This week, the Alexandria Gazette Packet turnsover its pages to the youth and students.

We asked principals and teachers from areaschools to encourage students to contribute theirwords, pictures and photos for our annual Children’sIssue.

The response as always was enormous. While wewere unable to publish every piece we received, wedid our best to put together a paper with a fair sam-pling of the submitted stories, poems, drawings,paintings, photographs and other works of art. Be-cause of the response, we will continue to publishmore artwork and writings throughout January.

We appreciate the extra effort made by schoolstaff to gather the materials during their busy timeleading up to the holidays. We’d also like to en-courage both schools and parents to mark their 2014calendars for early December, the deadline for sub-missions for next year’s Children’s Gazette Packet.Please keep us in mind as your children continueto create spectacular works of art and inspiringpieces of writing in the coming year.

The children’s issue is only a part of our year-round commitment to cover education and our lo-cal schools. As always, the Gazette Packet welcomesletters to the editor, story ideas, calendar listingsand notices of local events from our readers. Students in the IB Middle Years Program from George Washington Middle Schools reflected after reading “I am Malala.” Somewrote thank you cards to U.S. soldiers.

One Voice Can Change the WorldI am writing this to prove that your voice can change the

world. Malala Yousafzai spoke up and she made a problemcome to light.

Malala is 16, from the Swat region in Pakistan. In October2012 she was shot in the head by the Taliban because shespoke up for girls’ education.

They came to her town and slowly started to destroy herlife, and even threatened to kill her father (who ran a school

for girls). Malala is still alive, though, and still fighting for hercause.

Malala’s struggle is important because it has made problemsin Pakistan much more well-known. She has continued to fighteven when the Taliban tried to silence her. She is making adifference, and she’s only 16. Malala proves that even just onevoice can change the world.

UntitledSixty-two inches high, 1,200 pounds,

chestnut brown body, brown sugar hair.I am only ten years old, and all I can seeis his broad brown side and the groundunder our feet. I step on the red woodenstool to reach the stirrup. I grab thesaddle and hook my brown dusty bootinto the flopping metal oval on the star-board side and hoist myself on top of thetowering hoofed creature. I am proud tobe so high. As soon as I perch myself onthe aged saddle, I can see the manes ofother horses, the auburn coloredchipped painted roof that stretches overthe stable, the windmill that scrapes thesky as it waits at the end of the gate —and all the way to the other side of theranch. I shift my saddle, pick up theweathered thin reins in both hands, andwith the heel of my boot, I lightly tap hisside, and make a clicking noise. Likeevery other time, I am amazed that solittle will move an animal this big.

Six horses and riders all walk in acircle in the ring. It is late July and theair hangs very heavy around us. The skyshimmers with the brightness of the sun,the heat, and the dust. We are dressedto protect our skin while we ride, withjeans and shirts that hold the heat onour skins. The heavy black helmets areclamped on our heads, with sweat trick-ling down the backs. The pace is so slowthat it feels like we are sleepwalking,except that it is hot not dreamy. We pickup our pace to a trot, making a smallbreeze on our faces, but also creatingsmall dust swirls that lay in wait in theair for the person coming behind.

One lap around, out of the corner ofmy eye, I see my riding instructorperched on top of the rough woodenfence, eagerly watching us. She holds onlike a bird, relying on her feet to keepher balance. Before she opens hermouth I know what she is going to say.She has that look of confidence andhope for my success today. I feel as if weare having a telepathic conversation,and then I hear her voice. It is soft andmuffled, like it is hiding under asnuggie. Every time she uses “th” or “sh”words, her tongue slips between herteeth and extrudes a little bit of air. Weare now going one-by-one. The othersstand in a compact circle in the centerof the ring. As she tells me to go a littlefaster, a feeling of excitement tingles mybody, and I imagine that it also entersthe horse through its back. The butter-flies in my stomach start to take off in

flight.The little breeze on my face mixes

with the sweat trickling down from thehair under my helmet. I tighten my gripon the reins. I feel like I am the singerwho just has that one important line inthe song to sing as a solo. I am excited,proud, and fearless. This feeling is thething I am going to tell my mom once Igot home. As I turn the last turn, againI hear her voice: “Go Morgan, go.”

