Theme

Recognizing the needs of disadvantaged children in Collier County and the non-profit organizations that meet these needs.

Goals

• Define Human Services and the explicit needs of children. Children are some of the most vulnerable,if not the most vulnerable, in our county and are certainly our future.

• Identify opportunities for involvement and how GNL members can make an impact.

Objectives

• Provide face-to-face meetings with leaders of non-profits who are eager for volunteers.

• Instill an understanding of the critical role of volunteering and fundraising in meeting needs.

• Encourage GNL members to act.

There his culinary experiences and influence from his time in the south and in Europe were showcased on its menu with a mix of southern favorites and traditional European dishes. This eclectic mix of culinary delights provided a gastronomic experience that satisfied all appetites. Before accepting the position of Executive Chef, Kristofer had volunteered his talent and time to the kitchen of St. Matthew’s House in support of its mission to feed the hungry. In 2013, he accepted a position as the Executive Chef for the feeding ministry and SMH Catering. Kristofer passionately delivers dignified meals to every man, woman, and child who call St. Matthew’s House home. Donna C. Kordek Volunteer Guardian Ad Litem and Recruiter for the Guardian ad Litem Program

Donna Kordek moved to Naples 15 years ago from Park Ridge, Illinois, with her husband Ed Logazino. Six years ago, Donna became both a Volunteer Guardian and the Volunteer Recruiter for the Guardian ad Litem Program in Collier County. She works hard to find additional volunteers who will become a voice for children, age newborn to 18 years of age. Identifying volunteers in Collier County who will work with abused or neglected children is her main objective and goal; she feels strongly that every abused or neglected child deserves to have someone who can look out for his or her best interest.

In January 2010, she became a full time member of the NTRC family as Program Administrator. Currently, Missy serves as NTRC’s Program Director. Missy grew up in State College, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Penn State University with a B.S. in Recreation, Parks and Tourism Management, with an emphasis in Commercial and Community Recreation. While attending Penn State, she was the Commercial and Community Chair for the Recreation and Parks Management Student Society, a member of the Penn State Equestrian Team and on the “Morale” Team for the largest student-run philanthropy, Penn State’s Dance Marathon, an organization that dedicates time and efforts to helping children with cancer. Her past work experiences in Collier County include working with the Marco Island YMCA as the Tennis and Sports Program Coordinator as well as working with American Hospitality Academy. Angela Melvin Founder, Valerie’s House Born and raised in Fort Myers, Angela Melvin is the Founder of Valerie’s House, an organization based on a successful national model that provides a loving place where children and families who have lost a loved one can grieve together and learn the tools to “go on” and live successful lives. As a 10-year-old, Angela lost her mother to a car accident. With the help of a strong family structure and father figure, she went on to build a successful career and life despite her tragedy. But Angela knows that she is an exception to the rule. Statistically, many children of loss flounder in life because they do not have a chance to deal with their early loss and heal. Yet, even today Angela says, “With a place like Valerie’s House, I would have connected with children like me and it could have made all the difference in my healing.” Angela is an experienced non-profit leader who has built and revitalized several non-profit organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) in Panama City and Sun Coast, Florida. More recently, she was Executive Director of Uncommon Friends Foundation in Fort Myers. All these positions presented unique challenges, as Angela guided the organizations to overcome hurdles and thrive. Prior to working in the non-profit world, Angela spent 10 years as an on-air television news reporter, and as Communications Director for a congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. Angela was honored as a News-Press "Person of the Year" Finalist in 2016, and named a Gulfshore Business "40 under 40" in 2015. She holds a Bachelor of Science, Journalism and Communications, University of Florida (Gainesville).

Thomas Bamrick Executive Director, Gargiulo Educational Center Mr. Bamrick is Executive Director of Gargiulo Educational Center. He has 40 years of professional experience combining service in non-profit organizations, including private and public schools, a statewide human services agency, and a community child care resource agency. Thomas has been a resident of Naples since 1989. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Sociology and in School Administration & Supervision from Queens College of the City University of New York, and a Master of Arts degree in Sociology of Education from Teacher’s College of Columbia University (New York). Judy Evans, Founder Founder, MusicScores! After 38 successful years of teaching children in Ohio and Florida, Judy Evans became intrigued with brain research. At the time, studies showed that the left and right brain actually become better connected if a child plays the violin or piano before the age of 5, and that this physiological development enables the child to use more of his or her potential. So was born the idea that would take Judy into the next phase of her career – founding a Pre-K Literacy/ Violin Program that provides low income children a greater chance to succeed in school. The program is designed to help children learn how to develop their language, listening, social, developmental and motor skills, and dramatically increase their kindergarten readiness. Early qualitative and quantitative data suggest the program enhances performance in school and on standardized tests, as well as increasing student motor and social skills and parental involvement. Paul Conklin Director, Fran Cohen Youth Center

