Harbour Master/Pilot: Capt. K. MacLean

Deputy Harbour Master/Pilot: Capt. A. Thomson

Assistant Harbour Master/Pilot: Capt. D. Duncan

Engineer: A. F. Cruden Msc. CEng, FICE, FIStructE.

Location: Latitude 57° 29’N Longitude 004° 14’W

The port lies close to the city centre and thus has excellent communications links not only with the city but the surrounding wider region. The Port of Inverness is connected to the west coast of Scotland by the adjacent Caledonian Canal, which can be used by vessels up to 45.72 metres in length, 10.67 metres beam and 4.11 metres draught. Although the Canal is 50 miles long, there is a saving of approximately 350 miles in the passage round the Pentland Firth. The port works closely with Scottish Canals in promoting the Caledonian Canal as a route for commercial cargo.

The Port of Inverness is one of the major economic hubs of the Highlands and provides a vital gateway for companies in the north both to export and import a wide variety of goods. It is also one of Scotland’s most sheltered natural deep water harbours and as a result the port can offer ships almost guaranteed access irrespective of the weather.

The Port of Inverness is a the major distribution centre for the import of fuel oils

Recent developments have made the port one of the most modern in the north with excellent covered storage and laydown facilities as follows:

North Longman QuayCompleted in 2009, this quay formed part of the wider North Longman Development that reclaimed approximately 10 hectares of land. The quay is 150 metres in length and has been the focus for the port’s rapidly expanding renewable energy business. Over the last 18 months, the port has handled turbine machinery for Corriemony, Rothes II, Berryburn and Clashindarroch wind farms. The quay also has a heavy lift pad that can take lifts of up to 200 tonnes although through a variety of engineering solutions, this weight can be increased. The heavy lift pad has been used recently for one off project cargo lifts. An additional benefit with this quay is the extensive area of quayside laydown space that is available. Up to 20,000 sq.m. can be made available for cargoes. As part of the North Longman development, a new entrance was created and the bellmouth entrance can accommodate loads of up to 57 metres in length.

Longman QuayFour berths are available on this, the main commercial quay. The quay is 340 metres in length and has three transit sheds providing covered storage totalling 4,606 sq.m. In addition there are additional canopied areas of 3,970 sq.m. These quays are used mainly for general bulk cargoes that include timber products, round logs, road salt, carbon blocks, grain, rapeseed, animal feed, woodchips and pipes. Other cargoes include salmon smolts, machinery, barley, pulpwood, and fish waste.

Citadel Quay NorthThis quay comprises a single berth commercial quay that is 100 metres in length. A significant advantage is that there is direct access from the quayside to Longman Drive. Most recently this quay has been used for lay up or minor ship repairs.

Citadel Quay SouthThis is primarily used as the fuel berth for tankers offloading cargoes to the adjacent fuel depot. The quay is 145 metres in length. The port is the major distribution centre for the north of Scotland for imported fuel oils, derv, diesel, aviation fuel and heavy oil, with significant volumes arriving each year.

RenewablesThe development of the North Longman Quay has made the port attractive to companies operating in the renewable energy field and over the last 2 years, the port has established a track record for handling delivery of wind turbine machinery for onshore wind farms. To date machinery has been handled for Corriemony, Rothes II, Berryburn and Clashindarroch windfarms. The new entrance is capable of handling turbine blades of up to 57 metres in length. Access from the port is straight forward along Stadium Drive to the Longman Roundabout and onto the A9 in both a north and southbound directions. Coupled with the extensive laydown facilities, this makes the port a natural choice for the renewable industry.

Cruise ScotlandThe port is an active member of this organisation targeting the cruise market. The port has attracted small cruise ships of up to 300 passengers. Larger vessels can anchor and tender passengers to arrive at the marina pontoon where movements are easily managed. Coach parking is immediately available to landing areas throughout the port.

Inverness can offer cruise passengers access to world renowned destinations such as Loch Ness, Cawdor Castle, Castle Stuart Golf Course, the whisky distilleries of Speyside and the Cairngorm National Park without the necessity of long tedious coach journeys. Loch Ness for example is less than 15 minutes from the port. A traditional warm Highland welcome awaits visitors to the port.

Future DevelopmentThe port is keen to expand its user base and there are further expansion plans for land held under ownership out to the Kessock Bridge. The potential to create additional waterfront land is unrivalled in the city and represents a unique opportunity. Sinclair Browne, Port Chief Executive, comments “Over the last few years we have created a modern vibrant port that now offers users high quality facilities. We are now keen to engage with other port users to further the appeal of the port as being one of the main economic hubs in the Highlands. Our entry into the renewables market has been very successful and we are now recognised as a player in that market. Our additional expansion capabilities, also allows us the opportunity to further develop to the considerable benefit of the wider Highland Region”.
