Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God

Service of WorshipFifth Sunday of Easter

May 18, 2014Eleven o’clock in the morning

What does it mean to be a Christian community? As we move deeper into the season of Easter, the scriptures reflect on this question. In the John’s gospel, Jesus identifies himself as the way, the truth, and the life, and he invites his disciples to participate in this way. In 1 Peter, the author speaks of disciples as living stones who will be gathered and bound together for the building of a spiritual house—the Church. Churches are not simply places of aesthetic beauty, but buildings of living and active stones.

The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation.

The Chapel welcomes families with children. If at any time during the service your child needs a place for active play, please know there is a nursery in the Chapel basement.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may de-light in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Prayers of the PeoPle (The congregation responds to each petition: “Hear our prayer.”)

This morning we remember Duke Human Resources and its management of employee recruitment, benefits, policies, and training for both the University and Health System.

In Durham, we remember those who struggle with infertility and any who long to have children but cannot. We also remember those whose pregnancies create complexity, fear, or sadness.

news about the chaPel

The University recently announced an extended closure of the Chapel nave for a restoration project that will rehabilitate the ceiling, replace the roof, restore several stained glass windows and much of the woodwork, and clean the floors and walls. Next year, the Chapel nave will close to the public on May 11, 2015, and reopen in the spring of 2016. The Chapel community will continue to worship together each week and Sunday services will remain on campus during the restoration project. The Chapel’s Media Ministry will also continue during this time. This time of restoration will be an opportunity for the Chapel community be a “church without walls,” and live into the long-held belief that the Chapel is more than just a building. For further details regarding the project, and for updates on locations for services and events during the closure, please visit www.chapel.duke.edu/contact/restoration.
