GROUP THERAPY ACTIVITIES

These are some of the intervention group sessions which we regularly provide to support groups and residential settings. All can be tailored to your group with regard to the level of their communication difficulties, other cognitive impairments and your group’s purpose:

• Communication & Wellbeing sessions to reminisce about previous eras, retell stories and share memories. Or just to listen to others. This provides motivation for communication as well as creating social spaces for people to make friends. It helps with memory and orientation as well as ensuring everyone’s identity is maintained.

• Quiz & Games sessions to explore different areas of language and cognition, offering an opportunity for those with communication strategies to use and trial them, as well as providing stimulating activities to all.

• Conversation Partner Scheme where someone trained in being a conversation partner (not a speech therapist, but under our guidance) visits and talks on a 1:1 basis with one of the members of your group. This allows things to be done in a more personalised way and at a slower pace; ideal for those who would enjoy the Communication & Wellbeing sessions but find it difficult to keep abreast of the conversation and participate.

STAFF & CARER TRAINING

• Communication Friendly Environment support to ensure the simple interventions which will benefit the whole group are working effectively e.g. symbols, written information etc.

• Information sessions where we discuss general strategies which would aid the vast majority of your group with their communication as well as troubleshoot some questions.

• Communication Partner Training to increase awareness of the strategies and support which could improve the quality of their conversations at home. This training also acts as peer-support and provides a space to talk frankly about difficulties and concerns, introducing them to a support network.

• Bespoke Staff Training on a topic of communication or to explore new interventions which may be useful with your client group. The training session can be for as long as you would like on the topic(s) of your choice. We have also some titles and sessions pre-written which can be used as inspiration or used in their entirity.
