Career information sessionsOur suite of careers and university admissions presentations and campus tours are designed to provide valuable information for students about planning for the future.

Year 12 presentationWhere: At your school or on campusDuration: 30 - 45 minutesAudience: Year 12

The Year 12 presentation offers a comprehensive overview of study options at UniSA and covers important information about the application and admissions process including bonus points and pathway options. The presentation content uses examples to clearly outline entry requirements, important SATAC dates, support services and scholarship and accommodation information.

Year 11 presentationWhere: At your school or on campusDuration: 30 - 45 minutesAudience: Year 11

This interactive presentation is designed to test student knowledge about university study including what life as a university student is like and the differences between school and university. We discuss things to consider when researching and choosing a university degree and provide an overview of the SATAC application process to assist students with their transition to Year 12 and to help them gear up for life beyond school.

Careers evenings or exposWhere: At your school

UniSA staff and current students are available to attend career sessions at your school. We can deliver a tailored presentation, or simply talk to students and parents about study and career options at UniSA.

Parent information sessionsWhere: At your schoolDuration: 60 minutes or 90 minutes

This presentation assists parents and/or caregivers in gaining a better understanding of the differences between secondary school and tertiary education. Based on questions most frequently asked by parents, the session outlines the university application and admissions process, pathway options and transition and support services.

Designed to complement the Personal Learning Plan (PLP), the Year 10 presentation looks at personal attributes that may impact on students’ career decision making and introduces students to university study and factors that should be taken into consideration when looking at tertiary study as an option. We explore a typical week in the life of a university student highlighting the key differences between school and university.

Incorporate MyCareerMatch into your Year 10 presentation

MyCareerMatch is an online career profiling tool for schools to use free-of-charge through sponsorship from UniSA. MyCareerMatch provides students with a personalised career report outlining information about their personality style and a list of career options complementary to their natural strengths and talents.

Campus tours are a great way to give your students an insight to life as a UniSA student as they explore modern student spaces and outstanding teaching facilities.

Join us for a tour of our City West campus, located in the heart of the West End Precinct, as we explore the Jeffrey Smart Learning Centre, recently opened Student Lounge, Art, Architecture and Design Workshops, Moot courtroom, and more.

If your school is visiting the Year 12 SACE Art Shows then our Art on Show tours could be a great addition to their experience.

UniSA Business School Marketing Competition Year 11 and 12 students are invited to create a 30 second radio advertisement either individually or in teams of two. Entrants are provided with a competition pack to assist them with the development of their ad. Prizes are awarded to the best individual and school entries. The competition is offered during school terms 1 and 2 and can form part of your curriculum.

Career experience activities Communication and the ArtsArt on Show ToursWhere: City West campus Duration: 60 minutes Audience: Year 9, 10, 11 and 12This tour takes students on a journey that will challenge their perception of art. They will see first-hand the work of local and international artists, our specialised university facilities and the projects students are currently working on. Students will experience UniSA’s purpose-built art and design spaces, the South Australian School of Art (SASA) Gallery and the Samstag Museum at our City West campus.

MasterclassesWhere: Magill campus Duration: 60 minutes Audience: Year 10, 11 and 12The School of Communication, International Studies and Languages offers a variety of masterclasses to provide your students with the opportunity to further explore areas of interest in a variety of disciplines. Masterclasses run for up to one hour at UniSA’s Magill campus.

Linguistics - discovering the nature of language and how it matters in the contemporary world

Lighting workshop - exploring light and film on a DSLR camera

Character animation class - discovering 3D character animation production

Languages - exploring the application of the French, Italian, and Japanese languages

Creative writing - finding your voice and sharing your passion for writing and reading at the university level

Business and LawCommerce Careers DayWhere: City West campus Duration: One day Audience: Year 11The UniSA Business School invites year 11 students to spend a day learning about the life of an accountant. Students will hear from a panel of accountants and also take part in activities that promote the team work and communication skills necessary to succeed as an accountant. The afternoon will be spent on campus at the University of South Australia’s City West campus taking part in an activity looking at how accounting relates to every day organisations and events.

Learn the rule of Law with UniSAWhere: At your school Duration: 30 through to 90 minutes – can suit your requirements Audience: Year 10, 11 and 12In collaboration with the teacher and tailored to the curriculum, academics can guest lecture on specific legal topics to your students. Students will have the opportunity to learn from legal professionals who are experts in their field of law while listening and interacting with the academic and their peers to discover the varied career pathways that our law degree can provide.

Educating in the Law Moot Court

Where: City West campus Duration: Up to a full day Audience: Year 11 and 12The Moot Court can be used to run moots – mock trials in which students present a case to the judge and examine witnesses in the witness box. This gives students an opportunity to develop their communication and presentation skills, particularly in preparation for university study and their future careers.

Study Marketing at UniSA

Where: At your schoolDuration: 60-90 minutesAudience: Year 11 and 12 Business and Enterprise classes

Marketing students at the UniSA Business School are taught by leading marketing scientists from the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, one of the world’s leading centres for research in marketing. The Institute makes fundamental discoveries about consumer behaviour and advises international companies like Coca-Cola, Mars and Unilever. However very few high school students understand what marketing is and where a marketing career can take them. This presentation will provide a general overview of marketing as well as highlighting some key areas such as advertising and branding.

