Dear Editor:

My first connection with Veteran’s Day goes back to my First grade teacher. Back then (1961) we had 1 teacher and 1 classroom where we were taught everything from music to arithmetic. My First grade teacher, Mrs. Secino, taught me the most important songs that I would learn in my lifetime. Every holiday, regardless of the level of importance stamped on a calendar was respected with a song or 2 or more. Veteran’s Day was obviously one that required a couple of weeks with so many wonderful and respectful tunes. My favorite will always be, The Marine Corps Hymn. With that song in mind along came my favorite wartime movie, Battle Cry. This movie has remained my favorite and a Veteran’s Day has not passed without viewing Battle Cry at least once within the day. How could I get through Veteran’s Day without hearing Aldo Ray yell out, “Corpsman, Corpsman.”

As the years have flown by since First grade, my life would weave in and out of service to those who graciously and bravely served our country. I enjoyed many years as a volunteer with the USO and took a brief break when I married my own Marine. My Marine turned 18 in Vietnam, Decem-ber of ‘68 and his birthday gift was the TET Offensive. His older brother, by 1 year, was also there at the same time with the Army. I can only imagine how that birthday celebration rolled. Within a few years and our happy little family thriving, I felt the urge to once again give support to our Veterans. My family joined in and we became involved with a grassroots organization that began in the early 80’s focusing on Vietnam and Vietnam Era Veterans. This organization I am quite proud to say has grown into helping ALL Veteran’s and their families.

It’s been 3 years since my Marine passed. During the 23 years of our marriage, every Veteran’s Day I would quote myself with, “Hug and kiss a Vet.” This Veteran’s Day I share this quote, “Thank you to all Veterans, my respect and love to you all and God Bless you Marine, may you rest comfortably.”

Newbold:

EyesEyesAn old veteran friend of mine, Sid, passed away this last week. We spent

a lot of time doing drama together, and he taught me many things. He had been involved in theater since the days of vaudeville. He knew the old building we worked in better than anyone else, understanding its idio-syncrasies, and he shared with me more than I can ever remember. But there were other things he shared with me that meant even more than his knowledge and love of the theater.

Sid often spoke of his love for this country. A veteran of World War II, he talked about fighting in the south Pacific. One story he told me was especially memorable. They had been involved in a fierce battle on the front for many days, and when there was a slight break in the fighting, the men emerged from their fox holes to try to get food and other necessities from the supply line.

While they were above ground, they suddenly came under a heavy Japa-nese bombardment. The men made a mad dash to their fox holes. Sid and another man arrived at a fox hole at the same time, and each paused to defer to the other. But the other man grabbed Sid and threw him into the fox hole, then jumped in on top of him. In that instant, a bomb hit next to them with a deafening explosion, sending dirt and debris everywhere, and causing chaos and confusion.

When everything cleared, Sid found that the other man had been killed from the shrapnel from which he had protected Sid. When the fighting subsided for long enough that the dead could be buried, Sid tenderly car-ried his friend to where the others had been laid to be transported to the site where they would be put into simple graves.

Sid kept the man’s personal effects, hoping that if he lived through the horrors of war and returned to the country he loved, he might take those things back to the man’s family and share with them the story of his heroic life. The war continued on for a long time, but finally the day came that Japan surrendered. As Sid’s return ship neared the shores of the country for which he had served, his only thoughts were in finding the family of the man who had saved his life, and sharing with them the tale he bore in his heart.

But this was not to be an easy task with a quick ending. He was able to find out the address of the man’s family from the military records, but when he arrived there, he found they had moved, and he could find no for-warding address. He tried in desperation to find them, but to no avail. He eventually returned home, but continued his efforts to track them down. The days turned into weeks, the weeks into months, and the months into years, and still he had no luck.

Time marched on, but Sid’s desire to find the man’s family never left him. Whenever Sid shared the story he became somewhat emotional, especially as he grew older and thought he would never fulfil the promise he had made to himself. But as he was approaching his final years of life, his family decided to help him in his goal. With the Internet and other modern day tools, they started passing the word and getting friends, some who didn’t even know Sid, involved in the search.

I will never forget that day, in the summer of 2002, more than 50 years after the end of the war. We were in the middle of rehearsal for one of my plays, when a lady approached me and asked if there was a man named Sid in our cast. When I called to Sid and he came down off of the stage, the woman handed him a paper that included the phone number for his fox hole buddy’s family. When Sid read it, tears started to flow down his face.