My body, not my mind, processeswhat she is saying. Through a pull anda kick, I can feel that one stride is nowlonger and faster than the ones beforeit. I can feel the butterflies turn to hor-nets in a nest. The new creatures arebuzzing much harder and faster thanthe soft ones they replaced. I do not feelthe air in my face, just the sweat, andthe sun suddenly feels 15-degrees hot-ter. Halfway around the ring, and theworld starts to come back to normal, asthe buzzing in my stomach quiets down.

All at once, as the horse’s rocking gaitcontinues, he puts his head down to at-tend to a fly on his leg. My reins pull

forward and pull me with them. Myinstructor’s voice is not so soft this time.As she tells me to pull up on the reins, Iyank on the reins and use all my energyto lean back. His head comes up andthen down. The rocking motion is like acarousel horse, but this time I am at-tached to it like a slingshot. Suddenly Icannot feel the saddle underneath me.I flip heels overhead before I even real-ize I am coming off. I hear a rush ofsound that stops when I hit the harddirt. It is in my mouth and nose. Theonly thing I can feel is my cheeks gettinghotter and hotter. I am lying on top ofmy left arm so I roll over to get up. Iwonder if anyone else has ever been thisembarrassed. It is as if I was asnowboarder who tried a trick she wasexpected to do in front of her friends,and then completely wiped out on herface in the snow.

I quickly stand up to try brush off thedirt off my shirt, my jeans, and my pride,with both hands. A pain unexpectedlyshoots through my entire body, and Inotice that my arm now looks like a

grasshopper leg. It has a new twist in theforearm that bends it away from mybody. Not as God intended it. I suddenlydecide that embarrassment is the leastof my problems. It hurts like nothing Ican put words to. My face is nowstreaked with tears, not just sweat, andthe dirt is getting in my eyes. I know youare supposed to get back on the horse

after a fall, but am I really supposed toget back on him now? I decide that willhave to wait until tomorrow.

And, the next day, I do get back up,complete with a brand new blue castfrom my bicep to my fingers.

Robert “Bobby” Deane Via, 58, a Cape Coral, FL resident since 1986, formerly of Alexandria, VA, passed away Wednesday, December 11, 2013 in Ft. Myers. He was born June 21, 1955 in Alexandria.

Bobby was a faithful and loving son, a wonderful father and husband and a friend to all who knew him. He loved golf, family and his faithful dog Dingo. Better known as the unof-ficial “Mayor of Cape Coral”, Bobby was blessed with count-less friends. All you had to do was meet him and you had made a friend for life. Bobby was an unabashed ladies man as well as a man’s man. He had a smile and a laugh that would light up any room. He was a tremendous cook, me-chanic and master conversationalist with a great sense of humor. Bobby loved life like there was no tomorrow. He will be missed. So where ever you are, please raise a glass to Cape Coral’s prodigal son for one last toast. Cheers Bobby!

He is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Christina C. Via of Cape Coral; one loving son, James “Deane” Via also of Cape Coral; his mother, Joyce T. Bernstine of Lakewood, OH; his father, Robert E. Via and wife Marilyn of Colonial Beach, VA; a sister, Torey Via Worron and husband Jeff al-so of Lakewood, OH; a niece, Tully Lee Worron of Lake-wood; a sister-in-law, Tresa A. Caplanis of Woodbridge, VA; a brother-in-law, Mike W. Caplanis of Stephen City, VA; as well as Dingo!

Bobby was preceded in death by his step-father, Dr. Richard L. Bernstine.

A Celebration of Larger Than Life, Life will be held 2:30PM Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Chapel By The Sea, 11580 Chapin Lane, Captiva , FL 33924 with Pastor George Morris officiating. A casual dress reception will immediately follow at the Captiva Island Yacht Club, 15903 Captiva Dr., Captiva, FL 33924.

If you will be attending the services, it is requested that you bring any photos of Bobby that you may have to be placed on a memory board as a gift to the family.
