Setting Professional Goals

Fall 2007

Staff In-service

Page 2: Setting Professional Goals

Perspectives on Goals Life takes on meaning when you become

motivated, set goals and charge after them in an unstoppable manner.

Man is a goal seeking animal. His life only has meaning if he is reaching out and striving for his goals.

Many people fail in life, not for lack of ability or brains or even courage but simply because they have never organized their energies around a goal.

Page 3: Setting Professional Goals

Perspectives on Goals When a goal matters enough to a person,

that person will find a way to accomplish what at first seemed impossible.

You are the person who has to decide. Whether you'll do it or toss it aside; you are the person who makes up your mind. Whether you'll lead or will linger behind. Whether you'll try for the goal that's afar. Or just be contented to stay where you are.

If you want to achieve a high goal, you're going to have to take some chances.

A goal not written down is simply a wish.

Reasons we put off goal setting Task too

big….where do I begin?

Lack of time to organize/write them down.

Fear of failing. Fear of success.

Specific A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished

than a general goal. To set a specific goal you must answer the six "W" questions:

Who:  Who is involved? What:  What do I want to accomplish? Where: Identify a location. When:  Establish a time frame. Which:  Identify requirements and constraints. Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.

Examples of Specific Goals By the end of the 2007-2008 school

year I will complete 6 hours of graduate credit courses.

By the end of the 2007-2008 I will have all of my lesson plans/curriculum organized digitally.

Page 8: Setting Professional Goals

Measurable Measurable - Establish concrete criteria for measuring

progress toward the attainment of each goal you set. When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued effort required to reach your goal.

To determine if your goal is measurable, ask questions. How much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished?

Page 9: Setting Professional Goals

Attainable Identify goals that are most important to you, you begin to

figure out ways you can make them come true. You can attain most any goal you set when you plan your

steps wisely and establish a time frame that allows you to carry out those steps.

Goals that may have seemed far away and out of reach eventually move closer and become attainable, not because your goals shrink, but because you grow and expand to match them.

When you list your goals you build your self-image. You see yourself as worthy of these goals, and develop the traits and personality that allow you to possess them.

Page 10: Setting Professional Goals

Realistic You must be willing

and able to work toward the goal.

Goal should represent substantial progress.

You must believe you can reach your goal.

Page 11: Setting Professional Goals

Timely Must set time limits on

goals. Time limit must be

specific. Examples: By the end

of the quarter, by the end of the semester, by the end of the school year

Page 12: Setting Professional Goals

Process Write up at least one goal that you want to

accomplish by the end of this school year. Access the “Zeus” public folder and open the goal

template. (See handout for step by step guide to this procedure.)

Insert your information in the template and save with your first and last name.

Print a copy to have as a reminder of your goals!

Final thoughts on goals….. It is OK to not achieve all of your goals. Do not cheat yourself by going back and

altering them to meet the time frame. Post your goals where at the very least you

can see them everyday. Post them where your colleagues can read

them. (This is a very powerful motivator!)