Sid excused himself, and when he returned an hour or so later, he wore a smile. An appointment had been set and he would be going to meet the family the next month when the production ended.

What a glorious meeting he ended up having. What joy he found as he shared his story with the man’s brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews, and in turn received their gratitude and hugs. What happiness he found when his commitment had finally been fulfilled.

As I sat pondering Sid’s passing, and how much I’ll miss him, I consid-ered how fitting it was that he should leave us at this time of year. He would now be joining a faithful friend and comrade for what would truly be a Veteran’s Day reunion.

Three BananasThree Bananas Restau-

rant was rocking Wednesday night, October 30, with the trivia games going on. There were so many there in cos-tume, the room and porch was full. Marie McDowell had invited me to come down and see all the costumes. They were great. Everyone was having a good time, Amy and Jeff Haston from the Sprague House closed their doors, brought the family and joined in the fun. The three wait-resses were very busy. Hallie, Shelby and Angelica dressed as tavern girls looked cute. McDowell’s granddaughter made her costume for her. There were so many great costumes I can’t even try to name a lot of the wearers, but it was a great party.

Winn-Dixie MuralThe painting on the side of

the Winn-Dixie store done by Mrs. Delaney’s fifth and sixth period from Crescent City Jr/Sr High School was fantastic. Mike Jones will cover those festivities.

Robinson’s 69 YearsBernie and Doris Robinson

celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary with long time friends, Molly and George Morris. The Robinson’s were married in Pennsylvania, Oc-tober 8, 1944, (someone who was listening to our conver-sation said, Golly, I wasn’t even born then.) They have two sons, Dennis and David, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. This will probably be the last winter in Florida for them, they have purchased a retirement home in New York, near the boys, but we all tell them we have extra guest rooms. Bernie says we might take you up on that. They plan on getting the Good Sams Camping Club together for dinner sometime later.

Sister VisitsTi and Allan Fraser enjoyed

a visit from Ti’s twin sister Shirley and husband Tony Catanzarite from Wooster, Ohio. The girls did a little shopping and helped with the Sunday dinner after church October 27, at GFWC Cres-cent City Woman’s Club. The guys joined them for lunch where they enjoyed Jan Car-ter’s famous Pot Roast. Ti said they ate out a lot and really had a good visit. (Allan will have his train collection on the Woman’s Club Christ-mas Tour of Homes Sun-day, December 8. It is really worth the price of the tick-ets.) Tickets will be available soon from any Woman’s Club member, Putnam County Cou-rier Journal, and other places in town. I will have more on that later.

Church in the ParkPastor Larry Case and

members of Lake Como Unit-ed Methodist Church moved the morning service to the park across from the Post Of-fice on Sunday, October 13. “The weather was beautiful and showed the glory of God’s creations as the congrega-

tion worshipped under God’s blue skies,” said Pastor Case. The type of service happens about once a year. Lay Leader Yvonne Stack, read the scrip-ture. Hoyt Roberts and Jack Eichenlaub furnished the music. Pastor Case said, “If you have never worshipped in the open, it is quite an ex-perience, as they say, ‘Try it, you’ll like it.’”

Church FestivalFood, costumes and people

were part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Fall Festival. The la-dies of the church had a beautiful spread of food ta-bles set up for sit down din-ing. Angie Trunk was face painting. Branch President Darius Trunk said they prob-ably had 100 guests. He was pleased and was looking for-ward to being a host for the GFWC Crescent City Wom-an’s Club Tour of Homes in December.

Happy Birthday WilmaFriends of Wilma Kuhn

in the GFWC Crescent City Woman’s Club surprised her with a birthday luncheon. Cake, ice cream, plus a lovely lunch was supplied. Kuhn was delighted.

Farewell to BettyI lost one of my dearest

friends when Betty White lost her hard fought battle with cancer. She was one of the first friends I made when we moved here from Texas over 25 years ago. We walked on our country road, rode the five miles around Lake Como on bikes, played cards, had fish fries and played around the lake. (She didn’t swim, so she would not get in the water.) We shared foods and swapped recipes. Be happy in your new home Betty. (Say hi to Nick for me.) God Bless.

