Bridging Faith and Learning

Service of Worship

Third Sunday of Lent March 19, 2017

Eleven o’clock in the morning

In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus encounters a Samaritan woman at a well. In a series of exchanges, Jesus breaks down cultural barriers in order to speak to her heart. He offers her the gift of living water that will restore her soul, found only through faith in him. This echoes God’s miraculous provision of water to the Israelites in the wilderness many centuries before, as we too are invited to partake in Jesus’ new covenant of eternal life.

Word of God, one with the Most High, in whom alone we have our hope, everlasting light of heaven and earth, we break the silence of the peaceful night; Savior Divine, cast thine eyes upon us!

Pour on us the fire of thy mighty grace, that all hell may flee at the sound of thy voice; banish the slumber of a weary soul, that brings forgetfulness of thy laws!

O Christ, look with favor upon thy faithful people now gathered here to praise thee. Receive their hymns offered to thy endless glory; may they go forth filled with thy gifts.

Duke Chapel is a Christian church of an unusually interdenominational character, with a tradition of stirring music, preaching, and liturgy. It is also a grand building, suitable for hosting major events in the life of the University and its members; it further acts as a moderator for the diversity of religious identity and expression on campus. We welcome you to our life of worship, learning, dialogue, and service.
