Hello,- I'm Martina Rossi, I work as a SERVICE DESIGNER and RESEARCHER in Politecnico di Milano within the Design Department, inside a research unit called POLIMI DESIS LAB.- Talk about a project that we are running, that started in 2015 and lasts 2 years. I will focus in particular on how service design tools and co-design can change the way citizens are engaged to participate in policy making.1

CIMULACTthe project in a nutshellCIMULACT - Citizen and Multi-Actor Consultation on Horizon 2020 engages citizens, along with experts, policy makers, researchers, ventures, designers, futurists and technical developers, in redefining the European research and innovation agenda and thereby make it relevant and accountable to society.

Yes, it is a visionary project!

@DESISpolimi@CIMULACT

- what is the European research agenda? It is a list of research topics (or programmes) on which european researchers needs to investigate, in order of priority and with a specific budget according to the ranking.- this decision was top-down before CIMULACT, with CIMULACT the EC wanted the citizens to decide what were the most important topics for doing research.7

- 100 people- Multi stakeholder- different roles: citizens to witness, experts to filter the information with their expertise on the field and translating the content in the scientific language- experts are updated on the state of the art in scientific research17

@DESISpolimi@CIMULACT

- addresses more balanced models between personal and professional life- need of giving more tools for citizens' participation- teaching problem-solving skills to people- make big cities smarter and human-scaled- civic responsability and education among citizens

Final Considerations

Final considerationCo-design methods and tools can support people in stimulating not only idea generation, but also the development and transformation of scenarios into something more conceptual, such as research directions or recommendations. By making scenarios and research challenges more concrete, linking them to everyday life problems and by asking expert designers to imagine solutions to those problems, design thinking has helped to ground the challenges to the reality.making tools are no longer useful at the end of the design process, once the ideas are defined, but they are potentially useful throughout the phases.

@DESISpolimi@CIMULACT

Expert designers can be the actors that help the contribution of people, making it concrete and tangible.Final considerationThese tangible elements support a discussionDesign for democracy? Design as a way of engaging citizens