Memorial MassA special memorial mass is

schedule to be held Wednes-day, November 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Johns the Baptist Catholic Church for Betty White and Skippy McCarthy. A Shrine program is sched-uled at 10 a.m. at the church and the mass will follow the program. White had moved to Melbourne, to be near her sis-ter and brother-in-law Jamie and Greg Hanson, but she had so many friends here. Gert Gaster said Fr. Rudy thought the mass would give her friends closure and a chance to say goodbye. Ev-eryone is welcome.Silver Sneakers Luncheon

After a workout, Monday, October 8, the Silver Sneak-ers exercise class had a lun-cheon at the Putnam Family Fitness Center. After the lun-cheon, Marie Gonzalez, an Azalea Health Outreach and Enrollment worker, talked about the marketplace and health care enrollment. Her number is 386-698-1232 ex-tension 4308, if you have any questions. Dr. William Lockhart passed out cards for a free week at the Fitness Center to come and try out the facility, classes and work-outs to see if you would like to join. (The Fitness Center is lucky to have doctors on the Board, Dr. Bill and Dr. Bonnie Harrison. (But don’t ask about your sore toe or sprained ankle, they are not those kinds of doctors.) The work is moving along on the Fitness Center. Any dona-tions or volunteers are most welcome.

Reunion for Bowman’sBob and Rusty Bowman

spent four busy, fun filled days in Deland at the 50th class reunion for the 1963 Deland High School Bull-

dogs. On Friday, there was a social at the Brick House Lounge. There was also a pep rally. Some of the group rode on the Homecoming Parade Floats. Some went to Emmy’s Restaurant and Lounge where there was mu-sic and entertainment. Sat-urday, there was a picnic at one of the classmates’ home near Lake Mack, catered by Bryan’s Barbeque. Sunday morning there was a brunch at Spring Garden Ranch that was fun. There was lots of picture taking and visiting before everyone went home.Fitness Center Fundraiser

A barbeque chicken din-ner fundraiser will be held in front of Jim and Shirley Griffin’s home on Highway 17, Saturday, November 9, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. This will benefit the Putnam Family Fitness Center. ROPI LuncheonIf you are a woman living

in Crescent City, the ROPI Ladies of Crescent City Lun-cheon was the place to be and be seen last Thursday. This monthly luncheon is designed to unite all wom-en in Crescent City. We are so proud to be in a posi-tion where ladies are getting to know each other without hesitation, and share experi-ences from various cultures.

“Our group is unique, as we invite women of all ethnic groups to join us for network-ing and sharing ideas on how we, as women, can effect pos-itive change in our beautiful city,” said Angel Duke. The next luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, November 14, at 1 p.m. Contact Duke at 386-698-3096 for more in-formation. This week, the guest of honor was Felicia Benzol from Orange City. Benzol spoke on the need for communities to come to-gether and participate using collective efforts to unite the youth and promote compas-sion among us. Benzol is the director of an organization that mentors over 300 youths in partnership with various schools throughout Volusia County. Duke and Benzol will meet next week to discuss how they might form a col-laboration to further promote their programs. “We have a great group of mentors and associates right here in Cres-cent City and, I might add, the young ladies in our group are awesome!” said Duke. The group meets every Tues-day at Crescent City Jr/Sr High School at 6 p.m. in the Library/Media Center.

Dire Year for the ManateeThis year has become

the deadliest year ever for Florida’s endan-gered manatees. In to-tal, 769 manatees have died so far, from Janu-ary 1 through October 29, making it the larg-est annual manatee die-off in Florida since record-keeping began. The previous record was set in 2010 when biologists with the Florida Fish and Wild-life Conservation Com-mission documented 766 dead manatees, of which hundreds died from cold stress. With two months still to go in 2013, nearly twice the number of mana-tees has already died than died in all of 2012.

According to Dr. Katie Tripp, Save the Man-atee Club’s Director of Science and Conserva-tion, two unusual mor-tality events in 2013, coupled with the reg-ular threats manatees face on a daily basis, have been responsible for the unprecedented losses. A record num-ber of 276 manatees succumbed from expo-sure to a toxic red tide bloom in southwest Florida, centered in Lee County. Meanwhile, on Florida’s east coast, an unusual mortali-ty event claimed more than 100 manatee lives in Brevard County this year.

