The mission of the Large Animal Protection Society (LAPS) is to stop cruelty to large animals in
our community. Established in 1988, LAPS is an all-volunteer nonprofit, state chartered, humane
agency that has state authority to investigate cruelty complaints and prosecute offenders in
order to enforce Pennsylvania’s animal cruelty laws in Chester, Delaware, and Lancaster
counties. LAPS’ state-trained, court-authorized, and badged Humane Society Police Officers
provide a valuable community service by intervening in suspected cases of animal cruelty involving
large animals. Similar to SPCAs that help dogs and cats, we use our facilities, equipment and
experience with horses, donkeys, cows, pigs, goats, llamas, alpacas and sheep to take action in
cases where the local, small-animal SPCA cannot.

BVDC General Membership Meeting
New Bolton Center’s Semi-Feral Pony Herd Talk & Tour by Dr. Sue McDonnell
Dr. McDonnell led a group of about 20 BVDC members & guests out to a large pasture just a mile or so from the main New Bolton Center campus. We actually stood in the midst of the pony herd while Dr. McDonnell spoke to us about the history of the herd and the interesting results of the many studies that have been undertaken over the past 20 years. We want to thank Dr. McDonnell for giving up her Sunday morning to provide us with this wonderful experience!
Here are some of the highlights of what we heard:
The herd was started in 1994 with 26 ponies (13 of each gender); currently there are 106 ponies. The original ponies came mostly from auction but some from private owners. They reside on 40 acres owned and maintained by New Bolton Center. Dr. McDonnell thought it would be a 2 to 3 year project but the herd has now been there for almost 20 years. Adult ponies have consistently been 40 to 48 inches tall. Occasionally ponies are adopted out of the herd to control the number. It is a closed herd, meaning that ponies who leave are never returned back to the herd. Mares have foals every year, sometimes beginning before they are a year old. They had two mares who were in their 30s and still foaling. Every foal is identified with pictures, a name, a case number, and DNA testing to identify its sire and dam. They initially thought there would be a problem with in-breeding but have discovered that equines have an incest avoidance mechanism that works very effectively. The initial contact between a stallion and mare when she is in-season is sniffing noses. Based on scent, the mare is apparently able to determine whether the stallion is a close relative. Mares will breed with almost any stallion but will choose those who are most distantly related. They will only in-breed if distant relatives are not available. Stallions do a lot more of the parenting than previously thought. Since the mares are busy eating (because they

are always in foal), the stallion spends time teaching the foals. Stallions are also very protective of the mare just before and during birthing; they witnessed a birth where the foal was born standing – the stallion grasped the foal by the scruff of the neck to steady it on its feet. They have studied the behavior differences between bachelor stallions and harem stallions. They observed one father who was a harem stallion and his son who was a bachelor - upon the death of the father the son took over his band. Surprisingly, health issues have been very minimal among the herd. There has been no incidence of founder or other hoof problems even though their hooves are not trimmed by a farrier. Length and shape of their hooves varies throughout the year, depending on the weather and footing (soft/wet vs. hard-packed/dry). A 2-year hoof study by farrier Laura Florence who inspected the hooves of 40 ponies on a regular basis yielded interesting results. There have not been any problems with Lyme disease or colic. Newborn foals have no Lyme titer when born but develop the same (high) level titer as their dam within an hour of suckling. Ponies are vaccinated and wormed once/year. Interestingly, they have deteremined that some of the plants they eat (such as multi-flora rose buds) are natural parasiticides. They have conducted cognitive learning tests with newborn foals and found them to be very fast learners (faster than any horse subjects they have tested). Words from the Bears 2013. . . The Bears are dancing for joy! They had such a good time at their picnic! And they found the equines dragging people around to be soooo entertaining. The Watch Bear trapped in the Outhouse sans TP was most grateful for the help. The “All Singing; All Dancing” parade was also amusing but The Bears wondered if “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” was the BVDC Anthem since most competitors were singing it! The entry singing “Camptown Races” was a welcome relief.
But the most amusement for the day was at the Ball Toss at the Pond. We even had a bunch of human spectators join us for that. Let it just be said that facing the board and throwing the ball over the equine’s head was NOT a winning strategy. . .especially since it was usually followed by a rapid and not too straight backup as the ball rebounded off the board under the equine’s feet!
The wind was really whipping all week so arrows and cones letters tended to rearrange themselves unbeknownst to the course designers. By the time the Bear Trotters got onto the course it was more like a detective game decoding what markers were left, but the Trotters took it in good stride – though some never did find Task 7!!
Of course The Bears cannot find words to thank the volunteers, who toiled all week to set up the course, tear down the course and staff all the jobs on show day! You will find all of their names on the Volunteer Thank You Page in this issue of Driving Lines. The team leaders who are listed at the top of the page really outdid themselves to make the Picnic a success. We had competitors who came early in the week to set up. We had Club members who brought friends to fill the vacant jobs. We had 42 entries confirmed on Friday, but with thrown shoes, broken trailers and sick dogs, we had 35 actually compete (22 Training, 12 Prelim and 1 Intermediate). It was really an outstanding turnout since Garden State CDE and 4-H were also going on that weekend. People who scratched really wanted to compete and many came to the Picnic anyway when they could not.
Thanks as well to our great team of Clinicians, Officials and Veterinarian who donated their day to make the Picnic a success. Their names are listed at the top of the Volunteer Page. We are truly fortunate to have such talented folks willing to share their skill and knowledge to support our training show.
Very special thanks goes to Dee Roy who started setting up Monday before the show and worked straight thru till the following Monday. A feat made even more amazing because she had just come off the disabled list after 8 weeks due to an involuntary dismount involving turkeys and low hanging tree branches! And kudos to Michelle Kromka who worked a miracle to get the picnic food on the table at noon despite overwhelming obstacles (ask her about it sometime, it’s a really funny story. . .now). And finally best wishes to Leona Baker for a speedy recovery after her unsuccessful attempt to fly. . .without at plane. We missed you, Leona!

