OREGON SHOREBIRD FESTIVAL Join both advanced and beginning birders alike on the Southern Oregon coast this Labor Day weekend September 1-3rd to meet and hear award winning writers and photographers Noah Strycker and Paul Bannick at the 31st Oregon Shorebird Festival. The festival is a celebration of Oregon shorebirds and an educational experience, with field trips, talks, bird watching, and shared meals. Noah Strycker is a 31-year-old writer, photographer, and bird man from Creswell, Oregon. His third book will be published in October of this year: Birding Without Borders, which accounts his 2015 quest spanning 41 countries and all seven continents as he set a world record by seeing 6,042 species of birds (more than half the birds on Earth) in one calendar year. Paul Bannick gives bird-lovers a gorgeous photographic feast and an engaging natural history lesson, while making a compelling call to preserve the habitats that sustain these most iconic of birds. In his new latest book, Owl: A Year in the Lives of North American Owls, Bannick features more than 200 images captured over several years of field work. This year’s field trips will include a pelagic trip off shore, kayak paddle tours up the South Slough, land-based trips to both Bandon and the Bay Area as well as a sea watch. Oregon Pelagic Tours will host a five-hour pelagic trip on Saturday to give participants a sense of what a day-long pelagic trip is like.

THE RUN TO THE ROGUE By Joanie McNerlin The winter of 1856 and the forced relocation of thousands of Native people remains a bitter piece of history for the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz. About 100 runners and walkers will commemorate the infamous move in the 234-mile, three-day Run to the Rogue Relay . Elders and young children will join racers for the first mile as they leave Siletz near the Oregon coast, to retrace the reverse route their ancestors from the Rogue and Umpqua valleys marched 156 years ago. Part of this run includes a community

dinner that Port Orford has provided for decades now with the help of donations and volunteers this is part of their journey. Please help me and others make this happen again this year September 9th, 2017 is the day of the event. With so much to do we need donations, food donations and volunteers to help make this a successful dinner. If you would like to donate or volunteer, please call me Joanie @332-0376 leave a message, I will return your calls ASAP. We need fish, tomatoes, lettuce, etc. Also, we need lots of desserts made for the day of the dinner. Thank you for all your support in continuing this amazing dinner. We are the only town that does this, so let’s show our Love!

PETER WRIGHT LENIHAN Peter Wright Lenihan passed away Friday, July 14, 2017 on his Elk River Ranch as a result of a bicycle accident. Peter was born in Pasadena, CA and came to the family cabin on Elk River, every summer, with his

parents and older brother, Michael, in the early 1940’s. At age 14 he decided to stay on the river and moved in with Ed and Esther Conley. He bought some caulk boots and started working in the woods with Ed, “brushing out” around trees. After serving in the Navy, stationed in San Diego, he apprenticed in a shipyard, in Copenhagen, Denmark, building boats and developed a love of woodworking. Upon returning to the States, Peter began surfing with his friend Mike Doyle and playing jazz piano at the age of 40. He embraced many disciplines including building numerous homes in California, Oregon and San Jose Del Cabo, Baja. He also built custom doors and furniture of his own designs for many clients in the USA and Mexico. At the age of 66 he built the “ Thunderbird” from Port Orford Cedar for the McKenzies. Peter also built two remarkable cable suspension bridges across Elk River to his ranch. He owned the movie theater for a period of time where he brought in well known musicians from outside the area. Peter was an enthusiastic jazz musician and aficionado of Bebop and all its trappings. Peter was a mentor to many in unconventional ways. He was perceptive and never hesitated to say what was on his mind. He is survived by his partner of 23 years, Nancy Brazil and his brother Michael Lenihan of New York. Peter was 83, he looked as if he was 60 and acted as if he was 20. In lieu of donations his friends and family request that you wear your bicycle helmet.
