To better support our parishioners who experience hearing loss, we

have an Assistive Listening System available, which can be used in the Church and Geary Hall. If you have telecoil-equipped hearing aids or cochlear implants you would use the neck loop plugged into the receiver body pack, after switching your hearing aids to the tcoil setting. If you do not have hearing aids or no telecoil setting, the alternative is to plug headphones or ear buds into the receiver body pack. The neck loop, headphones and receivers need to be checked out—can use your own headphones or ear buds. Please see an Usher or Sacristan.

WELCOME THE COMMUNITY

Dear Parishioners, The imagery within the Prophet Baruch’s writing and Luke’s gospel is topographical in theme. The unevenness of the metaphorical landscape will be replaced by a straight path without the “obstacle course” approach to reach one’s destination. Comparatively, getting to God will be a straight “shot” to Jesus, the Messiah, the Christos, (Anointed One), who comes to fulfill both the Old Law and the Prophets. John the Baptist serves as the herald of the Word yet to arrive. He lays out for the people of his day the pastoral style of the Messiah so that they will not fail to recognize Him. John’s physical appearance is described in the gospel of Matthew, which is a throwback to the appearance of the prophets who were active and called from the 9th-5th century B.C. So, John’s attire and message are very new, given that 400 years worth of Jews had been waiting for a Messiah with a sense of slumber and apathy, as the wait had created a general spiritual lethargy. We know that God’s “time” and our time are measured in dramatically different ways. John’s dramatic arrival and message are designed to give his community a straight access to God Incarnate. Our upcoming anniversary of Christ’s First Coming is meant for us to once again spend these Advent weeks practicing the art of patient waiting. It is incumbent on all ages not to lose heart that Jesus’ Second Coming is a deception or humanly engineered. Jesus Himself declares that His return is imminent. Our response is to keep a spiritual vigil, all the while fulfilling the good work that God has begun in us! —Father Gary Thomas

Advent Bible Study Bible Study continues. For Advent, we are looking at the foretelling of Jesus’ coming and second coming, as described in the prophetic books and the

Revelation of John, making connections between prophetic imagery and that used in Revelation. We will gather in the Parish Center on Tuesdays (12/11, and 12/18); there will be a morning option (9:00-10:15 AM) and an evening one (7:00-8:15 PM.).

Advent Giving Tree The Advent Giving Tree will be decorated with Christmas gift requests for (1) Casa de Clara, a Dorothy Day Catholic Worker Home; (2) Sacred Heart Community Services (SHCS), an outreach program for the poor, and (3) the “Safe Car Park” participants.

For Casa de Clara, blue star ornaments, we are asking for both personal items and gift cards for the women and their children who are residing at the Catholic Worker home in downtown San Jose. On each blue star is the recipient’s first name and age. Please attach the blue star to the gift. Gifts do not need to be wrapped.

For the SHCS, gold & silver ornaments, we are asking for gifts that are generic in nature and should not be wrapped. The gold star ornaments address the pressing winter needs of the SHCS program, namely diapers, infant formula, jackets/coats, sleeping bags, and pop-top canned food items. The silver star ornaments request Christmas gifts for people of all ages whom SHCS serves. Some silver star ornaments are also requests for gift cards.

For the “Safe Car Park”, red star ornaments, we are asking for a gas gift card for the participants.

Please bring all gifts to Mass on the weekend of December 16th.

Ask the Holy Spirit to Help You Do you know someone who might be interested in exploring the Catholic faith? Or someone who would like to prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation or Holy Eucharist? With the power of the Holy Spirit the followers of Jesus did amazing things. Why not ask the Holy Spirit to help you speak to your friend or acquaintance about the Catholic faith? For more information about the process of becoming Catholic, contact Jeannine Leichner at: [email protected] or call (408)867-3634 x 505 or pick up a brochure in the pamphlet rack.

Safe Car Park Update The Safe Car Park began on Saturday, December 1st. Our guests were pleased with the location and the welcome they received. The quiet and beauty has been a wonderful gift. On Tuesday, our Youth Ministry kicked off the first dinner we served. The food was plentiful and delicious. The team provided a variety of Chili and cornbread. Warm food for a cold wet evening! If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please check out the information on the Act as Christians page of our parish website. If you are interested in preparing and hosting a meal for our guests, please contact Janice at (408) 867-3634 x556

Advent Prayer Service Monday, December 10 7:00 PM in the church

Join us this Monday evening for a reflection on the events that led up to the birth of the Messiah. From Jesus existing as the WORD, Mary saying yes to God’s

call, Zechariah receiving news that Elizabeth would bear a son, and to Simeon and Anna as they waited patiently in prayer to see the child Jesus, we join them on this meditative “Pathway to Christmas”.
