JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The grounded Japanese ship that leaked tons of oil near protected areas off the Indian Ocean island nation of Mauritius has split apart, officials said Saturday, with remaining fuel spreading into the turquoise waters.
Photos posted on social media by the official cleanup effort with sup-port of the environment ministry show the ship in two pieces, “and the tug-boats are already at work.” Oil barriers were in place and a skimmer ship was nearby.
Most if not all the remaining 3,000 tons of fuel had been pumped off the ship in the past week as environmental groups warned that the damage to coral reefs and once-pristine coastal areas could be irreversible.
The MV Wakashio struck a reef on July 25 and its hull began to crack after days of pounding waves. Some 1,000 tons of fuel began to leak on Aug. 6.
The Mauritius govern-ment is under pressure to explain why immediate action wasn’t taken to empty the ship of its fuel. Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth earlier blamed bad weather for the slow response.
Owner Nagashiki Ship-ping has said “residual” amounts of fuel remained on the ship after pump-ing. It is investigating why the ship went off course. The ship was meant to stay at least 10 miles from shore. The company has sent experts to help in cleaning up the damage.
The Mauritius govern-ment is seeking compen-sation from the company.
After the government declared an environmen-tal emergency, thousands of volunteers rushed to the shore to create make-shift oil barriers from tunnels of fabric stuffed with sugar cane leaves and even human hair, with empty soda bottles tucked in to keep them afloat.

One hundred years ago this month, women in the United States were guaranteed the right to vote with ratification of the 19th Amendment — secured by a 24-year-old Tennessee legisla-tor’s decisive vote, cast at the bidding of his mother.
Harry T. Burn’s surprise move set the stage for decades of slow but steady advances for Ameri-
can women in electoral politics. Two years ago, a record number of women were elected to Con-gress. On Tuesday, Democratic former Vice President Joe Biden selected Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate — making her the first Black woman on a major party’s presidential ticket.
Burns, from the small town of Niota in eastern Tennessee, joined the Legislature in 1918 as its youngest member. The fol-lowing year, Congress approved
the 19th Amendment, touching off the battle to win ratification by the legislatures of 36 of the 48 states.
The process moved quickly at first: By March 1920, 35 states had ratified, while eight states, mostly Southern, had rejected the amendment. Of the states yet to vote, Tennessee was the only one where ratification was considered possible under pre-vailing political conditions.
So all eyes turned to its Legis-
lature, where lawmakers had the power to grant the women’s suf-frage movement a victory it had sought for more than 70 years or deal it a painful setback.
At that time, women in more than half the states could vote in presidential elections. But they had no statewide voting rights throughout the South and sev-eral other states.
Thousands of activists on both sides of the debate poured into Nashville ahead of the spe-
cial session. The posh Hermit-age Hotel became a hotbed of lobbying and political gossip.
The amendment was approved 25-4 in the state Senate and sent to the House, where sentiment was divided as its turn to vote came on Aug. 18, 1920.
Anti-suffragists believed they had the votes needed to table the amendment, but that failed in a 48-48 tie. Burn was among those supporting the motion to table.
