FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2010 25 CENTS SERVING SUNNYSIDE-WOODSIDE AND LONG ISLAND CITY GRAFFITI FIGHTING COUPLE IN WOODSIDE By Shannon Carlin If Joe McGowan sees graffiti, he takes care of it right away. Whether it’s on the lamppost or the mailbox or his neighbor’s garage door. On at least one occasion McGowan’s gone out at 5 o’clock in the morning to remove something. Even though he missed a few spots in the darkness, he says to stop graffiti you have to take it down immediately. “It’s like that game Win For Life, ‘You keep living, we’ll keep paying,’“ McGowan explains. “Well, they keep writing and I keep taking it off.” Since 1974, Joe and his wife, Theresa have lived in the same house on 60 th Street in Woodside. They’ve dedicated themselves to cleaning up their neighborhood by taking time to do the little things like sweeping up their street, requesting better garbage cans and planting flowers in the spring. Though it’s a 24-hour, 7-days a week volunteer job, the couple, who are now in their 60s, are happy to do it. Especially if it means they can be proud of where they live, something Theresa says is a direct effect of growing up poor in Ireland. “We just appreciate every- thing that we have worked for,” she said. “And we work really hard to keep it.” In recent years, the McGowan’s felt like Woodside had been neglected. It seemed like there was never any funding or like people just didn’t care to clean up after themselves. But Theresa is hopeful that Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer can help turn things around. By the spring, she’d like to see a block association start up. Not just to help control the graffiti, a consistent problem in the area, but a chance to bring everyone in the com- munity together. “Just 15 minutes each day could help make things better for our kids and grandkids,” Theresa said. In the meantime, Joe will keep working. Painting over any graffiti he sees as soon as he sees it. “Someone has to give in at the end,” he says. “And I won’t give up.” UNITED FORTIES LOCAL SCOUTS TOUR AROUND NORTHWEST QUEENS By Peter Ross, Photos by Thomas Varga ( continued on page 5 ) This fall season Boy Scout Troop 390 of the Sunnyside-Woodside area has been sighted all over Northwest Queens, coming off of a very well attended summer camp stint in mid- August. OLD FRIENDS OF PS 150On June 6, 1966, Mrs. Kay

Armstrong, the first AfricanAmerican teacher at PS150,suggested to her a 5th gradeclass that they meet for a re-union on 7/7/77. While this re-union never happened, forty-

four years later, on 10/10/10,ten classmates met at Bliss Bis-tro in Sunnyside to share memo-ries of Mrs. Armstrong, PS 150education and Sunnyside’sthriving Jewish community ofthe 1960s. They swapped pho-

FROM SHIST TO SHINING SEABy Patricia Dorfman, Photos by Luke Adams

Take Steps to Help “Immunize” Your PortfolioNow that winter is almost

here, you probably see “Flu ShotsAvailable” signs at many of yourlocal pharmacies. Whether or notyou decide to get a flu shot de-pends on your individual situa-tion, of course, but you may ben-efit from the idea of immuniza-tion in other areas of your life —such as your investments.

Specifically, you may wantto help “immunize” your port-folio, as much as possible, against some of the volatilitywe’ve seen in the financial mar-kets over the past couple of years. How can you do this? Here are afew suggestions:

Diversify, diversify, diver-sify. If you were to only ownstocks, your portfolio would, attimes, see some big gains — butat other times, you’d take somebig hits. If you just owned bonds, you’d probably see fewer fluc-tuations than if you just ownedstocks — but you’d almost cer-tainly never get the gains youneed to help achieve your goals. If you kept all your money incash instruments, you’d protectyour principal, but you’d even-tually lose ground to inflation. In short, you can’t succeed as aninvestor by putting all yourmoney in one type of asset. Youneed to spread your resourcesamong stocks, bonds, and cash

investments. And even withineach of these categories, youneed to diversify. For example, try to own a mixture of growthstocks and income-producingstocks; short-term and long-termbonds; and a variety of cash in-struments. While diversification,by itself, can’t guarantee profitsor protect against loss, it cangive you opportunities for po-tential success and help shieldyou from severe downturns that,at any given time, primarily af-fect just one asset class.

Know your risk tolerance. Ifyou frequently find yourself sur-prised, or perhaps dismayed, atthe fluctuations in your portfo-lio, you may be overestimatingyour risk tolerance. If you fa-miliarize yourself with your in-vestments before you buy them— and you should — then youprobably shouldn’t be surprisedat how they perform. So, if youown growth-oriented stocks, you need to accept the inevi-table short-term volatility in ex-change for potential gains overthe long term. But if you’re con-stantly worried over temporarysetbacks, you may be taking ontoo much risk for your comfortlevel. If this happens, you mayneed to rebalance your portfo-lio to better accommodate yourtrue risk tolerance.

