QUEEN ELIZABETH - THE WAIT IS OVER • QUEEN ELIZABETH - THE WAIT IS OVER QUEEN ELIZABETH - THE WAIT IS OVER •QUEEN ELIZABETH - THE WAIT IS OVER

On Friday 8 October, after all the months of

media coverage and widespread anticipation,

Southampton caught its first ever glimpse of

Queen Elizabeth, the latest Cunard ship to

carry the city’s name around the globe. The inky

darkness that lingered as she passed the Isle of

Wight soon gave way to a pale morning light, and

she emerged from the mist to reward the hundreds

who had gathered along Southampton Water in

the early hours, patiently waiting to see this

magnificent vessel with their own eyes.

A small flotilla had gathered to escort the final stages of herreturn from the Fincantieri shipyard in northeastern Italy:fireboats sprayed powerful jets of water up into the air andother vessels blasted their whistles. A helicopter buzzedoverhead, flag-waving guests lined the decks on the otherships in port, and people sought out all manner of vantagepoints to find the best view. All looked on eagerly as the sixthever Cunard Queen passed Mayflower Park at 7.45ambefore berthing at the Ocean Terminal in the Eastern Docksat around 9am, as the early sun cast a golden glow ontoher sides.

Queen Elizabeth had arrived home.

It was a homecoming that began over a week earlier whenCunard officially took ownership of our new ship at aceremony in Monfalcone on Thursday 30 October. Shortlyafter the signing of the final documents, the Italian flag thathad fluttered on the main mast was slowly lowered; to take itsplace, Third Officer Matthew Wilson raised the Red Ensign, the emblem of the British Merchant Navy. Then Captain Wellsascended to the bridge – his bridge – to announce thatQueen Elizabeth now belonged to Cunard. At this,a huge cheer resonated around the decks, and Cunard’sEngineers and Deck Officers busied themselves. They werenow at the controls.

Once the crew had made all the necessary preparations,Captain Wells invited them to gather on deck to witness themoments when the last lines were released for departure. At around 3.30 that afternoon, Queen Elizabeth’s newMaster guided her away from her berth toward the AdriaticSea. Meanwhile, everyone aboard showed their gratitude byraising a huge, heartfelt cheer in honour of the Fincantierishipyard workers, who were now waving farewell to the shipto which they had given so much.

Yet there was plenty of work still to do. Eight days separatedQueen Elizabeth from Southampton, during which timeskilled craftsmen put the finishing touches to the elegantrestaurants and lounges to ensure that she arrived looking herbest, and the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Companycarried out their final rehearsals. After all, two very importantappointments lay ahead – the Naming Ceremony and herMaiden Voyage.

QUEEN ELIZABETHMonday 11 October was the moment we had all been waiting for. A royal occasion no less.

Glorious blue sky stretched over the Ocean Terminal in Southampton. And Her Majesty The Queen

arrived to bestow an enormous honour: naming our newest ship at a wonderful ceremony that will live

long in the memory of all present.

Once the royal car had completed its stately progresstowards the gleaming new Cunard ship, a very special tourbegan. After offering a warm welcome, Captain Wells showedHer Majesty around the bridge; as Her Majesty pushed thebutton that sounded the ship’s mighty whistle, two thousandgathered guests gasped and laughed outside, realising thatthey were watching a live feed on the big screen.

Her Majesty had taken the tour party by surprise by requestingan extra stop along her itinerary to look inside one of thesuites. Then the 800-seat Royal Court Theatre beckoned, where Her Majesty officially acknowledged one of the16 private boxes as the Royal Box.

Reaching the majestic Grand Lobby, Her Majesty graciouslyappreciated the cheers and applause of the assembled crewwho looked on in admiration from its three levels. There was,of course, a pause to admire two signature artworks in residencehere: a resplendent marquetry panel depicting the original

Queen Elizabeth, designed by Her Majesty’s only nephew,David Linley; then Her Majesty’s own portrait and a meetingwith its talented painter, Isobel Peachey. Her Majesty then left awonderful record of this historic visit, as her signature becamethe first to grace Queen Elizabeth’s guest book.

