1. Precautions
Follow these safety, ESD, and servicing precautions to prevent personal injury and equipment damage.
1-1. Safety Precautions
1. Be sure that all built-in protective devices are inplace. Restore any missing protective shields.
2. Make sure there are no cabinet openings throughwhich people- particularly children- might insertfingers or objects and contact dangerous voltages.
3. When re-installing chassis and assemblies, besure to restore all protective devices, includingcontrol knobs and compartment covers.
4. Design Alteration Warning:Never alter or add to the mechanical or electricaldesign of this equipment, such as auxiliaryconnectors, etc. Such alterations andmodifications will void the manufacturerÕswarranty.
5. Components, parts, and wiring that appear tohave overheated or are otherwise damagedshould be replaced with parts which meet theoriginal specifications. Always determine thecause of damage or overheating, and correct anypotential hazards.
6. Observe the original lead dress, especially nearsharp edges, AC, and high voltage powersupplies. Always inspect for pinched, out-of-place, or frayed wiring. Do not change thespacing between components and the printedcircuit board.
7. Product Safety Notice:Some electrical and mechanical parts have specialsafety-related characteristics which might not beobvious from visual inspection. These safetyfeatures and the protection they provide could belost if a replacement component differs from theoriginal. This holds true, even though thereplacement may be rated for higher voltage, wattage, etc.
Components critical for safety are indicated inthe parts list with symbols . Use onlyreplacement components that have the sameratings, especially for flame resistance anddielectric specifications. A replacement part thatdoes not have the same safety characteristics asthe original may create shock, fire, or other safetyhazards.

Precautions
1-2. ESD Precautions
Certain semiconductor devices can be easilydamaged by static electricity. Such components arecommonly called ÒElectrostatically Sensitive (ES)DevicesÓ, or ESDs. Examples of typical ESDs are:integrated circuits, some field effect transistors, andsemiconductor ÒchipÓ components. The techniques outlined below should be followedto help reduce the incidence of component damagecaused by static electricity.
CAUTION: Be sure no power is applied to thechassis or circuit, and observe all other safetyprecautions.
1. Immediately before handling a semiconductorcomponent or semiconductor-equipped assembly, drain off any electrostatic charge on your bodyby touching a known earth ground. Alternatively, employ a commercially available wrist strapdevice, which should be removed for your personalsafety reasons prior to applying power to the unitunder test.
2. After removing an electrical assembly equippedwith ESDs, place the assembly on a conductivesurface, such as aluminum or copper foil, orconductive foam, to prevent electrostatic chargebuildup in the vicinity of the assembly.
3. Use only a grounded tip soldering iron to solderor desolder ESDs.
4. Use only an Òanti-staticÓ solder removal device. Some solder removal devices not classified asÒanti-staticÓ can generate electrical chargessufficient to damage ESDs.
5. Do not use Freon-propelled chemicals. Whensprayed, these can generate electrical chargessufficient to damage ESDs.
6. Do not remove a replacement ESD from itsprotective packaging until immediately beforeinstalling it. Most replacement ESDs arepackaged with all leads shorted together byconductive foam, aluminum foil, or a comparableconductive material.
7. Immediately before removing the protectiveshorting material from the leads of a replacementESD, touch the protective material to the chassisor circuit assembly into which the device will beinstalled.
8. Maintain continuous electrical contact betweenthe ESD and the assembly into which it will beinstalled, until completely plugged or solderedinto the circuit.
9. Minimize bodily motions when handlingunpackaged replacement ESDs. Normal motions, such as the brushing together of clothing fabricand lifting oneÕs foot from a carpeted floor, cangenerate static electricity sufficient to damage anESD.
1-3. Lithium Battery Precautions
1. Exercise caution when replacing a Lithiumbattery. There could be a danger of explosion andsubsequent operator injury and/or equipmentdamage if incorrectly installed.
2. Be sure to replace the battery with the same orequivalent type recommended by themanufacturer.
3. Lithium batteries contain toxic substances andshould not be opened, crushed, or burned fordisposal.
