Web Apps That Can

Save Your Life

Can a good “app,” or web application you use on your computer,

smart phone, or iPad really save your life? Sounds far fetched until

you read what these apps can do to help you live better, longer and

stronger.

iTriage: This app helps you search for treatments and causes

related to your symptoms. It also can store your health

records and guide you to medical facilities in an emergency.

Go to www.itriagehealth.com and then click on Mobile

Apps.

Pocket First Aid & CPR: With both text and video, this app

walks you through the steps to take when someone is in crisis.

You’ll see what to do for things like bites, bleeding, bruises,

burns or even if the individual has stopped breathing. Type in

Pocket First Aid & CPR at www.heart.org.

Melanoma Self-Exams: Use the app at www.melapp.net to

take a picture of a questionable skin lesion. Within seconds

after tapping on “Check Risk,” the app will provide you with a

risk analysis.

Quit Smoking: Download an app called MyQuit Coach

from www.livestrong.com and quickly be on the path to

becoming a non-smoker. This program creates a personalized

plan to help you set goals, track your progress, and connect to

others who want to quit.

Brain Trainer: Neuroscientists have designed games to keep

your cognitive performance sharp, improve your mood, and

enhance your memory. A good one is called “Brain Trainer”

by www.Lumosity.com on iTunes. This can help prepare

you to think quickly in an emergency to save your life, or

someone else’s life.

The idea of a special day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother's Day celebrations and planned a day to honor

fathers early in the 20th century. The first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane,

Washington on June 19, 1910. Father’s Day has become increasingly popular throughout North America and other parts of the world over the

years.

DID YOU KNOW? 1. George Washington, the celebrated

Father of Unites States of America, had no children of his own. Researchers believe that childhood illnesses may have rendered him sterile. He did adopt the two children from Martha Custis' first marriage

2. In the underwater world of the seahorse, it's the male that gets to carry the eggs and birth the babies.

3. The Stevie Wonder song "Isn't She Lovely" is about his newborn daughter, Aisha. If you listen closely, you can hear Aisha crying during the song.

4. Roses are the official flower for Father's Day. A red rose is worn in the lapel if your father is living, a white rose if he is deceased.

Any man can be a father, but it takes someone

special to be a dad.” --Anne Geddes

Enjoy your day!

The Less You Need, the

More You Have

The biggest mistake I’ve made in my adult life was convincing

myself that I needed a lot of things.

I convinced myself I needed the latest and greatest cell phone.

I convinced myself I needed to eat out regularly.

I convinced myself I needed new shoes all the time.

I convinced myself I needed nice clothes.

I convinced myself I needed anything beyond a minimal roof over

my head, minimal clothes on my back, water, and food.

Really, in the end, that’s all I need. Water, basic food, basic

clothing, and a roof to keep the rain and cold away for myself and

my family. Everything else beyond that is want.

When I finally realized that the things I actually needed were

incredibly minimal, I began to see how amazingly abundant my life

was. I had friends. I had a husband that loved me. I had reasonably

good health. I had wonderful children. I had a good sense of humor.

I had a solid work ethic. I had the ability to entertain myself. On top

of that, I had a staggering abundance of material things, from

decent clothes on my back to a decent used car in the driveway.

With all of this wealth in my life, why do I need more? Why do I

want more?

After some reflection, I think I would go even further than the

above statement. Simply put, the abundance mentality finds value

in what one already has, while ths scarcity mentality is always

seeking more. The more I look at my own life, the more I realize

that I don’t need very much at all. Then, when I look at all of the

things I do have, I’m stunned by all that I have in my life and I

don’t really feel a need to have any more. In fact, if anything, I feel

like having more would be almost overwhelming.

Some people see that statement as some sort of deprivation. There

is always more out there. Why not acquire it? My feeling is that

instead of just acquiring more, lately, I’m driven to maximize all of

the relationships, possessions, and other things my life already has

going for it. People. Things. Places. Memories. Ideas. Experiences.

Step back and look at your life. Remove just what you need from

that picture – water, basic food, a few changes of basic clothing,

minimal shelter. Look at all that’s left – all of the possessions,

relationships, experiences, thoughts, and other things. That’s an

abundance, one that can provide you with more than you can ever

explore and enjoy.

Secretly Do Yoga At Work A crazy day at the office may make you wish you

were at your favorite yoga studio.

Take some time to try this “Do Nothing Posture”…

1. Find a straight-backed chair in the quietest place you have

available.

2. Sit with feet and knees together and the soles of your feet flat.

3. Straighten your back against the back of the chair, with your

head in line with your spine.

4. Rest the palms of your hands gently on your thighs just above

your knees.

5. Sit tall, but relaxed, not rigid.

6. Close your eyes or focus on a spot in front of you with your

head erect.

7. Breathe through your nose with deep, slow, even breaths.

8. Stay in this position as long as you can. 20 minutes is ideal; 5

minutes is realistic. Just one minute can still help calm the

madness.

In Debt? Five Warning Signs You’re

In Over Your Head

Most of us carry some type of debt: mortgage, car

payments, credit cards, or educational loans. How do you know when

you’re carrying too much debt? Most people fall into debt trouble with

impulse buying. Here are five warning signs that you may be in

dangerous debt trouble, and what you can do about it:

• You’re unable to pay more than the minimum payments on your

credit cards.