Paul Conklin is a native of Hurley, New Mexico. He obtained his Bachelors in Educational Psychology at New Mexico State. It was in college that Paul found his passion for mentoring and developing youth as an afterschool counselor and later an eighth grade wrestling coach. Once graduated he found career opportunities in Dallas, Texas.

There he started his professional career as a Daycare Director for the Children’s Courtyard. He then moved positions to Emler Swim School as an Aquatics Director and wrote curriculum to help serve children and adults with special needs who were fearful around water.

Paul was with the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas for 8 years serving as the Associate Executive Director in charge of operations for The T. Boone Pickens YMCA in Downtown Dallas. He was Corporate Sales Director for all 23 branches of the YMCA in Dallas. His accomplishments in this role include oversight of the renovation for the T. Boone Pickens YMCA. He oversaw The Dallas Turkey Trot which is the world’s largest Y activity that has an annual attendance of 35,000 runners. Paul also served on the Dallas Mayor’s healthy living taskforce where he implemented and organized the first ever Uptown Dallas Cyclovia in May 2013. Paul came to Florida to serve as the Executive Director of the Greater Naples YMCA and assist in the programming efforts after the YMCA fire. He helped spearhead the growth of the YMCA to well over 11,000 members.

Valerie’s House is a PREVENTIVE organization and we know from studies that this approach works with children.

WHAT CRITICAL NEED DO YOU MEET FOR CHILDREN IN COLLIER COUNTY? About one in four children in Collier County will find themselves without food this year. They represent about 25% of the people we serve. Many of these children are in working families. Their parents hold multiple jobs, and barely make ends meet. Private sources, including retail donors, food wholesalers and manufacturers, foundations, and individual donors. WHAT DO YOU NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR? Our volunteers find new connections to the work we do and the impact it has on families in our community. They gain an increased understanding of the needs in our community. They build relationships with other volunteers and with those they serve. They enjoy themselves and find the work engaging and fulfilling. Charity Navigator has awarded the Food Bank 4 stars (its highest rating) for 8 years in a row.

NAME OF ORGANIZATION: Friends of Foster Children Forever

ORGANIZATION WEBSITE: www.friendsoffosterchildren.net

MISSION OF ORGANIZATION: To focus on the children we serve with targeted educational and enrichment opportunities that allow each child to fulfill his or her potential.

WHAT CRITICAL NEED DO YOU MEET FOR CHILDREN IN COLLIER COUNTY? We provide a continuum of educational support for foster children from birth to graduation and beyond. Our goal is to help the children thrive -- not just survive the ordeal of being a foster child. We help the children do well in school and develop a belief in themselves and their own potential for success. We serve all foster children placed in Collier County, including those sheltered at Youth Haven. We also serve foster children in Hendry & Glades Counties.

WHAT IS YOUR ANNUAL BUDGET? $1,037,000

WHERE DOES MOST OF YOUR FUNDING COME FROM? Two thirds of the funding needs to be raised through individual grant applications, fundraising events and Annual Campaign activities. One third has previously been raised through application to the Naples Children & Education Foundation. FFCF is a privately funded nonprofit independent of welfare, judicial and school systems and receives no government funding.

WHAT DO YOU NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR? Chaperones for field trips and other events; Fundraising Gurus, to help raise money at fundraising events; Organizing, stocking and packing of supplies for the children and caregivers; Managing booths at the Back-to-School Fair and the Sunshine 5K Run.

WHY SHOULD SOMEONE VOLUNTEER AT YOUR ORGANIZATION? This very much depends on what each volunteer is hoping to gain from the experience. If the goal is to have a meaningful positive impact on the well-being of a foster child, then the very best recommendation would be to become a Guardian ad Litem (GAL). GALS advocate for a foster child’s best interests in the courts, the welfare system and the community. (See GAL Fact Sheet for further information.)