Health Sciences Chemistry workshop

Where: City East campusDuration: 60 minutesAudience: Year 11 and 12

The Chemistry workshop will showcase the ways chemistry is applied in popular career settings, revealing its use in a variety of different fields. Students will see beyond the idea of the traditional ‘scientist’ in a laboratory, and demonstrate the application of chemistry in real life situations. Within the Chemistry workshop, students can gain an understanding of the chemistry behind drug formulation by making zinc cream in our modern purpose-built Pharmacy Lab, learn how to identify drugs using chromatography techniques, discover the behaviour of materials through rheology – while making their own slime or see how chemistry is applied to the creation of food in a lolly making activity.

Biology workshop

Where: City East campusDuration: 60 minutesAudience: Year 11 and 12

Biology can be incorporated into a variety of different professions. During this workshop, students can learn how to identify blood types, gain a greater understanding of human biology through the examination of both healthy and diseased tissue specimens or see firsthand how physiology and biology are connected through a blood pressure activity. Students will see how studies in biology link to a range of careers, including exciting areas in medical science.

Physical Education workshop

Where: City East campusDuration: 60 minutesAudience: Year 11 and 12

Physical activity has a significant impact on the biological, psychological and social parameters of human life. Students can visit our state-of-the-art High Performance and Exercise Physiology lab, (adjacent to our gymnasium) and see how our accredited exercise physiologists use the delivery of exercise-based lifestyle and behaviour modification programs to prevent and treat injury and chronic diseases. Students can also become involved in the practical training and testing that is used with elite athletes to help improve their performance or use modern equipment to develop exercise and training programs in our biomechanics, environmental chamber and strength and conditioning laboratories.

Information Technology IT workshopsWhere: Mawson Lakes campus or at your school Duration: 60 minutes Audience: Year 9, 10, 11 and 12

Our lecturers in information technology have put together a series of practical workshops to give students an insight into some of the areas that will form the basis of computing and IT in the future. These workshops can be taken as single offerings or together with other IT workshops.

Workshops offered:

> Think like a gamer in the gaming workshop, by learning the best ways to engage players in new games (Dr Stewart von Itzstein).

> In the Robot Battles workshop, students use Java to develop a robot tank and battle with other teams in an on-screen area. They will learn the basics of programming with RoboCode, and are introduced to artificial intelligence (Dr Adam Jenkins).

> Customise an existing app for a mobile device to understand the basics of app design, in the Game App makeover. Change colours, fonts and styles and then copy it to your Android to take home (Dr Grant Wigley).

> In the Inside-Out PC workshop, open up the lid of a PC and disconnect the memory, CPU and disk to identify what each part does and to understand how current computers work (Dr Grant Wigley).

> Stop hacking or important data being stolen or modified, as you configure a wireless network ensuring all security precautions are taken in the Wifi Safe workshop (Dr Grant Wigley).

UniSA Connect: STEM ProgramsUnique OpportunitiesThe University of South Australia’s City East campus is commonly known as the Health Hub, home to our health and medical science programs. Featured throughout the campus are various state-of-the-art teaching facilities and laboratories, including our high tech Virtual Environment Radiotherapy Training (VERT) suite, fully functioning X-Ray suites or our purpose built hospital wards including our Emergency Department and Midwifery and Paediatric Units, plus much more. Students can have the opportunity to participate in a variety of interactive activities within these modern teaching facilities on campus, giving a unique insight to the diverse careers available as part of the expanding health industry.

UniSA Connect focuses on inspiring science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) study and career awareness with secondary school students. The suite of enriching opportunities and experiential programs linked to the secondary curriculum aims to promote educational attainment and enthuse students to pursue STEM study pathways at the University of South Australia. Also offered are professional development opportunities for teachers particularly focused on new technologies and pedagogical approaches.

For teachersProfessional development opportunities and resources

> Training for PLP teachers (Minimum of 5 people) UniSA’s 90-minute PLP training session will provide PLP staff with important information and tools to assist students considering a university pathway. Attendees will learn about the process of applying to university and factors to take into consideration when researching tertiary study and selecting subjects. For more information contact the UniSA Student Liaison Team.

> Career Adviser Information Session Attend UniSA’s Career Adviser Information Session to find out about the latest UniSA initiatives and new program information. You will also get a chance to hear from key university staff, as well as collect copies of the latest discipline brochures. All high school career advisers will be sent an invitation to attend the event early in the year.

> RiAus UniSA proudly supports RiAus - Australia’s science channel, promoting public awareness and understanding of science. RiAus makes science fun, inspiring and accessible for all Australians.

RiAus produces thought-provoking and entertaining events, broadcasts and publications as well as education and teacher support programs. Visit RiAus.org.au to discover the wonders of science.

> UniSA newsletters and ezines The Student Liaison Team regularly communicates new program and admissions information, professional development opportunities for career advisers and subject teachers, as well as upcoming events and school services. > Teacher professional learningUniSA Connect offers a range of teacher professional learning opportunities for secondary school teachers. Workshops focus on new technologies such as 3D printers, sensor technology, and pedagogical approaches.
