Purpose of this Lesson:

To help you get excited about your future

andUnderstand that goals will help you live a happier,

healthier, & potentially wealthier life!

What is a goal? A GOAL is a well-defined target that

gives you clarity, direction, motivation, and focus.

Only 5%-10% of people think about goals on a regular basis!

Only 1%-3% have clear written goals!

Why bother?

Goals provide a way to focus, concentrate, and spend your time and energy on carefully chosen targets that are designed to make positive impacts on your life!

Purpose of setting goals Goals help you:

1) Make a positive change in your life2) Form a new habit or change an existing habit3) Improve or develop a skill, talent, or ability4) Realize a dream or other important outcome5) Improve your performance on a task or activity

Short-term Goals Examples: I will get an ‘A’ on tomorrow’s math test. I will finish all of my homework every night this week. I will smile at someone I don’t know every day this week. I will write down assignments for every class this week. I will only say positive things this week (no gossip!) I will read at least 20 minutes per day for fun. I will sleep for at least 8 hours each night.

Long-term Goals Examples: I will get all A’s and B’s this year. I will workout at least 3 times per week. I will make responsible decisions. I will be prepared for my classes all year long. I will graduate from high school on time. I will go to college/CTC/military, etc. I will get up as soon as my alarm clock rings

for the entire school year.

Short Term & Long Term Goals

It is important to have both in life! For this class, you’ll choose 2 different

goals (academic & personal) that you’d like to achieve by the end of MP1.

Who Am I? Grew up in in poverty in rural Mississippi to two teenage parents Was molested as a young girl and turned to drugs and alcohol for comfort Made a decision to get sober and landed a job as a reporter with a local TV

station Now the richest and most powerful woman in television

Who Am I? I was cut from my high school basketball team. I was so upset that I went home, locked myself in my room, and cried.

In order for something to be a goal:

It has to be important to you!

It has to be within your power to make it happen through your own actions.

It must be clearly defined.

It must have a specific plan of action.

It has to be realistic & something you have a reasonable chance of achieving.

Imagine your goals… Close your Think about a goal you would like to

What is it you would like to achieve? What do you need to do to make it happen? Can you make it happen by the end of MP1? Will anything get in your way? If so, how you can you overcome that obstacle? Will you tell anyone about it?

S: SPECIFIC Goals must be specific and able to achieved by the

end of MP1. For example:

Don’t say, “My goal is to study”. Instead, “I will study at least 3 nights per week for 15 mins”

My goal is to… Get a B or better in every class for MP1 Hand in ALL assignments Write every single assignment in my planner Talk about how I’m feeling when I’m frustrated Read1/2 hour every night Say 2 nice things to my parents every day Get at least 8 hours of sleep every night
