Dear Friends,

We are, once again, proud to share with you our Annual Report, highlighting the events, programs, youth and supporters that made 2016 so amazing and impactful.

Since 1965, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas’ (BGCD) mission has been to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens, and we have done just that.

For over 51 years, thousands of youth have benefited from the programs that are offered at BGCD and many come back as mentors, investors, and volunteers because they believe in our mission. In this report, we celebrate a successful year of implementing programs designed to add to the quality of lives of Dallas youth, empower students to plan beyond high school and college, and create connections that enhance the way we operate as an organization.

Our business is helping children to reach their full potential. We do that by providing opportunity. How do we do it? Daily, over 1800 children and youth are kept safe in the hours after school and during the summer, when their parents are working at 20 Club sites. We offer a hot meal for dinner, healthy snack, time for exercise, help with homework and a wide range of enriching activities in the arts, athletics, STEAM, academics and community service. These activities provide opportunity for our children to learn new skills, discover their passions, and see themselves as people who matter.

Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dallas can only do this with the help of donors and volunteers recognized in the pages that follow. More than 80% our children come from low-income households and all come from families working hard to keep up with the demands of parenting. By providing cost-effective, quality programs for a truly diverse membership body. We are a unique and valued resource in the Dallas area. We help our community raise its citizens of the future.

BGCDallas 2016 S ignature Events

Our 8th Annual TOPPs (Threshold of Opportunities) Celebration took place on May 19, 2016 at the Frontiers of Flight Museum. This special dinner provided a unique opportunity for BGCD Club members to dine with corporate sponsors and community leaders. It is designed to honor our members and to bring supporters of the Club in direct contact with the children that benefit from their generosity. The TOPPs Celebration allows Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas to recognize our Youth of the Year and Collegiate STEPS graduating seniors with special awards and scholarship money.

Thanks to our hard working scholarship committee and the giving nature of many individuals and organizations, we were able to award over $132,000 in scholarships to deserving seniors. In 2016, we celebrated the graduation of almost 80 Collegiate STEPS participants.

Our 11th Annual Corporate Cup golf tournament, presented by Kimberly-Clark Corporation took place at Dallas National Golf Club on Tuesday, November 8th. As a result of generous support from our sponsors and players, the event raised $300,000. This means more net dollars are available to the Clubs to further their effective and impactful programs.

On Saturday, November 12, 2016, over 300 guests joined us at the Hilton Anatole for a Solids-and-Stripes-Soiree themed dinner party. The Imperial Ballroom was transformed with alternating solid and striped table cloths, 3 stages, glow walls, casino games, billiard tables and much more. Guest speaker and BGCD alum, Byron Sanders, captured the audience with his vibrant personality and powerful testimonial. To avoid guests being stuck in their seats all night, they were only served their first two courses. The dessert bar opened at the conclusion of the program and the opening of the dance floor, casino and billiard tournament. Georgia Bridgwater Band did a phenomenal job of interacting with the audience and keeping the dance floor packed…they even started a conga line!

Conga line aside, what truly made this event special was awarding longtime supporters, Helen and Clint Murchison, III, with Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas’ Lifetime Achievement Award. The Murchison family has been a driving force behind the success of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas since its inception in 1965.

This year’s event could not have been as successful without the help of our dedicated Chairs, Laura and Dennis Moon, U.S, Trust; our Board Champion, Jim Trester; and our Host Committee. We are so appreciative of all of the time, energy and resources they put into ensuring The Billiard Ball was a memorable experience.

Our annual math competition, Math Blazers, was held on Saturday, April 30th. Math Blazers is an event hosted by Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas that allows 3rd – 12th grade students to display their math skills in a math competition that covers specific skills tied directly to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) objectives at each grade level. Over 100 employees of Comcast, NBC 5, and Telemundo employees joined us at our Grand Prairie Boys & Girls Club location as volunteers. Volunteers were able to help youth with math games and workouts, oversee rocket launches, and conquer obstacle courses.

BGCDallas 2016 Program Events

On Saturday, September 17th, hundreds of Club members from our various locations came together at Celebration Station for our annual Day for Kids event. Created as a day to foster relationships between adults and children, the mission of BGC Day for Kids is to establish a day to celebrate and honor children through the gift of meaningful time. Thank you to the many sponsors that supported this special initiative and aided us in providing such a fun and memorable day for our youth.

The East Dallas Boys & Girls Club Advisory Council hosted their 7th Annual Foodiepalooza event on September 29, 2016 at The Filter Building at White Rock Lake. Guests were treated to a fun and unique culinary experience that featured food and beverage tasting stations. Foodiepalooza is the premier fundraiser benefiting East Dallas Boys & Girls Club and raised over $48,000 in 2016.

Our Grand Prairie Advisory Council hosted their first Holiday Wine and Dine, benefiting our Grand Prairie Boys & Girls Club, on December 8, 2016. The event took place at a beautiful model home by Grand Homes, located in Grand Prairie, TX. It was a night of great food and wine, silent auction, music and much more.

The Gobble Hobble, presented by Methodist Richardson Medical Center, took place on Saturday, November 19th. This Thanksgiving tradition was hosted by our Richardson Boys & Girls Club Advisory Council at Galatyn Park. Runners of all levels had the opportunity to participate in either the 1 mile Family Fun Run, 5k or 10k. The event featured a Kid Zone with bounce houses, balloon animals, and much more. This was definitely a family affair!