• You have more than three major credit cards and they’re near the

credit limit.

• You use your credit cards to pay other bills.

• You hide your bills from your spouse.

• You don’t have a savings account.

If you answered “yes” to any of the above warning signs you may

want examine your debt load and set up a realistic budget. If you are

carrying credit card debt, begin by paying down the highest interest

credit cards bills first. Resolve to not use credit cards unless you have

the cash to pay your bill off when the bill arrives; otherwise, the first

step to financial health is to remove the temptation and cut up your

credit cards

Marriage is a union. A union of heart, a

union of soul, a union of minds, but wait till

you have to pay those union dues.

Q. Why is marriage like a violin?

A. After all the beautiful music is over, the

strings are still attached.

The success of marriage comes not in finding

the “right” person, but in the ability of both

partners to adjust to the real person they

inevitably realize they married.

Seven Secrets To A Happier

Marriage

Research shows it’s not the conflict that’s important in relationships,

it’s how you manage the conflict. Here are seven secrets to improving

your marriage...or any relationship that you want to enrich:

Keep Things Positive. If you want a happy relationship, researchers

say you must be good-natured and friendly to your partner. Criticism

and nit-picking are poison to good relationship building.

Follow The 1:5 Ratio. For every negative thing you say or do to your

partner, you must balance it out by saying or doing five positive

things.

Be Considerate and Respectful. Happy marriages and relationships

are based on friendship and respect. Couples who like each other’s

company and respect each other are more likely to stay together.

Don’t Try To Resolve The Irresolvable. There are times in a

relationship that certain issues may not be resolvable. The key is to

accept it and go forward.

Honor Differences. Couples who understand and accept each other’s

quirks and idiosyncrasies are more likely to stay together.

Sometimes It’s Not What You Say, But How You Say It. Ninety

percent of the friction of daily life is caused by the wrong tone of

voice and word choice. Think before you speak. (If necessary, discuss

conflicts while on the telephone, rather than face-to-face.)

Practice Relationship-Building Skills. Many couples think that, for

things to improve, big changes must take place. Actually, making

small changes in ourselves (acts of thoughtful kindness, compliments)

can effect big, positive changes in your relationships.

Remember that marriage is like a bank account—you get out what

you put in...with interest!

Battling Ants? Feed Them

Cornmeal .

Try this poison-free method of

getting rid of ants.

Place uncooked cornmeal or

Cream of Wheat on the ant

pile. The ants will eat it

because it tastes good. Their

bellies will expand and it will

kill them. You're saving a call

to the exterminator and using

a safer method.

Real Estate Corner

Q. How do I make my home stand out in the market without

spending much money?

A. If you want to get offers from buyers, make a great first impression

by improving these potential turn-offs:

Messy Landscaping: Buyers are looking for curb appeal. Take

the time to clean up an overgrown yard.

Nasty Odors: You may not smell some odors in your home

because you’ve become desensitized to them. Ask your

REALTOR® if there are odors (smoke, pet odors) and how you

can get rid of them.

Too Much Clutter: Pack away any items like excess furniture,

personal pictures and nick-knacks. They make your rooms look

smaller and distract the buyer from really seeing the house itself.

Old Paint: A fresh coat of neutral-colored paint is a low-cost

way to make your rooms look new and fresh.

`

Are you an "Empty Nester" who needs a

home for the future? Is it time to

downsize or to move into another home

more suitable for your glorious

retirement years?

Like thousands of others, you may be

discovering that after years of non-stop

child traffic in and out of your doors, toys

on the floor, music floating throughout,

suddenly you can hear a pin drop over

the quiet hum of the refrigerator. Your

rooms are filled with pictures and

memories of this wonderful time of your

life, but there are many empty rooms

gathering dust now that your children

have moved on. The freer years ahead are

exciting ones to look forward to, and it's

time for you to move on as well. If you

find yourself in this situation, you're in

vast and good company. And what that

means is that there are many wonderful

opportunities for you to create this new

chapter in your life . . . if you know

what it takes to get the most out of the

equity you've built up in your current

home.

To help you understand the issues

involved in making such a move, and

how to avoid the 7 most common and

costly mistakes most Empty Nesters

make, a new report called "Empty

Nester: How to Sell the Place You Call

identifies these issues, and shows you

how to steer clear of the mistakes that

could cost you literally thousands of

dollars.

Whether to move up or

exciting adventure once

Non-Driving Car Dangers

DANGER #1:

Trunk Entrapment.

In summer months, children can die if

they are trapped inside the car trunk.

When you leave your car, lock the doors

so kids can’t pop the trunk or get in

through the fold-down seats. Since 2001,

car manufacturers have included an

emergency trunk release. Older cars can

be retrofitted with an inexpensive kit at:

www.aablelocksmiths.com.

DANGER #2:

Service Station Fires.

Static electricity mixed with gasoline

vapors can ignite a fire. The Petroleum

Equipment Institute warns that starting to

pump gas, followed by getting in and out

of the car, and then touching the gas

nozzle is a common way to ignite a fire.

See a video at: www.pei.org/static.

If you get in and out of the car while the

gas is pumping, touch metal on the

outside of your car to discharge any

potential static electricity. If a fire starts

while fueling, don’t try to remove the

nozzle. Call for help. …
