ottawa and Gatineau at this annual event. These activities include the "Worlds Largest Skating Rink" which is on the Rideau Canal where you can skate through down town Ottawa a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The skating rink starts just steps away from Canada’s Parliament Buildings and is 7.8 kilometers long! The Rink has some interesting places to check out during your journey such as the outdoor art gallery that is on the ice in Dows Lake. this event is know as the Dows Gallery which is a place where youth have the opportunity to express themselves through art. Another activity would be the unique Ice Sculptures. This event is held at Confederation Park and is a highlight of Winterlude. Sculptures from around the world come here and make beautiful , breathtaking sculptures out of blocks of ice. They are also displayed at night with stunning lights making them sparkle in the cold dark night. And finally there is North America's Largest snow Playground! The playground features snow slides, snow sculptures, obstacle courses, kick-sleds, horse-drawn sleigh rides, craft lessons and more.

New Years Party!

DecorationDecorations are important in a New Years party, especially if it's themed. Even if it's not themed, decorations are still a fun idea to add color and light to the party. Whether they're just small and subtle or extravagantly done, anything goes for New Years. Banners, lights and confetti are great and easy ideas without going overboard

MusicWhat's a party without music? Boring - that's what. That's why planning music for a New Years party is so important. A good stereo system, karaoke machine or a live DJ are a must have. Have some slower paced, more relaxed tunes on in the background for the beginning of the evening, and as midnight looms closer play more up-beat, dance music to really get the party going. Another good idea is to have a couples dance or dance competition to liven the party.

FoodIf you're having a more up-beat, lively party, it's good to have quick and easy access to snacks and beverages. A table with popcorn, sweets, candy, chips and/or appetizers (along with pop, juice, water and any alcoholic beverages being provided) gives a wide variety and easy accessibility to your refreshments. If the party you're planning is more formal,

something along the lines of a potluck might be a good idea. Everyone can help out by bringing a dish and you can have the food laid out on a table with plates and cutlery for fast get-it-yourself service. Other finger foods might be good to have set out for snacks later in the night.

ThemeAlthough not necessary, it's become a trend to have a theme for your New Years bash. Popular themes include "Hollywood", "Casino Night" or "Retro Theme". As part of the activities, awards could go to the best dressed people.

GamesAgain, not necessary, but it's suggested to include games in your party itinerary. Be sure to include all of your guests to avoid making anyone feel left out. Party games could range from "drinking games" to a variety of other interactive activities. If you pick the right games for your guests, you can keep the highly unwanted boredom at bay and make your New Years get-together an affair to remember.

Yannick Tona

On December 6th, in celebration of Human Rights Day, Hampton High School and the John Peters Humphrey Foundation had the pleasure of welcoming Yannick Tona, a young Rwandan genocide survivor and accomplished motivational speaker. Tona, by sheer miracle, escaped Rwanda with his mother at the young age of four, and now lives in its capital, Kigali, with his younger sister and brother, his mother and his father.

Although he was not capable at the time of knowing what exactly was going on in his country, Tona’s mind is filled with images of the 1994 atrocity. “I didn’t know what was going on, all I knew is that my mother and father loved me.”

After an enlightening history lesson on the Hutus and Tutsis and the development of Rwanda, Tona recapitulated with care the idea that change starts within one person. He brightly motivated the staff and students to make a change, and fight against genocide. “The change starts within each one of us,” as Craig Kielburger, founder of Free The Children, once said.

Yannick Tona is a very passionate speaker, and the listeners could feel that emotion. He paused at all the right moments to allow the reality of the situation sink in. He also allowed a brief question period, and kindly explained his opinions on different topics. He described his feelings toward the Rwandan genocide, and explained that as a young boy, he felt very angry towards his own country. But he realised anger and violence were no ways to live, and took to forgiveness and compassion instead.

Now Yannick Tona travels to tell his story, and has been named Youth Ambassador for Harmony. He motivates people to act against genocide, to promote peace, and most of all, to shape the world we live in. If people can take away one piece of knowledge from his inspiring story, it is Gandhi's impelling words: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

The skies go black And the lighting cracks

Torches flare In a murderous stare

A normal day Or it seemed that way

But a cry went out And killed the doubt

The Tutsi blood Be spilled today

The child ran The mother cried

As father tried To hold the tide

The sharpened steel cuts his flesh So easily so effortless

The moment comes Its time to run Grab the kids Load the gun

Set pace for the eastern sun

Bow your head and say a prayer Send up a signal flare

Its time to march to end the war The suffering

Soon we knock on heavens door

Blood soaked sand An outstretched hand

Bodies stacked miles high All for a cold command

Never hurt the ones you love You’ll have to face them up above

TRADITIONS

Traditions are what shape a person, community and a country. They make a person who they are, that is why it is so important to establish traditions. A very significant tradition has been happening every winter for the last 45 years in Toronto. On Saturday, November 26 at 7pm, Cavalcade of Lights a spectacular tradition returns to Nathan Phillips Square.