“This year’s re-cord-breaking mana-tee mortality is a loud and clear signal that our waterways are in trouble,” says Tripp, who explained that of the total number of manatee deaths so far this year, 123 were stillborn, newborn, or young calves less than five feet in length,

which sets another annual record for this category of mortality. Of these, at least 49 were found in Brevard County, at the epicen-ter of the unusual mor-tality event linked to a variety of algal blooms and loss of 47,000 acres of seagrass since 2010.

Patrick Rose, who is an aquatic biolo-gist and the Executive Director of the Club says, “With 2013’s catastrophic loss of manatee lives coming so close on the heels of the mass mortality suffered during 2010, the already difficult job to ensure the survival of these gentle and de-fenseless marine mam-mals has been made all the more challenging, and it’s not over yet. What we put into our waters, how much we pump from our aqui-fer and draw from our springs and rivers, to-gether with how we use our waterways, all has an impact on our own lives and the lives of every aquatic species. We must be better stewards of our waters and waterways or suf-fer even more severe consequences going forward.”

Save the Manatee Club reminds the pub-lic that November is Manatee Awareness Month in Florida – the time of year when manatees are on the move, making their way to important win-ter warm-water sites.

The Club offers a variety of ways for the public in Florida to be directly involved with manatee protec-tion during Novem-ber and throughout the year. Free public awareness waterway signage, boating ban-

ners and decals, wa-terway cards, and ed-ucational posters are produced by the Club. The bright yellow wa-terproof banner which cautions, “Please Slow: Manatees Below,” can assist in warning boat-ers to slow down for manatees who may be in the area. Shoreline property signs and matching boat decals are also available, fea-turing the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conserva-tion Commission’s ho-tline number (1-888-404-3922) for reporting sick and injured mana-tees. Boater and diver awareness posters are also available for dive shops, marinas, busi-nesses, visitor centers, classrooms and librar-ies. Family-friendly outdoor signs are pro-duced by the Club and distributed to state, municipal, and coun-ty parks, marinas, and other sites where human/manatee in-teractions can be a problem. Requests for any of these free ma-terials can be sent via e-mail to [email protected] or by calling toll free at 1-800-432-JOIN (5646).

“The public’s ongoing participation in man-atee conservation, in Florida and outside the state, is essential for the welfare and protec-tion of the species and the aquatic habitats upon which they de-pend,” says Rose.

For more information on endangered man-atees, visit the Club’s website at www.savet-hemanatee.org. Watch manatees in their nat-ural habitat on the Club’s Blue Spring webcams at manatv.org.

Every week, just before the game I head over to the field house to listen to the Raiders football play-ers talk about the game they are about to play, well that and to see in their eyes, what I use to feel 30 years ago when I was in their shoes. Friday afternoon was just like any other Friday with one exception. As I walk to the field house every week I see a young man sitting outside the locker room near the edge of the prac-tice field and he is always listing to this one song on his cell phone. Now normally I don’t bother this young man because I know he is clearing his mind and focusing on the game he’s about to play, but I couldn’t help but catch this one short verse in the song he was lis-tening to, so I decided to stand there for a second and listen to the rest of the song. I have to admit his song had more mean-ing than the song I use to listen to before my high school football games, which was by the Eagles, “Heartache Tonight.” Af-ter the game I came home and took out my notes to put everything in order for this article. Well I de-cided to go on YouTube and click on the song this young man was lis-tening to. The song is by Fort Minor, and chances are if you’re around my age then you have never heard it. The words in the first part of the song go like this, “You ready? Let’s go! Yeah! For those of you that want to know what we’re all about. It’s like this y’all. This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill, fifteen per-cent concentrated power of will, five percent plea-sure, fifty percent pain, and a hundred percent reason to remember the name…” I’m not going to mention his name but let me say this, his “pump me up song, had to of worked because this kid was on key all night.

Around 2:30 p.m., the Raiders headed over

to the First Presbyteri-an Church in Crescent City where they enjoyed a home cooked meal. Pas-tor McCoy, Doug Wills and Wally Learner (who was the cook) served up the meal while Mu-riel Kuhn and Carolyn Smith served the young men drinks. The meal consisted of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, gravy, peas with carrots, a bis-cuit and to top it off, cake smothered in black-berries. Coach Smith and the team wanted me to tell Pastor McCoy and his staff, “Thank you and it was the bomb!”

