BY THE WAY . . .

During this time of sheltering in place, Saint Anthony’s offers Holy Mass, livestreamed, every morning at 10:30 A.M. (This coming Sunday marks the 70th day we have been livestreaming since Saint Patrick’s Day). I am grateful for the many people who join us each morning, and for the many positive comments we have received from our parishioners, and those around the country and abroad who choose to join us each morning, as well as those who pray with us later in the day through various media platforms. On Tuesday mornings at the conclusion of Mass, we offer the prayers of the Saint Anthony Novena. Our parish has been praying this Novena on the nine Tuesdays before the June 13 Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua for many years now, and we are happy to continue that custom through our livestream capacity. The Novena prayers may be accessed through our parish web site.

In anticipation of the arrival of our new bishop, Bishop Kevin Sweeney, Father Ray has been offering a series on Wednesday evenings on the Bishops of Paterson. This week we will look at the life and times of the fourth Bishop of Paterson, Most Rev. Lawrence B. Casey (1966-1977). Join us livestreamed from the church at 7:30 P.M. on Wednesday evening. Episcopo nostro Coemgeno (that is Latin for “Kevin, our bishop”) – Bishop-elect Kevin J. Sweeney will be ordained and installed as the Eighth Bishop of Paterson on Wednesday, July 1 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Paterson. The ordaining prelate will be Joseph Cardinal Tobin, C.Ss.R., the Metropolitan Archbishop of Newark, and the co-consecrators will be Bishop Emeritus Arthur Serratelli of Paterson and Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of Brooklyn. The Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, will be present and is actually presiding at a “bishop trifecta” in the area over three days: the ordination of Auxiliary Bishop Luis Miguel Romero, M.Id. in Rockville Centre, Long Island on June 29, the ordinations of Auxiliary Bishops Gregory Studerus, Elias Lorenzo, O.S.B., and Michael Saporito in Newark on June 30, and the ordination of Bishop Sweeney in Paterson on July 1. This will mark the second time a bishop has been ordained in our cathedral – the first was former Bishop Frank J. Rodimer in 1978. It will be the first time a Bishop of Paterson has had a hand in ordaining his successor – although the first bishop, Thomas McLaughlin, preached at the episcopal ordination of his successor, Bishop Thomas Boland, in 1940. The working presumption of the planning committee is that New Jersey churches will be operating on a “25% capacity” protocol by that point, so that will probably limit attendance to no more than 225 people. The event will be live streamed on the diocesan website. At a later date, possibly in November, a larger event will be held to welcome the bishop to the diocese.

Reopening the Church – This past week the Archdiocese of Newark (but not the Diocese of Paterson) gave a hesitant go-ahead to begin Phase I of what is projected as a three-phase program of reopening churches. The first phase, as the archdiocese projects it, is reopening the churches for a few hours each day for private prayer and Confessions (but not in the Confessional). One of our neighbors, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Ridgewood is opening this week under these protocols. Several of our archdiocesan neighbors (Franklin Lakes, Ho-ho-kus, Saddle River) decided not to reopen because the guidelines are so complicated and difficult to implement. I would encourage you to look at Mount Carmel’s website and read the instructions about opening the church, just to give yourself an idea of what may be in store for us down the road. It is hard to keep track of all the events and happenings which have been cancelled, postponed, delayed and re-invented due to the Covid19 Pandemic. One of the many events is the Saint Anthony’s School Tricky Tray originally scheduled for April 1 and then rescheduled for May 21. But, Tricky Tray Committees (not to mention attendees) are tough – no mere pandemic is going to put them down! In lieu of the Tricky Tray, Saint Anthony’s Home and School Association is sponsoring a Virtual Auction from 8:00 AM on May 27 through 9:00 PM on May 29. Join us from the comfort (or not) of your home to bid on a huge selection of fabulous items, including gift certificates, designer handbags, hot electronics, family fun opportunities and more! For complete details, check out the flier attached to this bulletin.

Divine Mercy devotees will be excited by the decision of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, this morning (Monday), to add the liturgical remembrance of the Divine Mercy visionary, Saint Faustina Kowalska, to the Church’s universal liturgical calendar. This means that Saint Faustina may be celebrated as an Optional Memorial on October 5 in all the churches of the world Unwanted religious articles – There are reports that sales at hardware store and home gardening centers have spiked during “sheltering in place.” Apparently, many Americans are using the time to clean, repair, reconstruct, and generally upgrade their properties. This trend makes me nervous that when the church reopens, I am going to be “gifted” with bags of broken statues, rosaries, etc. that have become part of the general cleaning, but that people feel squeamish about discarding. In light of that I offer the following “protocol” for discarding unwanted religious articles that comes from Father Robert Szusko, the Vice Rector of Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University. Take the unwanted or broken items and place them in a bag. Then take a hammer and smash the bag repeatedly until the enclosed items no longer bear any resemblance to any religious entity. Then throw the bag away.

This past Saturday I had my first (I think) Covid19 Anointing. The guidelines from the Diocese suggest we wear latex gloves, do not actually touch the patient, bring a small swab of cotton and dip that into the Oil of the Sick and anoint the person on the forehead only with the oil-soaked cotton which should then be burnt. That was just the beginning. I was called to anoint a 92-year-old at Van Dyke Park Place. When I arrived they brought me to the ward, gave me gloves, and then a plastic surgical gown. Then I had to don two different face masks as well as a face visor. (I will say I was impressed with Van Dyke Park Place and their staff). By the time I got to the bedside, it was getting hot under all that protection. Reciting the prayers under three layers of mask made me feel as if I was in an echo chamber, since only I could really hear myself. As my visor was fogging up I was beginning to feel disoriented. When it was over I was spritzed with sanitizer. I only had to endure those discomforts for 15-20 minutes. I can only imagine what it is like for doctors, nurses, and staff who go through that for hours at a time. Many of us are getting tired of sheltering in place, distancing, and, especially, wearing masks, particularly as the weather turns nicer. If we are not right in the thick of the issue, it may seem to some of us “too much,” “enough already”, or “I’m done with this”. But I would encourage everyone to think twice and be patient. The men and women on the front lines of this struggle very much deserve the support of all our cooperation. This Monday, May 25 is Memorial Day a day when we honor the memory of those who have given their lives in service to their country. Many of the typical ways we observe Memorial Day – parades, wreath layings, municipal commemorations, family picnics – are not available to us this year. But we can still observe the essence of the holiday. There are an awful lot of Jersey men and women who have been killed in the line of duty since the first Jersey Blues Regiment was raised on October 9, 1775 to fight in the War for Independence. Remember to say a prayer for them. Beginning this Sunday, the Solemnity of the Ascension, Bishop Serratelli has asked that we pray the following prayer for Bishop-elect Kevin Sweeney until his ordination and installation on July 1.

Good and gracious God We stand at the threshold of a new time for our diocese. As we cross that threshold in thankfulness, we ask you to pour out an abundance of grace on our Bishop-elect Kevin Sweeney, that he may faithfully assume his ministry among us, and that, together with him, we may work for the building up of our local Church. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Keep safe and healthy, God bless you all, Father Ray