Maintain adequate cash re-serves. Having sufficient cashin your portfolio can help youcombat volatility in at least twoways. First, since cash essen-tially doesn’t fluctuate in price— though it may lose value overtime, relative to inflation — itsvery presence can help stabilizeyour portfolio. And second, ifyou have enough cash in yourinvestment mix, you may be lesslikely to dip into your long-terminvestments to pay for short-term needs, such as a major carrepair, a new furnace and so on— and the less you disrupt yourinvestments, the more progressyou can make toward your goals.

It’s not possible to fullyshield your investments fromvolatility all the time. But bytaking the steps describedabove, and by maintaining along-term perspective, you canstrengthen your portfolio’s re-sistance, and improve your ownresponses, to the effects of pricefluctuations. And that’s ahealthy way to invest.

Ira Greenberg with President of MTA Capital Construction,Michael Horodniceanu.

BIGWIG FROM BIG RIGDIG: The November 9 Luncheonspeaker Michael Horodniceanu,Pres. of Metropolitan Transporta-tion Authority (MTA) Capital Con-struction. Horodniceanu, a notedscholar of engineering, displayedan admirable boyish fascinationwith his task, which is excavatingthe largest underground mined fa-cility ever in the US. East SideAccess is the rail project furtherlinking Grand Central Station andQueens, with 1,225 million cubicyards of excavated rock & soil com-ing out, 60,000 tons of steel &390,000 cubic yards of concretegoing in, and featuring gigantictunneling machines resembling sci-ence fiction. A reduction of auto-mobile travel is estimated at a pos-sible 500,000 miles per day withassociated decrease in pollution.

SO LONG SUNNYSIDE STA-TION??: Guests at the monthlyevery-2nd-Tuesday luncheons atDazies Restaurant learned thatSunnyside Station, the terminal tobe at the Queens Boulevard Bridgebetween Skillman and QueensPlaza is no longer part of East SideAccess. The project is scheduled tocomplete in 2016 at a cost of 7.6billion dollars. Reasons for jetti-soning the local station were bud-get cuts and lack of nearby need.

Ira Greenberg, Chamber Presi-dent noted after the meeting thatthis station is necessary in order forthe greater Long Island City/Sunnyside area to reach its fullpotential. “With all the plannedcommercial and business develop-

ment in Long Island City a LongIsland Rail Road station wouldmake sense as this part of the city isfastly becoming a downtown.Direct rail access using the capac-ity of the LIRR could reduce thetraffic congestion resulting fromthe increases development,” saidGreenberg who is also a member ofthe MTA Board. “The need maybe a few years off but we should beadvocating for funding now to buildthis station.”

(This author’s opinion is thatwhile this means that we will loseout on being the second hub ofLIRR, Amtrak, and the MTA, weput off worrying about the possibledownside of a massive station; morecongestion, infrastructure strain andthose alarming rumors of buildingover the historic Sunnyside Yards.)

OUR OWN WONDER OFTHE WORLD: Sunnysiders andWoodsiders have become as blaséas Manhattanites about this amaz-ing feat of engineering occurring140 feet below. The bowtied andprofessorial Mr. Horodniceanu de-scribed creative problem solvingneeded as the project continues asplans meet the reality. Engineershave devised a nifty solution tobuilding through the softer earthunder a portion of underneathNorthern Boulevard; freezing ofbrine in a network of undergroundpipes in order to stabilize the earthlong enough to build tunnelsthrough it. (We hope on defrostingday, we have all said our prayers.)The Sunnyside Chamber wangleda promise of an underground tour

for the winner of Chamber “RailTour” launch contest, which oc-curring in 2011. For more informa-tion on East Side Access, see http://www.mta.info/capconstr/esas/construction_update.htm

KEEPING TO THE NORWE-GIAN THEME: Also guest speak-ing were Sandy D’Gabriel of CarberTravel and Meg Daly, a charmingbooster for Norwegian Cruise line(Mr. Horodniceanu was born inNorway.) Former Don Bar Travelagent, now Marketing Director LukeAdams is putting an August 21fundraising cruise to Bermuda to-gether and Lily Gavin and RigoCardoso have already signed up. Irajoked that the cruise ship the Nor-wegian Gem is so big that even “ifyou want to go on the cruise butavoid other Chamber members, itwill be possible.” The most power-ful lure for those considering thecruise is one Ms. Daly noted; unlikethe current exhausting drill of airtravel, your vacation will begin theinstant you have boarded in NYC.

SOCIAL NETWORKINGFOR DUMMIES: Continuing theprevious Chamber topic fromShawn Slevin, local social mediaguru Amy Manning has volunteeredto address the chamber on how busi-nesses can promote through venuessuch as Facebook and Twitter. Many of our businesses alreadysuccessfully employ those meth-ods, and Amy as guest speaker willgive the rest of us a class. CarolynMaloney is scheduled to speak atthe January 8 Luncheon.