After arriving back at the school, Coach Smith and his staff went over some plays. As they walked through the differ-ent plays I decided to take out my camera and get a few shots for the Putnam County Courier Journal Facebook page. As I was taking some shots, I hap-pened to notice that Ryne Beasley had on a t-shirt with the Superman logo on the front of it and I made the comment, “So are you planning on be-ing Superman tonight?” he replied, “Oh yea, wait till you see me fly.” I just smiled and continued to take pictures.

I arrived at the Taylor High School football field and, because of traffic, I had to park outside of the school and run to the football field. As I got to the end zone the Raiders were making their way down the field and before I could get my camera out, they were at the goal line. Now here is one of the times in my life that I wish I could rewind 10 seconds backwards, just to get a picture. Beasley, #15, yells, “One Omaha, two Omaha, hut, hut,” then fades back into the pocket. He looks around, everyone is covered, then the front line opens up a small hole just big enough for Beasley to take five running steps, then he launches himself into the air, taking flight like Su-perman and lands about five feet over the goal line. Raiders 7, Taylor 0 with Abner Brito, #28, hitting it through the uprights. As Beasley ran passed me he said, “Hey Coach I told you, I’m Super-man!” Indeed he did, kind of makes me wonder if he still had the Super-man shirt on under his uniform. Next up Dillon Dunnigan, #2, pulls out his TD with a catch while in the air, backwards hanging on to the ball as

he slams the turf. Now I’m wondering, “What was in that food the church served them?” The score was Raiders 13, Taylor 0. Brito would miss the extra point which is only his second miss all year. So in my book the kid is doing great.

Taylor would answer back with a TD and extra point making the score, Raiders 13, Taylor 7. That would be the only score Taylor put on the board all night. Next Derrick Rasher, #10, would run 50 yards with Taylor dead on his heels, unable to catch him. Score Raiders 20 Taylor 7. Again Brito’s extra point was good.

Now it was time for Dadrian Ellis, #8, to score and Brito to make it Raid-ers 27, Taylor 7. I’m tell-ing you, the Raiders were on fire with Derrick Rash-er, #10, and Brito slap-ping another seven points on the board, making the score Raiders 33, Taylor 7.

It was almost the end of the game, but that didn’t seem to bother Super-man Beasley who inter-cepted a Taylor pass and would deliver it to Rasher, where he ran it to the end zone. With another one through the uprights by Brito, the score would be Raiders 40, Taylor 7. The last TD for the night would be when Ronkyysh Grant, #52, would recov-er a fumble and run it into the end zone, the buzzer sounded and the game was over making the final score, Raiders 46, Taylor 7.

Now I want to say this before I move on here. I was asked by some of the fans if I was going to be writing about a couple of guys on the Taylor team who did a couple of cheap shots on the Raiders and I have even gotten emails from some of the fans asking the same ques-tion. The answer is, “No!” Nor will I bash the coach-ing staff at Taylor. Look guys, it’s like this, these young men are out there going at each other and, yes, tempers will flair, es-pecially when it is your Homecoming game and you’re trailing in points. I have met a couple of the coaches at Taylor and they have a fine coaching staff, all that happened was you had a couple of guys that were having a bad night, so let’s just leave it at that.

Now this brings me to my last point in this ar-ticle, the coaches. Being a coach last year, I got

to see some things that most people never see and that’s the coaches behind the scenes. Un-like college or pro coaches who make millions a year, high school coaches don’t make squat, yet I have seen Coach Smith and his coaching staff at the high school field house every Sunday afternoon way before football sea-son ever started and ev-ery Sunday during last season and this season watching films and com-ing up with new plays trying to figure out how to have a winning sea-son. It doesn’t stop there either; they also wash all the football uniforms af-ter each game, as well as practice uniforms. I have watched these coaches pool their money togeth-er and buy kids food so they would have some-thing to eat after prac-tice. Last year, they also helped with some Christ-mas gifts for a few of the kids who might not have had a Christmas, and all this is done on what little money they make.

