Please turn in your pancake Money. Still looking for the last of the Pancake money to come in so if

you are one of the few please turn it into Kris Meinhard or John Core. There is a rumor names of

those with funds out may soon be published, just a rumor so far.

Farm Progress Show

The board has authorized us to work one Ice Cream and Soda booth at the show. It will take 2 people at 2 shifts per day and the show is the last week of August.

Camp OK and Donated Treats

Gary and Sharon Wade delivered three campers to this week’s Camp OK (Olumpia Kiwanis) on Sunday at the Boone Y Camp.

Camp OK is a week long camping experience which began as a talented and gifted camp, but has evolved into one for campers who might not otherwise be able to attend a camp this summer. It is aimed at 5th and 6th graders.

This year’s campers just completed fifth grade at Sawyer Elementary School. They are Carla Perez, Joy Unquec and Shelby Fisher whose brother and father are currently serving in Korea).

Camp OK is fully-funded by Nebraska-Iowa District, Kiwanis clubs, Kiwanians and friends of Kiwanis. About 90-105 campers attend annually.

We sponsor three youngsters each summer. Camperships were endowed by Jean Hempstead, Wally and Jan Scholerke and one by the club.

The campers need to be picked up at the Camp at 11am next Friday 9June 8th) and returned home. Due to his recent heart attack and limited luggage-lugging ability, Gary was wondering if someone else might be able to bring the kids home.

We sponsored the treats for Monday night at the camp and Kris Meinhard donated 10 dozen cookies, Gary Wade donated 10 Dozen cookies and President Cynthia Gaunt donated 3 dozen cookies. Thanks to all for the assistance. (Pictures at the end of the bulletin.)

The Kiwanis Foundation serves the children of Ames by providing college scholarships to high school seniors who excel in serving our community and who require financial assistance to further their education. Please return your pledge card with a generous donation. Contact President Cynthia or Club Treasurer Kris Meinhard for details.

Kiwanis International has expanded their definition of a make up for missing a regular meeting: Contact Geri Derner for details.

Web Site: Club Webmaster Bud Everett, in coordination with our Board of Directors, has built a new club web site, using a new internet service. The page looks great and will serve us well as an updated version of our old system. Type into the browser address bar:

www.amesnoonkiwanis.org.

To all you cell phone aficionados, I have redesigned our Kiwanis Club website to be cell phone friendly. At least it works great on my Samsung Galaxy F7; you just have to get used to how to move around and find everything.

To you computer heads like me, it works exactly how it did before, it just has a different look.

Hope you all like the new look - it had to change to accommodate cell phones, tablets, etc. (Ah! Always trying to catch up with new technology).

Roster: Go to “Member Login” on our web site. Login with your email address & your password. Click on “Members” in the left-side navigation column if you have trouble signing in as I have had this past week contact our Webmaster Bud Everett and he can get you straightened out.

Aluminum. Bud Everett reminds us to pull the tabs off our cans at the meetings and he will

collect them for Ronald McDonald House.

Between that and Gary Wade's heart attack after boarding the cruise ship in Alaska a few weeks ago, maybe we should all think twice before going on vacation! Healing wishes to both of these fine people. Fingers crossed

for the people traveling to KI Convention in Vegas in a few short weeks.

Kiwanis International Convention.

It will be held in Las Vegas this year beginning June 28 to July 1st. Early Bird Registration has ended. is still going on now at a cost of $150. The club has funds budgeted to assist members go-ing to the convention so sign up now. Five are attending so far Geri Derner, Cathy Krebs, Mike and Marla Miller and President Cynthia Gaunt. Our delegates were selected at the last Board Meeting and are Cynthia Gaunt and Marla Miller.

Aktion Club

Next meeting on June 6th will be an Ice Cream Social 3:30pm treats 4:00pm meeting.

Cathy Krebs and Geri Derner tag teamed for the program on America's Favorite Pas-time - BASEBALL!

Round one, or shall we say first inning, was filled with baseball trivia. Each correct answer earned a tootsie roll and the table with the most tootsie rolls earned a box of Cracker Jack for each person at the table. Steve Jones got a bonus box of Cracker Jack because he was clearly the most schooled on this important subject. Gary Wade was awarded a bag of Big League Chew (bubble gum) for sporting the best baseball attire and also being quite knowledgeable on baseball trivia..

Some of the most interesting baseball Q & A include:

• The 60 MLB teams play 162 games each in a season.

• There are 108 red laces stitches on an official MLB baseball.

• Iowan Bob Feller threw the fastest pitch at 107 mph.

• The oldest stadium still in use is Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox opened in 1912.

• The Chicago Cubs was the last team to install lights and allow night games in 1988 at Wrigley Field.

• An average MLB game uses 70 balls, each is only good for 5 - 7 pitches.

• The distance between bases is 90 feet and the pitcher's mound is 60.5 feet from the back tip of home plate.

• The Designated Hitter hits for the pitcher. • Umpires are required to wear black underwear - presumably so they do not need to interrupt the

game in the event they split their pants.

The second inning was a "pitch" to encourage attendance at the NE/IA District Convention in Des

Moines on August 10-11. The theme is "Grand Slam for Success" building on the baseball theme.

There are several differences with this convention:

• starts on Friday at noon rather than Saturday morning - option to register for one or both days

• several interesting speakers and entertainment

• outing to the Miracle League for some evening games with league players - concessions stand and food trucks available for dinner purchase

• 3 training breakout sessions with 8 options each - Kiwanis leadership, personal development or just plain fun, including Gary Wade sharing "Golden Age of Comics"

• 1 roundtable session to energize you about Kiwanis CLE officer training for Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers

Our club hitting coach, Cathy Krebs, will share more details about the workshops and speakers in the

coming weeks to encourage you to participate. Every member should have already received the regis-

tration materials via email. They are also available on the NE/IA Kiwains website at www.ne-

ia.kiwanisone.org.

Friday afternoon keynote will be Jamie Pollard, ISU Athletic Director, addressing what really mat-

ters with leadership and responsibility.

Come to a meeting or read the Bulletin to get more details about this awesome Kiwanis opportunity.

The club has budgeted funds form the administrative account to cover the cost of registration for any

member who wishes to attend. Early bird registration closes June 15. Cost is approximately $10

more after that date.

August 10 - 11 @ newly remodeled Airport Holiday Inn

Registration both days $117 ($127)

Registration Friday only $62 ($69)

Registration Saturday only $69 ($79)

We don't get to have a convention this close to home very often, so let's see if we can reach/exceed

the District Governor's goal for 10% member involvement. That is only 6 for our club - surely we can

make that ... or more!
