Oh, by the way…
Something new liturgically!
UNITED STATES CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS
(USCCB)
DECREE OF PUBLICATION
In accord with the norms established by decree of the Sacred
Congregation of Rites in Cum, nostra ætate (January 27, 1966) and of the
Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in
Liturgiam Authenticam (March 28, 2001), this edition of the Order of
Celebrating Matrimony is declared to be the vernacular typical edition of
the Ordo Celebrandi Matrimonium, editio typica altera, and is published
by authority of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
The Order of Celebrating Matrimony was canonically approved by the United States Conference
of Catholic Bishops on November 12, 2013, and was subsequently confirmed by the Apostolic See by
decree of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments on June 29, 2015
(Prot. n. 84/14).
The Order of Celebrating Matrimony may be used in the Liturgy as of September 8, 2016, the
Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and its use is obligatory as of December 30, 2016,
the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. From that date forward, no other English
edition of the Order of Celebrating Matrimony may be used in the dioceses of the United States of
America.
Given at the General Secretariat of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops,
Washington, DC, on February 2, 2016, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.
†Joseph E. Kurtz Reverend Monsignor J. Brian Bransfield
Archbishop of Louisville General Secretary
President, USCCB
With the recent wedding on 3 June (and three [3] coming down the pike), I needed to re-
immerse myself into the new Order of Celebrating Matrimony. A workshop was presented in our
Local Church on the new Order in the fall of 2016 (slept since then). One of the major reminders for
the clergy (and something new to practically all Catholics) is that the celebration of Marriage has never
been a personal celebration, i.e. ‘This is MY wedding’. Rather, the celebration needs to be seen in the
context of the whole (Universal and Local) Church. The Wentz-Foerg wedding was my first
opportunity to celebrate the new Order of Celebrating Matrimony in our Cluster. (The Order proper
had many post-it notes for the various prayers.) Same yet different: What is permitted; what is not
permitted. Specific dates when a marriage MAY NOT be celebrated. A great blessing is some of
options: Blessings and Giving of the Arras1
and the Blessing and
Placing of the Lazo2.
If you attend a Hispanic wedding, you will see some of
their adaptations. The couple will give each other the coins or
arras as they express to each other the commitment to care for the
home and to provide for the family. 1The Hispanic culture gives us the tradition of wedding
coins, arras. After the blessing and exchange of rings, the priest

or deacon blesses a set of wedding coins. The groom then gives the coins to his new wife as he
pledges to care for her and the home they will build together. The bride receives the coins and
commits herself to working with her new husband to use the gifts they have to care for all in need.
This custom developed from the tradition of giving an arrabon, a Greek word for “pledge.” In
essence, this was the “dowry” that represented the groom’s commitment and ability to care for the
material needs of the home. This tradition found its way into wedding ceremonies so that today we
see Spanish wedding coins and Mexican weddings coins integrated into a wedding ceremony.
Today, many couples depend on two incomes in order to manage their financial needs. So
the words that accompany the giving and receiving of the arras can express this contemporary
reality as well as communicate the sacrifice that each of them will make for the other.
If the words used are crafted well, they can also express their new sacramental role in the
community. As a couple, they are now a new sign of God’s love to the world, especially for those in
need. The arras can represent the couple’s sacrifice not just for each other but also for those who
come to them seeking their care and kindness. 2The Lazo symbolizes the new union through the Sacrament
of Holy Matrimony. It is usually incorporated after the marriage rite.
The Maid of Honor and the Best Man (padrinos) will place a double
looped rosary on the couple’s shoulders. The priest then proceeds
to say a prayer inviting the couple to reflect on, and to follow, the
example of the Holy Family. If the veil adaptation is included, then
the bottom of the veil is extended to cover the groom’s shoulders
and the veil is held by the Lazo. The Veil the bride wears symbolizes
chastity, and extending the veil over the groom’s shoulders
represents the common call for a chaste and pure marriage.
Inserted this week-end is a Q&A for the Order of Celebrating Matrimony.
While this in no way answers ALL the questions a couple may have, those
questions will be explored when a couple plans their marriage.
Sometimes an event happens which gives more hope for all the efforts of Religious Education
and Gospel values. Jonathan Ottow works at Sanders. When items are close to expiration, they are
discarded. He noticed that bread (20+ racks of bread & buns) was relegated to the dumpster. Rather
than waste, he asked the owners if he could have the bread for a food pantry. Jonathan asked a few
more questions of the Cluster Office. For the past two (2) week-ends, the bread had been delivered to
the Pulaski County Food Pantry…and that didn’t work. Because of timing, there was a need to
distribute the bread last week-end. Bread was delivered to St. Joseph Saturday then St. Francis and St.
Peter Sunday morning. One blessing that has come from this is the discovery of other Food Pantries in
the County that will be served. If there is ever an overabundance of bread which is undeliverable, the
bread will be distributed in the Cluster churches. (Please keep in mind that the bread is perishable. It
needs to be distributed as soon as possible. Thank you)

JUST FOR FUN! When my son was two and a half, I had sent him to clean his room but each time he went in, he got distracted by all the toys and nothing got put away. Following some principals I had learned at a recent prayer conference I went in and said to him, "Stephen, what did mommy tell you to do?" "Clean my room" "And did you clean your room?" "No." he replied quietly. I disciplined him and then helped him to pray and confess his error to God and ask Jesus to help him get his room cleaned. He seemed to respond really well to all of this and I thought, "Wow, this stuff really works." But Stephen just got down and sat in the middle of the mess, doing nothing. In frustration I asked, "Stephen, what are you doing?' He replied, just as frustrated, "I'm waiting for Jesus to come and help me clean my room!"
