GENERIC SMOV PROGRAM
• A SMOV program is associated with each servicing mission (viz. www.stsci.edu/smov)
• Generic SMOV goals– Timely recommissioning of the Observatory for science
operations• Commission newly installed science instruments• Recommission existing science instruments

SMOV4 INITIAL CONDITIONS
• New gyros• New batteries• Two new Science Instruments (SIs)
– COS in place of COSTAR– WFC3 in place of WFPC2
• 2 Restored SIs– STIS– ACS
• Refurbished FGS– FGS2R2 in place of FGS2R
• Other effects– NICMOS “warming up” for 8-10 days
26 Oct. 2007 COS Science Team Meeting 7
SMOV4 -BASIC APPROACH-
• Proceed with commissioning of existing SIs while new ones outgass• Avoid “bright earth” occultations (BEA) for 21 days following Release
– Use bright earth “allowances” during the BEA period• Perform the “long” VDT early in BEA period• FGS2R2 – Start commissioning prerequisites early using BEA-compatible
targets and BEA allowances– Allows relief to FGS3 guiding asap
• STIS – Use BEA-compatible targets for early commissioning activities• Start NCS early for NICMOS cool-down
– 2-week cooldown assumed for planning purposes• SMOV SI commissionings proceed pretty much independently of each
other.– Each SI undergoes a set of engineering activation activities, optical
alignment/focus activities, and science calibrations– EROs and GO science are enable asap on a per channel basis.
* BEA = Bright Earth Avoidance (period)

SMOV PROJECT REVIEWCOS-RELATED ITEMS
• Need to study possibility of shortening the COS commissioning period.– Preliminary discussions have succeeded in
shortening it by 2-3 weeks.
• FUV Door Opening– How many HST high voltages must be off for
this operation?
26 Oct. 2007 COS Science Team Meeting 12
SM4 SIMS/JIS & SMGT• HST Project conducts a series of operational simulations (Sims) and Joint
Operational Simulations (JIS)– To simulate various portions of SM4– Familiarize participants with Operational procedures, interfaces, and protocols– Certify participants for SM4 support
• SIM 4 (EVA 3) COS, ACS Repair– 10/11/2007 - complete
• SIM 7-8 (EVA 3-4) COS, ACS Repair, STIS Repair, NOBL8– 11/28-29/2007
• JIS 1 (EVA 3) COS, ACS Repair– 03/18/2008
• Servicing Mission Ground Tests (SMGT)– Test ability of ground system to support selected SM4 and SMOV4 activities
• Special commanding is tested

EARLY RELEASE OBSERVATION (ERO) PLANNING
- SM4 EROs will be planned for each of the HST Science Instruments.
- Keith Noll is ERO lead at STScI.
- ERO planning teams are in place for each instrument.
- Planning for COS and WFC3 is well developed.
- Multiple targets have been identified and are being prioritized.
-Recommendations to NASA HQ (Alan Stern) in February-March 2008; selection of final targets by ~April 2008.
- Phase 2s for final targets to STScI PIT by 15 May 2008.

SMOV Office Space• STScI has begun discussion of office space needs with
COS IDT and WFC3 IPT– Initial plan is to be able to accommodate up to 4 short term
visitors and 1 long term visitor in the post-SM4 period– Duration and timing of visits will depend on final schedule of
SMOV activities– Visitors will assist in SMOV analyses and work closely with
Institute instrument teams– No present plans to host ACS or STIS visitors, but this can be
revisited (or even accommodated in current plan) if the need arises
• Office space for external visitors will be worked into master office space plan for the coming year
