NJ.com, the online version of The Newark Star-Ledger, The Jersey Journal, and other papers in the state, is conducting an ongoing comments/poll on the subject of pending legislation -- A3328 -- in the state Legislature that would allow physician-assisted suicide in NJ.

It is important to add our voices to this debate, and we urge all parishioners to comment in this poll about the need to defeat this bill and reaffirm the dignity of all human life at all stages. The Catholic Perspective: Advance Directives for Health Care Form - Documents which provide guidance when a person is no longer able to make health care decisions are called “advance directives.” It is recommended that those completing an advance directive also appoint a health care representative who is someone who is trusted and authorized to evaluate what the patient would want and to make those health care decisions. The Catechism of the Catholic Church provides clear guidance on end of life issues. The New Jersey Catholic Conference (NJCC) of Bishops has an Advance Directives for Health Care form which reflects the Catholic perspective. A copy can also be downloaded from the diocesan website - http://diometuchen.org/offices-and-ministries/pastoral-life/respect-for-life/physician-assisted-suicide/ (scroll down to Catholic Advance Directive for Health Care (Living Wills) / Advanced Directive for Health Care Flyer: English) - or the NJCC website: www.njcathconf.com. These forms are also available in Spanish.

A Catholic Guide to End-of-Life Decisions is a resource made available by the National Catholic Bioethics Center. This document provides a clear explanation of the Church’s teaching on end-of-life care, including advance directives and physician assisted suicide. Individual copies of this guide can be ordered online at www.ncbcenter.org.

O R E G O N ’ S D O C T O R - P R E S C R I B E D S U I C I D E L AW How well is it REALLY working?

“Death with Dignity” supporters in New Jersey would like to convince us that doctor-prescribed suicide is safe from abuses or exploitations because it is supposedly going well in Oregon. But, consider the following: • In commenting on the reported data, the Oregon

Health Division says on its web site, “The Oregon Health Division is charged with collecting information under the Death With Dignity Act but also obligated to report any cases of noncompliance with the law to the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners. Our responsibility to report noncompliance makes it difficult, if not impossible, to detect accurately and comment on under reporting.

We cannot determine whether physician-assisted suicide is being practiced outside the framework of the Death With Dignity Act.”

• The Oregon Health Division can only report data that is reported voluntarily to them. They have no authority or resources to look for abuses. The reports originate from physicians who have written the lethal prescriptions; they are not likely to report cases that do not comply with the law or do not go well.

Seekers' Retreat Weekend October 11 -13

Calling all young adults in their 20s and 30s to participate in a NEW offering at Loyola House of Retreats in Morristown. Participants will be invited to look at their lives to see where God has been, where God is present, and where God is calling them to be and to help answer:

• What’s important in my life? • What am I looking for? • Where does God fit in?

You’re not alone. Find out how other young adults answer these questions; learn how faith plays a role in their journeys; and take the time to reflect on your own path. So if you’re a young adult and have too much going on, or are being pulled in a million directions, please consider pausing for a weekend to take a look at the big picture.