These lights feature the city of Toronto's official Christmas tree; there are more than 300,000 energy-efficient LED lights that shine from dusk to 11:00 p.m. every night throughout the holiday season. Also is fire works and music which this year will be played by award-winning artists Jarvis Church, Kelly lee Evans, JRDN, rising star Justin Hines and singer Victoria Duffield. This event used to only last one or two nights and now it is for an entire month!

How to Shred

Hello Seriously? fans… if you even exist, how’s it going? Yeah I know it’s December and there’s no snow! Now some of the more lame readers may enjoy that fact, and for you all I have to say is are you o.k? Come on now what is Christmas without snow? Just another day with a lot of wasted wrapping paper. And besides that fact there is the more pressing issue what was it again? Oh yea I CANT SNOWBOARD! Now I'm sure I'm not the only one that’s craving a good ol' kicker session, or even just a day of bombing hills I'm not picky. Now for those of you that don’t share my pain I can only assume its because you have never tried this glorious sport and that sir should be a sin (I've called the pope to request it be added to the list be he is one hard dude to get a hold of.) so I thought sense I cant provide the bio. on the local riders like I had planned on, ill do the next best thing provide some tips for the beginner in hopes of attracting some more riders.

Ok the first one is. Figure out what stance you are, there are two goofy and regular. You know a goofy rider because they will ride most comfortably with their right foot forward. A regular rider is the opposite preferring left foot forward. This should be your main priority your first time out (well along with standing and not falling every five seconds.) don’t worry it will be pretty clear which stance you prefer.

The next tip is. Set up your bindings with the same angle on each foot (most beginners only angle their front foot) doing this is called riding “duck foot”. There are a couple advantages to doing this. The first is more control riding this way allows you to use your back foot more effectively allowing for tighter turns. Another advantage is riding switch if you have the same angle on each foot riding in your opposite stance is way easier because your already use to the angle. Last but not least is spinning. Riding “duck foot” makes doing spin tricks (360 540 720 etc....) way more fluent and natural. Trust me once you go duck you’ll never go back.

My last tip is make like Nike and JUST DO IT! You’re landing on snow and most of the time your forward momentum will absorb most of the impact. Doing tricks is all about your mind set if you think you can do it you have way better chance of actually doing it. Snowboarding is 70% commitment and 30% skill so bust out that ring and marry that board you’ll be glad you did.

So I hope these types help out some of the green horns out there and remember. Rome wasn’t built in a day keep at it and you’ll get it. See you on the slopes boys!

Page 13: Seriously? Issue 3

As the cold front moves in on the northern hemisphere, leaving us cold, dark and roughly without hope, The Black Keys deliver the perfect remedy for your winter blues: El Camino. The enduring blues-tinged rock duo kind of lost their edge with last year’s release of Brothers, and added a more soulful groove [which bagged them three Grammy’s]. But now Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney are back, and have revived their vintage rock n roll vibes. The pair teamed up with producer Brain “Danger Mouse” Burton for the entire ride, and delivered nothing less than perfection. From the first note of “Lonely Boy”, straight through to the last bar of “Mind Eraser”, El Camino is sheer excellence. The record kicks off with the shimmy-inducing single “Lonely Boy”, showing a new force from the duo, not heard since their 2008 Attack and Release. Tunes like “Dead and Gone” and “Gold On The Ceiling” are heavier on distortion and bare resemblance to their raucous Magic Potion sound; laced with dismal guitar work and overlaid vocal tracks, ready to knock you down flat in two seconds. The number one track of the album for me has to go to “Little Black Submarines”. What starts as a remarkable acoustic

guitar ballad complete with Auerbach’s unfiltered voice explodes into a raging mass of classic rock psychedelia: a modern Stairway to Heaven. “Sister” pumps out a thick beat, while you can practically hear Carney’s kit wailing during “Stop Stop” as he beats the almighty daylights out of it; perfect to back up golden vocals. Songs like “Money Maker” and “Run Right Back” are a comeback for the fuzzy guitar and stuttering beat that made the pair so attractive, with Auerbach howling “She’s the worst thing I’ve been addicted to” to accompany one of the most ear-catching, electrifying guitar riffs of the album, while a surprising reggae vibes creep up on “Hell of a Season”. Like Brothers, the second half of the album evokes a mellower vibe, with “Nova Baby” lamenting a hopeless love, and eventually ending on a high note with “Mind Eraser” enlivening their bluesy side. The core of El Camino’s beauty could lie in its 60’s garage charm, or rock psychedelic feel. It could lie in the lyrics Dan Auerbach moans, or the beats Patrick Carney ejects from his kit. But it’s most likely the magical combination of all of thee above that makes these rich 37 minutes pure acme; the perfect cure for your Winter blues. Best served hot. Serving size: 2.
