    EDITORS LE TTER

HANGING ONTO SUMMERWith Issue 9 of SESSIONS Magazine beingreleased at a time when the days are becoming

shorter and summer is coming to an end, I was

denitely hanging on to some elements of the warm

weather, and I dont mean my Birkenstocks. Dont

get me wrong, one of the things I love about living in

Canada is the diversity between the seasons, and in

Issue 9 of SESSIONS Magazine I tried to transition

from light to dark in a way that I felt was really easy

    on the eyes.

There are a few photo series this month that took my

breath away when they landed in my mailbox, andeven now as I see them in my layouts. A collection of

fashion portraits by Janine Joffe on page 19, entitled

In A Reverie, was one that had that ere of late summer,

like you could almost smell the cool air in the garden

pictured. I found these extremely inspiring, so much so

that I dug out my camera, phoned up a friend of mine

who is a model, and hit the streets to get my photo x!

I dont shoot as often as I used to, but I still love that

feeling when I see that perfect shot through my lens,

and know that it was worth it to get out there.

I think that the October geared submissions we

received really add to the seasonal transition of images

within the magazine. Two series that I nd really eye

catching are The Dark Arts by Kira Bucca on page 113,

and Collaredby Morgan Chidsey on page 187. Buccas

photos take a conventional beauty accessories story

and turn it on its head, making an almost intense use

of makeup and the models expressions. Chidsey uses

cool tones and sharp contrast to create a timeless series

that feels intimate and voyeuristic at the same time.

The written word can be wonderful when paired

with photographs, and articles are something that we

hope to receive more and more of. Pouyan Fard, a

videographer from Toronto, wrote on an interesting

and familiar topic of video in the fashion industry. In

Fashion in Motion on page 71, Fard isnt talking about

footage of models strutting down a runway but videos

as an individual artistic piece different from the fashion

photo shoot. Something to consider when youreplanning your next editorial.

Traditional art also makes another appearance, with

illustrations from Arber Thano on page 199 and Susie

Loow on page 49, both of whom have very unique

styles. Loow sketches and paints her interpretation of

fashion design giants Dior and Valentino, which land

somewhere between a design sketch and a painting

begging to be framed and displayed, while Thanos

illustrations express his thought provoking emotions

and opinions on political and social events throughout

    the world.

With a new season comes new opportunities

for inspiration and creativity, and with Issue 9

of SESSIONS Magazine I hope that you feel the

transition from bright to light, and feel the urge to

make the most of these nal days of summer.

    ERIN ELIZABETH KELLY

Occupation: Graphic Designer / Fine Artist

    City: New York City

Years in the Biz: 3 years

Inspired by: For starters you have to be

honest with yourself because that's where

the best art comes from. I am often inspired

by the smallest things in life (e.g. someones

smile, a ower, tears, the sky, the c louds, sounds) but someones life can also be

inspirational. I think my best work has

come from overcoming life challenges. I

    experience the greatest accomplishment

when I am holding a completed art piece

that represents a snap shot of the world. The

biggest challenge with my type of art is

integrating on paper everything that is

racing through my head. I continue to be

inspired by the fact that anyone can make

up their own story using my art work. It is

one thing to have a talent for imagination

but it's a whole different talent to put it

    down on paper.

Describe your artistic style: My style has

    been described as "Intensive Graphics"

by RAW Natural Born Artists. It consists

mostly of symbols and recognizable objects

that tell a story. The biggest challenge is not

coming up with the topic or the symbols

to tell that story, but actually p utting

my thoughts and feelings on paper and

connecting them all together. Each art piece

is original and there are no rough-drafts.

    Upcoming exhibitions: September 13 I

have a showcase in Downtown Brooklyn

which is organized by RAW Natural Born

Artists. This will be my second one within

    the last two months.

    Occupation: Photographer

    City: Tokyo, Japan

    Years in the Biz:

    Three and a half years

    Describe your photographic style:

    The natural fashion photograph

    which does not dress up.

    Upcoming exhibitions: I am

planning an exhibition in Tokyo at

the end of October. Much dark news

    is taking place recently, politics

and the fashion are related deeply,

however, I want to express bright

    news with my photographs.

    TOMOKAZU HAMADA

    City: Orlando, Florida

    Years in the Biz: 3

    Inspired by:photographers:

    Helmut Newton, Francesco

    Scavullo

    Describe your photographic

    style: I love the connection

of nature with my models. I

would say that my work is

visual poetry. I try to capture

    the beauty in each persons

    soul that I photography.

    Upcoming Editiorials:

    Editorial with Ponte Vedra

    Living Magazine. Fashion

    Editorial with Floridan View

    Magazine and Floridian Bride

    and cover.

    JANINE JOFFE

    Occupation:

    Photographer

    City: New Orleans,

    Louisiana

    Years in the Biz:

Ive been shooting for 7-8 years, but professionally for 2.

Inspired by: After moving to New Orleans in 2011, I

have often found myself inspired by the environment

around me. There are so many diamonds in the rough

    - its hard to not be inspired by such unusual locations!

And of course, I am continuously inspired by many

the photographers I look up to such as Miles Aldridge,

Slve Sundsbo, Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott, Ellen Von

Unwerth (just to name a few).

Describe your photographic style: From the time I

rst picked up a camera, I have always maintained a

dark aesthetic. Over time, my visions developed and

now, my photos have a stronger sense of structure,

sophistication and raw emotion. I would loosely dene

my photographic style as being romantic with a dark,

    quirky edge.

Any artists in your family or ancestry?: My mother was

an opera singer (now turned actress), and my father is

an instrumental musician. I think its safe to say I had a

    rather creative upbringing.

Upcoming editorials: Keep an eye out for my spread, In

Dreams of Mine coming out in Kenton Magazine the

    rst week of October.

    Artwork by SUSIE LOOW

Susie Loow is an architecture graduate with

a great interest in illustration. Her work

usually lingers around a combination of text

and imagery. Cover and campaign artwork,

posters and illustrations make up her recent

    list of work.

For these pieces, Susie was browsing for

new illustration ideas when she found Diors

mesmerizing pieces. She started with a

few simple drawings and they snowballed

from there, soon discovering that Valentino

was another designer to be considered for

this series. To execute, she used her usual

technique and developed her own Haute

    Couture illustration style.