It doesn’t stop there ei-ther, these coaches are not just coaches who babysit our kids, and they are mentors who shape their lives, instilling good qualities in their minds. I have watched kids for the last year and a half walk up to all the coaches and ask their advice on things in their personal lives. Each week I have watched Coach Smith put a chair in the middle of the room and ask one player to sit down in the middle of the rest of the Raiders team. As this young man sits down in the chair, Coach Smith will toss them the football and say, “Why do you want to play football for this team?” I remem-ber one young man this past season who sat in the chair and answered the question, I want to share his response with you now. With tears in his eyes this young man looked around the room and said, “Coach, this is my family and they are all I have!” As the tears streamed down his face he told of the problems he was facing in his life and how hard life was on him, as well as his sin-gle mother and brothers and sisters. Let me tell you, I was choked up, as was the rest of the room. Afterwards, I saw Coach Smith and his staff one by one comfort this young man. That’s one of the reasons I want to intro-duce the Raiders coach-

ing staff to you right now. Coach Smith is the head coach, Coaches Sander-sfield (offensive line), Coach Proctor (defensive line), Coach Williams (defensive coordinator), Coach Thomas (lineback-ers), Coach Cook (train-er), and Coach Evans (assistant coach). Coach Evans was not there the day I took the picture.

I take my hat off to these men who sacrifice time with their families and friends to help shape and mold these young Raiders lives. You gentle-men may not get paid a million a year or get the recognition you deserve, but if it were not for men like you, the million dol-lar coaches would not exist. You coaches may never know what differ-ence you’ve made in these

young men’s lives, but trust me, there isn’t one kid on that team that you haven’t influenced for the better. Thank you coach-es.

Okay next week is the last game of the season, except for the playoff game which will be played at home. This week’s game is an out of town game, held in Orlando against First Academy. I think there will be a fan bus going to the game, but I won’t know until Wednesday, at which time I will post it on the Putnam County Courier Journal Facebook page. Well that about does, it only two things left to say and that is, Congratula-tions Raiders for your dis-trict championship and GO RAIDERS!

Gary Woods, Lt. Col. of the United States Air Force-Retired, was the featured speaker at the October, St Johns River Chapter, Military Officer Association of America (MOAA) meeting. Woods told the members of his childhood “love of flying” and subsequent check out in a crop duster Stea-rman, to his successes as a Special Project manager for the Surgeon General of the United States Air Force.

Chapter President Ken Hinton opened the meet-ing with Chapter Chaplin Bill Darden giving the in-vocation and then leading the chapter in to Pledge of Allegiance to the Unit-ed States. New members Bud and Judy Surratt were welcomed. George Crawford reminded mem-bers that the chapter would march and ride as desired in the Veteran’s Day Parade being held Monday, November 11. “We will meet at 0930 on Oak Street where it in-tersects with 11th Street. We will have one 1984 Cadillac Sedan and one rear seating pickup truck for riders. Marchers will carry the banner, and ev-eryone, please wear your uniform,” said Crawford. Any veteran regardless of rank is invited to walk or

ride with the chapter. Fran Martin is order-ing magnetic signs for the vehicles. Martin also outlined the Jan-uary planning for the recruit new members newspaper ads. Trea-surer Joff Filion re-minded members the annual chapter dues of $25 can be paid now.

Woods enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1956 and served as a medic. Upon discharge he entered the Univer-sity of Georgia on the GI bill, joined the Army Reserve, and worked his way through college as a nurse. At graduation, he was awarded a commission in the US Army Reserve. In 1985, he was contacted by the USAF Surgeon General and requested to transfer to become a Special Proj-ect Officer.

His mission was to re-solve the severe problem of pilots aging, and re-quiring glasses by which to see all the instruments and switches scattered throughout every cock-pit, including above the windshield. The flying crew’s instrument cross-check required the ability to very quickly scan all flight instruments, and to provide flight control re-sponses to movement of the aircraft. Wood’s mis-

sion included pilots and air crews of the USAF, the USAF Reserve and the Air Guard flight personnel. Second priority was those individuals who crewed the aircraft, but did not fly the aircraft. Both the US Navy and the US Army also had similar require-ments and each service had a Special Project Of-ficer assigned to resolve this dilemma.

By 1988, this challenge had been met and over-come by the use of spe-cial contact lenses, re-designed oxygen masks and flight helmets. Woods then took on the need for USAF Special Oper-ations helicopter pilots

and crews to operate at tree top level, total dark-ness and no light emit-ting from the aircraft. Night vision goggles that were in use then did not permit this mission need. By 1991, and the Des-ert Storm conflict against the Iraqi, the problem had been met also and overcome through new-ly designed, enhanced equipment and training. Mission complete!

