Getting Started with Be SafeBe Safe is an easy to use, accessible tool available 24/7 to support decision making during a crisis. Be Safe is available in an app ver-sion* and as a pocket guide, aimed to help youth in London, Ontario and surrounding area. Be Safe is meant to complement a helping relationship and is not a substitute for professional, clinical services.
Be Safe features: ● A personal safety plan, including reminders of unique coping strat-
egies and a crisis plan with personal and medical information ● A decision-making tool, offering suggestions for local resources
that might be appropriate, as well as a personalized ‘Get Help’ script, drawing from answers to construct a guide for reaching out to professionals or other supports
● A list of local resources, including hours of operation, ages served and contact details
Who should use Be Safe?Any young person who has been in a mental health or emotional crisis or who may experience a crisis could benefit from this tool. It is important that the young person and support person look over Be Safe together. It is best completed when the young person is not in crisis.
How does Be Safe work? ● Download the Be Safe app and/or print the Pocket Guide from
www.mindyourmind.ca/interactive/be-safe ○ Make sure to print the Pocket Guide double-sided so it can be
properly folded ○ The app and Pocket Guide may be used together or separately
● Review and update your Be Safe Plan often ● Use your Be Safe tool between sessions or whenever you need
support
How was this developed?Be Safe was created by a dedicated team of youth, mindyourmind, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and other partners in the Systems Improvement through Service Collaboratives initiative in London, Ontario and surrounding area.
How can I give my feedback on Be Safe?Help us improve Be Safe for you and others by filling out our survey at www.fluidsurveys.com/surveys/mindyourmind/besafe/

Be Safe App
1
App Requirements
Privacy
Website access / content
List of local services
Coping strategies
Decision Tree
2
Youth and family identified the following app requirements
Privacy – youth were concern about who would have access to their information and wanted to ensure there were some privacy protocols in place
Website access/content – youth recognized that not all youth have access or own an android/iphone cell phone and wanted the content of the app to also be available on a website
List of local resources – youth wanted info on local resources e.g. hours of operations, contact info, etc.
Coping strategies – youth wanted access to reliable information, how too or kits that could provide them with tips on how they could cope in certain situations
Decision tree – youth wanted a tool that could help them consider outcomes, or could provide them with some suggestions
The Service Collaborative took these requirements and reached out to Mind your mind and their app Be Safe.
Be Safe was created by a dedicated team of youth, mindyourmind, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and other partners in the Systems Improvement through Service Collaboratives initiative in London, Ontario and surrounding area to improve access to and coordination of mental health and addictions services for children, youth and families.
Youth with lived experience have contributed their expertise to help develop Be Safe, a mobile app with a paper-based “pocket guide” companion. This resource is designed to help youth manage mental health and addiction crises and identify services in London and it has been expanded to Sudbury, Manitoulin, Chapleau, as well as other southern Ontario locations.
2
3
Why an app and not a paper companion?
Easy and accessible 24/7
Not all young people have access to smartphones 24/7
Paper version also acts as a backup if you don’t have your phone
3
4
Make Inform Decisions
Allows users to select their region with local resources in their communities
Has five main features:
A decision aid
A list of resources
A personalized “get help” script
A safety plan
How to reach out safely

Reaching out safely
6
Safety Plan
Many youth carry their cell phones. Very few carry their health card. By completing the personal information section of the be safe app you ensure that during a crisis you will be able to get the service you need.
7
8
Pocket Guide
Say you're on three or four medications with varying dosages that you take on varying times during the day ... that might be hard to get out during a crisis
By completing the pocket guide (print or app version) it will help you communicate your needs during your crisis and ensure health providers have the right information.
8
Mind your Mind website
9
Mind your mind provides:
Credible information on anxiety, eating disorder, bullying, depression, depression, suicide, etc.
Allows youth to submit:
Personal stories, Poetry, Visual artwork, Dance routines, Photography
It does not provide:
Chat rooms or forums
Reason: Safety – they cannot ensure safety through the forum
9
10
Help Resources
It also has:
Wellness tips for coping and personal growth
Resources on how to talk to doctors, therapists, to how to help a friend in crisis
10
11
In collaboration with HSN, a summer student “Jordan Barr” engaged our three communities about the Be Safe initiative.
He reached 30 organizations, 786 providers and 467 youth, and with 387 downloads (Fall 2015).