Fall Driving in the Park
Sixteen competitors took advantage of the smorgasbord of driving fun available for all
types of equines and their humans at the Bucks County Horse Park in Revere. The morning started with a poker drive
cross country through the fall foliage. Before each turnout headed out on the Poker Drive, Joe Hobbs inspected them
to ensure their safety. Jere and Dan Hohmann, husband and son of Judy Hohmann scored the Poker Drive. Judy has
been a strong advocate for keeping driving at the Bucks County Horse Park and helped organize this event. Poker
Awards is 50% of the entry pot.

A Gambler’s Choice class was also offered in the morning. This ring switched to a Cones Course for the afternoon.
Many competitors entered in a Combined Test, doing a dressage test and cones scored together. Justin Hobbs,
Sarah Wieand and Leanne Hobbs took charge of the Gambler's Choice and Cones ring setting up, scoring and
keeping it on time.

A Choose-Your-Own dressage was available in the afternoon. Drivers
drove an assortment of Training Level and Preliminary Level tests. Several
whips took this opportunity to practice for the up coming Teddy Bear
Picnic. Mickie Bowen of Unionville ably judged the dressage with Courtney
Tomasello scribing. Cheryll Dougherty kept the competitors flowing into
dressage ring.

All events were “Come as you please” making the day very relaxed for the Whips. All flowed smoothly thanks
to the many volunteers at the Horse Park. Straight Arrow Products, LLC and Karen Schell donated Exhibitor
Bags. Sharon Ross and The Tack Works provided lovely brass business card holders to all the first place
winners. The local 4-H Club sold refreshments, snacks and horse treats. Some of the 4-H members were
fascinated by the miniature horses that came to compete and lent helpful hands to their drivers.
Thanks to the Bucks County Horse Park Maintenance Team for all of their hard work preparing the rings,
marking the trails and keeping the property looking beautiful. Volunteers from the Horse Park not only
volunteered their time with the event, they provided a lovely lunch to those who were on hand. A round of
applause goes to Judy Hohmann, Becky Merritt, Kelly Soldavin and Leanne Hobbs for organizing and running
this wonderful event.
Heidi Ferguson, the ADS Mid Atlantic representative visited the Bucks County Horse Park for the first
time. She spent the day watching the classes and visiting with the competitors. Later Heidi had a guided
tour of the beautiful trails, a major part of the park. The BCHP is fortunate to have generous land-owners
who provide additional trails.

“Magic of Christmas Parade” Planned for Historic Salem, NJ - Sat. Dec 7th
The chairman of the parade committee has expressed interest in the participation of horse drawn carriages. Members of both the GSH&CS and BVDC clubs have been asked to consider driving in the parade and to spread the word to other local area carriage drivers!
Plans for the “Magic of Christmas” Parade to be held on Saturday December 7, 2013 in downtown Salem City are coming together as the Parade Committee finalizes details for this outstanding holiday event. There will be local companies and banks, high school marching bands, dance academies, cartoon characters, floats and of course Santa Claus!
The parade begins at 11AM at Fourth Street, and marches down Broadway to it’s end around Johnson Street. The day continues with our “Yuletide Tour” at 1 PM, which is a tour of local historic homes and churches. The day concludes with the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree at 6PM at the old Courthouse (corner of Broadway and Market Street). Santa will arrive on one of Salem’s fire trucks to light the tree.