This fun golf tournament took place April 26, 2016 at the beautiful Canyon Creek Country Club in Richardson, TX. The Annual Golf Classic features a four-person scramble and is hosted every spring by the Richardson Boys & Girls Club Advisory Council. Due to their fundraising efforts, the 2016 golf tournament raised over $23,000 to go towards programming at Richardson BGC. Special thanks to Fujitsu for supporting the many youth of Richardson Boys & Girls Club by participating as the Presenting Sponsor of this successful tournament.


Thanks to the generosity of our donors, partners and other supporters, 2016 was a great year for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas. Through this support we were able to deepen our impact on the youth of Dallas, which in turn, helps strengthen the city and our communities. None of our successes would be possible without the strong support of caring corporations and foundations that believe in our mission. With this support we can continue to ensure that every child who enters our doors will graduate from high school on time, with a solid plan for their future. While not all-inclusive, the following are a few notable examples of our community partnerships.

BGCDallas 2016 Community Partners

150 Lowe’s Heroes from 14 Dallas stores volunteered roughly 2,800 hours of labor to make much-needed repairs to our Mesquite Boys & Girls Club. Renovations included: building a fence, complete renovation of the kitchen (i.e. new appliances, fixtures and warming oven), replacing cabinets and flooring in Arts & Crafts room, and repairing sheetrock, painting and replacing floors in Learning Center.. They even built a community garden for our Torch Club at Mesquite BGC to take care of (scarecrow included!). Torch Club is a BGC program that awakens and strengthens the spirit of leadership and community advocacy in our youth. These renovations, which cost approximately $100,000 in materials and labor, enhance the experience of the 160 youth served everyday by our Mesquite Club location.

Junior League of Dallas not only provided over 30 mentors for our Collegiate STEPS program but they also contributed $15,000 to ensure the program’s success. Collegiate STEPS is a yearlong college prep program offered by BGCD to mentor and guide high school juniors and seniors to help them navigate the college admissions process.

DPR Construction not only donated $25,000 in labor, materials and professional services for the renovation of the kitchen at our Oak Cliff Boys & Girls Club location, but they also awarded BGCD with a $25,000 grant. Renovations of the kitchen included: new lights, floors, cabinets, door, and appliances. They also painted the space to make it a more lively space for our youth. Because of this renovation, our Oak Cliff Club is able to maximize the storage of food to be able to provide hot meals and snacks to the 180 youth served by the Club everyday.

Special thanks to Gensler for donating 550 hours of professional services to develope the design concept of the newly renovated kitchen for DPR to bring to life!


Over a year ago, one of our Board of Directors, George Watson, received a call at his office from a woman with a British accent. She introduced herself as Christine MacLaurin. Christine and her late husband, Jim MacLaurin, were avid readers of Bob Miller’s column and couldn’t help but notice George Watson appearing in many of the articles highlighting nonprofits focusing on education. With an interest in learning more about Boys & Girls Club, she invited him to lunch. It was at this lunch that he learned about Christine and her late husband’s desire to leave their estate to a deserving charity. With no close family to whom they wanted to leave their estate, Christine was looking for a way to ensure all of their hard work and compassion would continue impacting lives even after their time here on Earth.

It was ten years after Mr. MacLaurin’s death, as George was having lunch with Mrs. MacLaurin. She told him that in the last few weeks she had been diagnosed with lung and brain cancer. Her doctors told her that she had about nine months to live. She felt that she needed to make de-cisions about her estate in the immediate future. She had become interested in Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas after reading Bob Miller ’s articles on BGCD’s new educational programs and the fact that George Watson was associated with the organization. She saw George Watson as a reliable path to learn more about Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas.

Mrs. MacLaurin loved learning about the educational and betterment programs, particularly Collegiate Steps, a program designed to introduce 9th and 10th graders to the idea that they can go to college and to support them over the next two to three years in reaching a goal of going to college. Another was Career Ready, a program designed to help high school students determine a career that suits them and move them toward the necessary certification in their chosen field.

As her death was imminent, Christine was determined to see that the assets she and Jim MacLaurin had worked to accumulate were conserved and as much as possible, would go to her desired recipients through her will, in which she named Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas as one of her main beneficiaries.

Five months after Mrs. MacLaurin’s death, slightly over $400,000 was distributed to Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas and to the North Texas Public Broadcasting for a total distribution of over $800,000 from the MacLaurin Estate. This gift is thought to be the largest gift from an individual in the history of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas. (There are prior gifts from foundations, institutions and Crystal Charity which were larger). Part of these funds are being used to seed BGCD’s new Accelerated Early Childhood Education (AECE) Program, which is aimed at first graders reading below grade level. The program launched at two locations January 17, 2017 and will continue to grow. Also, a portion of these funds will be used to start another program concerned with partnering with Momentous Institute, and their Social and Emotional Learning curriculum, which deals with mental health issues of children.

The Extraordinary Woman & Her Legacy Gift to BGCD

East Dallas Boys & Girls Club member Almira Akinpelu was announced as the Youth of the Year for BGCD in January of 2016. Youth of the Year is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.

Almira has been a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas since she was six years old. She actively participated in programs such as: Collegiate STEPS, SMART Girls and Keystone Club. She also served as a Youth STEM Ambassador for Imagine Science. She even started a book club for nine-year-old girls at the East Dallas Club, where she created all of the lesson plans and worksheets, guided members in their book selections and served as the book club moderator.

Almira graduated in the top 10% of her class and spent her last three years of school as a member of the National Honor Society. Dedicated to excelling in her studies, she received an award for academic excellence in Pre-AP Physics. She is currently studying Kinesiology at The University of Texas in Tyler.
