1.- CAFÉ DEL NORTE: WHO ARE WE?

El Café del Norte… Valladolid´s Coffee!

Inaugurated in 1861 and completely remodeled between 2010 and 2011, it is the mostantique and emblematic hostelry establishment, with 156 years of life, and also one of themost antique in Spain.

Along with its inaguration, El Norte de Castilla-Dean of the spanish newspaper-published onJuly 10, 1861 the following news:

“New Café

We asume that our appreciable readers have seen the new and elegant cafe that hasopened on Calle de Santiago with the name of Café del Norte. The night of theinauguration we were honored to attend and were very pleased with the service andalso with the genres that we drank. If it continues this way we expect good results, asthese types of establishments have increased, the population gives a higher importanceto them, and therefor comes the need for everything to grow.¨

Therefore, it is an establishment with a great historic PAST, but modern in the PRESENT.

Owners

The establishment was initially run by the Gómez-Sigler family (1861 - 1940), and Mr. Faustino Ruiz joined in theyear 1940, and then moved on to the second phase to Mr. Aureliano Castro Castro and his children Fernandoand Juan Antonio Castro Fernández (1940 - 2008).

History and activities

1861. Mr. José Gómez y Mrs. Juana Sigler open a new café on Calle Santiago nº 5, with the name of CAFÉ DELNORTE. The name is explained by the Cantabrian origin of the Siglers.

1875. The café is expanded with the acquisition of nº 27 in Acera de San Francisco, today Plaza Mayor nº 11.Café del Norte also has a bar license, and a license to create sodas, with the Apple soda being its most famous.The recipe was lost with the exit of the last employee who made it.

1875/1900. The cafe is remodeld in various ocassions with pictorial decorations from the Valencian paintorMartí y Monsó, and the Levantine Ramón Micó.

1894. In the café is the first cyclist assembly of Valladolid (presided by Jorge María Ledesma and with NarcisoAlonso Cortés as vice-president) they wrote the first regulation for the use of the bicycles in Valladolid.

1905. Mr. José Gómez passes away, leaving the establishment in the hands of his children José, Micaela,Leopoldo, Carmen, Laurentino and Vicente.

1940. The Gómez-Sigler family associates with Mr. Faustino Ruiz Pérez.

1940. Mr. Aureliano Castro takes charge of the Cafe, later helped by his children Mr. Fernando y Mr. JuanAntonio Castro.

1945. The Hall of the street of Santiago becomes the social headquarters of the Real Valladolid for free.

1920/1970. Café del Norte becomes a performance café with performances in the interior and exterior of thepremises, masterfully recreated in several works by Francisco Umbra, a regular client of the establishment.

1940/2008. Mr. Aureliano Castro as head of Café del Norte was able to accede to the presidency of theProvincial Hostelry trade unión of Valladolid (1954/1975), Councillor (1961/1965) and deputy mayor ofValladolid (1970/1974), receiving in recognition the medal to the tourist merit in its category of Bronze (1969),the distinction to the Merit Union in its category of Medal of First Class (1969) and the silver medal to the meritin the Hostelry Industry (1973).

1957. The premises on Calle Santiago nº 5 are closed, maintaining the one in Plaza Mayor nº 11.

1986. It is the 125th anniversary of Café del Norte and it is awarded, amoung other recognitions, the Silvermedal of the city of Valladolid, as well as is first conmemorative plaque of “Centenary Company” of theChamber of Commerce of Valladolid.

1988/2010. Café del Norte has been the stage to diverse movies, shorts and television series. Mentioned areMonseñor Quijote, staring Sir Alec Guinnessa monografic short about Café del Norte and the movie ¨Anyonecan have a good day¨, both directed by the filmmaker, artist and writer Santiago Lorenzo and a comercial aboutthe fiftieth edition of the Seminci of Valladolid, directed by Isabel Coixet.

2005/2008. Mr. Fernando and Mr. Aureliano Castro pass away, respectively. At the time of Mr. Aureliano´sdeath, his grandchildren Mr. Fernando, Mr. Francisco and Mr. Carlos Castro Sinde take charge of theestablishment.

Past recognitions

We are honored to have received different historic awards and distinctions:

1. Gold and Silver medals in the exhibitions in París, Chicago, Ámsterdam, Madrid, Barcelona andValladolid (1861-1906).

2. Trophy of Kindness of the Voice of Valladolid, granted by Rem f1 to the Café del Norte (1962).

3. Silver medal of the city of Valladolid (1986).

4. Silver plaque of the Official Camera of Commerce as Centenary Company (1986).

5. Partner Protector of Honor of the Holy Week Vallisoletana (1952/2013).

6. Associate of the Provincial Association of Entrepreneurs of Hostelry of Valladolid (1983/2013).

Owners

Nowadays Café del Norte is owned by Mr. Fernando, Mr. Francisco and Mr. Carlos Castro Sinde, grandchildren ofMr. Aureliano Castro and children of Fernando Castro, representing the third family generation in its direction.

History and activities

After the vast remodel between 2010 and 2011 directed by the arquitect Mr. Miguel Ángel Fonseca Aparicio,the establishment offers its public three lines of business within the same space: Cafeteria, Restaurant and“Cientocincuenta Members Lounge” (an innovative Lounge-Bar concept that has an outdoor patio).

Café del Norte of the 21st century has been designed as a versatile space to provide better service and meetthe needs of of clients and welcome in our events, trying to manage it in a modern and profesional way, butwithout forgetting its roots and history. As a result, we have a new manager who has prestigious recognition inValladolid, Mr. Lauro Martínez Fernández.

The CAFETERIA is open every day of the week and has a wide variety of breakfast, appetizers, tapas and portions.

The RESTAURANT is open every day of the week and has various rooms (Fernando Room, Mirador Room, Plaza Mayor Terrace and the 19th century Cellar) where our guests can taste our gastronomic proposals of Castilian style, based on the quality of the raw materials used,

and an extensive wine list of the Province of Valladolid.

Present recognitionsIn November 2011, the establishment received its second Silver Plaque of the Official Chamber of Commerceand Industry of Valladolid as a centenary Company, in March 2012 the Castro Sinde brothers received the awardof Best Young Entrepreneurs of Valladolid 2011, and in October 2013 Café del Norte received the Award to the“Hostelry Company” of the National Hostelry Awards FEHR 2013.

In front of the Café del Norte are the brothers Castro Sinde (Fernando, Francisco and Carlos), representing the thirdfamily generation in the property of the same.

Café del Norte currently has a staff of 20 hostelry professionals among management, kitchen, restaurant andcafeteria staff and office support services.
