ANNOUNCEMENTS

22 DECEMBER 2019 3 FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

The Musings of Our Pastor

It is already time to light the 4th candle on the Advent Wreath, which might be adorning your family meal table, especially in an effort to integrate faith and religious prac-tices more fully into one's home and family life. If you have been digesting this column each of the previous weeks of Advent, you are aware that I have suggested giving each of the Advent candles a label or title for the purpose of giv-ing our reflection and prayer a specific focus as we journey through Advent to the celebration of Christmas it-self. "Welcoming Presence" is an apt description or title, which we might affix to the last candle of the Advent Wreath, especially as we eagerly await the joyous celebra-tion of the Birth of Christ in a few days. "Welcoming Presence" is a concept that beckons us to ponder carefully just how we are approaching this most sacred and glorious Feast of the Incarnation, the mystery of "God-with-us" in the flesh of our own human nature. Take "Christ" out of Christmas, and it becomes pretty mud-dled as to what is really being celebrated on December 25th! It is a religious celebration of faith shared with tidings of great joy by Christians throughout the world. How dis-maying it is, though, to see how all of the worldly, material-istic, commercial or secular vibes regarding Christmas may so distract even faithful Christians that they may actu-ally fail to welcome the "Presence of Jesus" among us with suitable prayerfulness, with suitable loving devotion, with suitable joy at Christmas! On that "Most Holy Night", the Bible tells of angels and shepherds, who greeted the "Presence of Jesus" lying in the manger of Bethlehem with awe and wonder, with jubilation, and with a humble sense of "welcome". Of course, this "welcoming" spirit toward the "Presence of Jesus" with and among us is not just a funda-mental ingredient of faith to be at work in our lives at Christmas, it ought to be characteristic of our faith and de-votion for Christ at all times. Unfortunately, that is not al-ways the case! You might light the 4th candle on your Ad-vent Wreath and share this brief prayer before enjoying your family meal together. (Leader): O Jesus, Emmanuel, you are "God-with-us", the eternal fountain of wisdom, love and life for all humani-ty. (All): We choose to open the doors of hearts and our homes to welcome your saving presence with eager-ness and with joy. (Leader): O Jesus, Emmanuel, "God-with-us", you seek to bring healing, peace and hope to our world darkened by sin and hurt. (All): We choose to open ourselves to your loving presence each day, and to spread your peace by the love and respect we show to others. (All): Our Father May you and your families have a most Blessed Christ-mas, as well as a peaceful, healthy and prosperous New Year. You are in my prayers often. God bless you. —Fr. Ken

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Zach Fullenkamp, who

were married this weekend.

IN OUR PRAYERS The condolences of Holy Trinity Parish are extended to the family of Bob Schmit in light of his recent death. May he look upon the face of Christ and enjoy the gift of Eternal Peace in Heaven. May his spirit of humble and generous