President Hinton an-nounced the November meeting would be held on Tuesday, November 19, at Beef O’Bradys at the usual 11:30 a.m. time.

Photo Special to the Courier JournalPresident Ken Hinton thanks Gary Woods for his outstanding service to the United States Air Force and our country.

November 6, 2013 COURIER JOURNAL Section B

I didn’t come out too bad on my prediction a couple of weeks ago. The Red Sox and Cardinals would be in a seven game series with the Sox the winners. It was based on my preference only, be-cause the clubs were so evenly matched. That was true for the first three games when the Cards split the first two, then took game three in St. Louis. Strangely enough, it was the Boston pitching that prevailed from then on rather than that of the Cardinals. John Lester beat Wainright twice and John Lackey hung tough, leading game two then being pulled, only to see St. Louis rally for a close victory and then winning the final game six out-right. I really believed that the Cardinal pitching with Wacha and Clark following Wainright would hold the Sox down, but that was not the case. Wa-cha, only 22, had an impressive game two win. He threw consistently in the 90’s relying on his fastball almost entirely to blow batters out. Then when he got shaky with his control in game six, you saw what happened; the Red Sox got him out of there pretty quickly and basically coasted home in a 6-2 game. I guess you could say that the Red Sox pitching experience came out on top. Although, it was surprising that Lackey was so ef-fective when he had some touch periods during the regular season. What he did against the Cards was to mix his speeds up coupled with excellent control. I was sort of surprised that he threw his fastball in the 90 mph range so often. This series was a case where the winner led their division throughout the year in what had to be the tough-est division in MLB, established themselves as the best in the American League with a six game vic-tory over the Detroit Tigers, no slouches for sure and never choked, but played as the favorites and won it all. Only the Yankee dynasty of the 80s and 90s did that regularly.

What happened this past Saturday in college football could be described as a “mixed bag” with surprise all over the place. I thought, however, that FSU’s route of Miami was not a surprise and that Las Vegas had the spread of 20 points right. After all, Miami had to go into overtime a couple of weeks ago to beat Wake Forest, not exactly a top 25 ranked team. Miami was just overrated, just as the Florida Gators were, coming into the season. Unfortunately, the number eight ranking came late in the season when an 8-0 record that has everybody pumped up. The Seminoles “toyed” the Hurricanes for a half and led only by seven because of a couple of uncharacteristic intercep-tions thrown by Jameis Winston. Believe me, this was a scrimmage for FSU during the last half and probably should have been called at the end of the third quarter. It wasn’t and you saw what hap-pened. Miami’s top running back broke his ankle in the fourth quarter and is out for the year. Kerry Dunning, who swoons over the Seminoles in her Palatka Daily News column (which should be ti-tled “as long as FSU wins, I’m happy”) would no doubt have a different take on the “called at the end of the third quarter” remark, and I wouldn’t blame her. Florida’s loss to Georgia was a pain-ful one for me, the ever optimist when it comes to the Gators’ fortunes. I hate it when witnessing those Georgia fans hop up and down as if they had hot coals in their britches. That means a “sil-ver britches” victory is pending. During the last eight and a half minutes of Saturday’s game, when Georgia ran the clock out and prevented the Ga-tors from handing them a fourth loss, I sort of lost it. One bright thing about the Gators’ play was the comeback mentality, which they displayed. No ex-cuses. They lost to a better team on Saturday, but they could still become “bowl eligible” with a vic-tory over Vanderbilt (which beat Georgia) and that other soft team just before the FSU game. On the other hand, South Carolina can be had and then there’s that Tallahassee crew.

Helping This Holiday Season - It’s that time of year again. The holiday season is already upon us, and we see the signs of it in every store we enter. Palatka Christian Service Center, Inc. is looking for people to sponsor families for Thanksgiving baskets. The spon-sor can either donate food for us to make up the bas-ket or make the basket themselves. Also, they can purchase pre-made dinners from one of our local gro-cery stores for the families to pick up. Email [email protected] for details on becoming a sponsor.

The Hardly Used Boutique A.K.A (The H.U.B.) is in need of donations for the store. Especially winter clothing, furniture, household items, blankets, chil-dren’s clothing & toys, jackets, sweaters, etc. Also, we have a bargain bin with clearance items for all you can put in a bag for $1.