Sandy D’ Gabriel from Carber Travel, new Chamber member RealtorSwain Weiner of Massey Knakal, Lily Gavin, & Ira Greenberg.Seated: Meg Daly, NCL Cruise Line & Patricia Dorfman.

September saw the official start of theTroop program year and a visit for the firsttime in years by the Troop to the LaGuardiaKiwanis Club’s Kids Day Event held atLaGuardia Airport where the boys had achance to climb aboard a number of differentaircraft and emergency vehicles and speak toPolice, Fire, EMS, military and airport per-sonnel who operate these apparatus.

October was a busy month for the boysbeginning with October 2nd and the set-up,clean up and beverage table operation dur-ing the Feast of St. Teresa Dinner/Socialheld at the Troop’s home base, St. Teresa’sRC Church in Woodside.

The following week-end saw the scoutsroughing it up at Alpine Scout Camp inAlpine, New Jersey where they worked onvarious scout skills while having a generalgood time close to nature. Scout skills andtime out in nature were again the theme onthe 16th at Forest Park in Richmond Hill,Queens, where Troop 390 attended the 10th

Annual Queens Borough Orienteering Eventhosted by Troop 17 and longtime Scoutingstalwart Ralph DeFalco and his crew. Vari-ous short sessions were held in the morningon map reading, compass and orienteeringbasics, and GPS caching (introduced byJohn Pritchard) in preparation for the three-orienteering courses, which were laid outthroughout the park. The courses ranged

from 2.0 to 3.7 kilometers in length, with a60-meter elevation and between 10 and 12control points per course. The “390 boys”,split into two groups, were the only ones tochallenge the Orange course, the hardestoffered that day. The younger boys beat outthe more experienced scouts on this dayshowing that on any given day anyone canprevail with the proper patience, a good setof eyes, avoiding that one “wrong turnaround”, and not running past the controlpoints (literally).

November 7th found members of theAmerican Bulldog, Dragon and FlamingGriffin Patrols joining a larger group ofScouts and other volunteer groups in LongIsland City for the Queens leg of the YorkCity Marathon. Placed between the Pulaskiand Queensborough bridges, the scouts andother volunteers cheered on the runners andmanned the major water station circa mile14 of the event as the bulk of the runnerspassed by to complete their 26.2-mile trek.Ponchos, T-shirts and other items were givento the boys as thanks for their participationin this annual extravaganza. Looking aheadfor the Troop to the end of the year are apossible overnight camping trip to PouchScout Camp in Staten Island, an ice skatingtrip in Bryant Park, the St. Teresa’s HolidayTree Lighting Event, and their semi-annualAwards Ceremony/Parents Night.

PRICING UNDER PRESSUREDeciding on an asking price for you home is challenging enough

these days, but you need specific pricing strategies for particularscenarios, especially if you’re under pressure to move quickly or yourhome isn’t selling after being on the market for several months. Hereare suggestions for both situations.

If you’re facing a deadline due to job relocation or other reasons, then you need to price competitively, even more competitively thanexpected in today’s market. You’ll need to list at significantly lessthan your competition. Think 15% less. That may seem tough tostomach, but it’s better than continuing your monthly loan paymentsor the hassle of trying to find tenants to rent your home.

If your home has been listed for some time, but not generatinginterest, you’ll need to lower your price. Of the three elements thatsell a home- price, location, and condition-price is the one you’ll havethe most control over.

If home values have declines in your neighborhood, the price youoriginally listed at a few months ago may now be too high and out ofline with comparable listings. Now would be the time to have yourreal estate agent prepare a new Comparative Market Analysis (CMA)and reevalutate your pricing strategy. If you’ve got to sell, and sellnow, price it like you mean it.

Dear Editor,

I usually use the cut-through’s in Sunnyside Gardens when I amgoing to the shopping area on 48th Street. Recently, I have noticedsigns on the gates to the cut-throughs between 44th and 45th Streets, which read “PRIVATE PROPERTY, RESIDENTS ONLY.”

I thought these cut-throughs were open to the public and forpedestrian access from one block to the next. Are these cut-throughsonly supposed to be used by the residents of Sunnyside Gardens?

J. Downing,Sunnyside

Dear Editor,

As a resident of Sunnyside for over 45 years, I am writing to youon behalf of a very fine resident, Roja Shah, who has opened a dogtraining boarding and adoption school at ‘Dog Guru’ School, on 43rd

Street in Woodside.Roja does amazing work on rescue dogs, mistreated or difficult to

train and then offers them for adoption. I myself have personally usedhis training for my Boston terrier “Chauncy” and could not haveasked for a better dog.

Roja could use additional clients and I truly feel he is an excellentaddition to our community.

Sincerely,Mary F. Mahoney
