What can replace a Sunday morning cup of tea and splitting the paper with your family? Or listening to the 6 o’clock news while dinner’s getting ready?

What creates a successful front page though?

In our mass media society there is so much competition for sales, readership and ratings.

How do the top papers and TV stations attract their customers and stay ahead of the rest?

Your mission…

You are a news corporation and have a deadline to meet for your next front page/ program. You need to use teamwork to come up with a concept for your paper or show and produce the page/show on time.

You will also need to explain your process and the key decisions you have made.

Presentation Mode Options High Tech

Students may produce a 2.5 - 5 minute video which is the starting segment of a TV news program.

Low TechStudents may produce a newspaper front cover using IT such as Microsoft Office (Publisher or Word) or similar.

No Tech

Students may hand-make a poster style front page using a combination of printed and hand drawn material.

Assessment

1. Define Define your market

School? Local community? State? National?

Define your target audience.

Come up with a News Corporation name

What will be the focus/ lead story of your front page/ TV show? Come up with at least two ideas.

2. DiscoverNow you have a few ideas in mind,

you will need to research front pages/ news programs.

Find at least 3 examples and evaluate what components they have and how they’re done.

What is the best example and why?Make a list of all its good features.

3. Dream

Brainstorm and discuss all the possibilities for your group’s final product.

You might want to elect a scribe or use a mind map to record ideas.

4. Design Groups will need to delegate roles and

tasks. Roles recommended for this task are:

Editor/ director Journalist Photographer/ Camera person Marketing News reader – if doing TV option

The way you plan and organise your group is up to you. Just remember to work within the boundaries set (see earlier slides regarding time limits, presentation modes, deadline and rubrics). See Daymap for this Powerpoint.

5. Deliver - Produce

Create, edit and finalise your product and group presentation.

Don’t forget to use self-evaluation before editing to improve your work (ie. use the task instructions and rubrics to check you have covered everything to the best of your ability).

7. Deliver - PublishDisplay newspaper front page/

screen TV opening segment and deliver your group presentation.

Your group presentation must cover the assigned topics.

This step will also include you evaluating other presentation and sharing feedback with another group.

8. Debrief

Self-evaluate your presentation.

Return to original Learning Assumption questions and answer them again.