“Reaching the majesticGrand Lobby, Her Majestygraciously appreciated thecheers and applause of theassembled crew who lookedon in admiration from itsthree levels”

With that, the royal party descended to the dockside, whereCunard’s President and Managing Director, Peter Shanks, spokepassionately about Cunard’s history and Her Majesty’s closeassociation with our ships. Anthony Inglis and the Band of theColdstream Guards led a powerful rendition of ‘God Save TheQueen’, that we’re sure provoked more than a few tearful eyes. And then the moment itself. Captain Wells invited Her Majestyto the lectern. Our monarch rose. Two thousand guests heldtheir breath.

“I name this ship Queen Elizabeth. May God bless her andall who sail in her.”

With those famous words, Her Majesty pressed the button thatsent the Jeroboam of Cunard's private label Baron de Rothschild2009 white wine crashing onto the starboard side of the ship.It smashed dramatically against the ‘Q’ of her name. Streamersswirled around that magnificent silhouette, pipers played andsmiles beamed everywhere. Amidst all this incredible celebration,Her Majesty left to rapturous applause.

We were thrilled and honoured to receive a letter fromHer Majesty in which she said “Thank you and Captain Wellsfor such a colourful and memorable occasion” – a perfectacknowledgement of another momentous day in ourillustrious history.

Southampton was still buzzing from the royalpomp and pageantry of the previous day when,on 12 October,Queen Elizabeth edged awayfrom her home port on a maiden voyage that,18 months earlier, had sold out in just 29 minutes. With Iberia and the Canary Isles counting downto her visit,Queen Elizabeth was now aserving Cunarder.

A band of the Prince of Wales’s Division played on thequay asQUeen Elizabeth slipped away at around5.00pm, carrying the fortunate two thousand or so guestsand escorted along the Solent by an assortment of smallervessels. As you would expect, it was a celebratory moodon board, and each new port merely enhanced the senseof occasion.

‘Where wasQueen Elizabeth’s first-ever call?’ mayone day be a Golden Lion Pub quiz question. The answeris Vigo in northern Spain, on 14 October. Ship and cityadmired one another, with guests stepping ashore and theSpanish media and excited residents gathering to see theiresteemed visitor. IndeedQueen Elizabeth collectedone of her first souvenirs at a customary plaque exchange

with the port authoritiesand local VIPs onboard. Then it was amemorable introductionto Lisbon where, as ifbasking in the attention, our new Queen berthedin a wonderfully photogenicspot next to the 25 deAbril Bridge.

The following day, inCadiz, we were honouredthat Sir David Frost and hiswife Lady Carina Frostwere able to step aboard.Arguably the definitivetelevision interviewer of anygeneration, Sir David has

over 4,000 interviews to his name – almost double the number ofguests on board. His subjects have been as diverse as WoodyAllen, Muhammad Ali and the Beatles, yet it is his political work that is mostwidely known, not least thelegendary verbal skirmish withPresident Nixon that has beenimmortalised on stage andscreen. In the RoyalCourt Theatre,Sir David turnedthe spotlighton himself.

His talk entitled ‘Interviews I Shall Never Forget’captivated an entire audience with insightfulrecollections and laugh-out-loud anecdotes. He left anequally indelible impression in our new ship’s guestbook, writing only the second message onto its pages.

AsQueen Elizabeth left the Iberian mainland, shehosted a first proposal of marriage on board – warmcongratulations to Jim McCracken, Mayor of FreedomTownship in New Jersey, and his new fiancée,Lisa Lehman from Pennsylvania! Soon enough, our newship was basking in the warmth of the Atlantic Isles.Aside from the now familiar flotillas,Gran Canariagave our newest ship a lively send-off, courtesy of aparade of beeping classic cars and crackling fireworks. The next day on Tenerife, guests looked on as soldiers intraditional uniform saluted us with two volleys of musket fire.

After La Palma,Madeira provided the final call, as well as atorrential downpour, the first bad weather of the voyage. However, the rain clouds certainly had a fabulous silver lining instore, as Lulu paid us a visit for two roof-raising performances inthe Royal Court Theatre. Having thrilled her audience withenergetic renditions of classics like ‘Shout’, she introduced a

special guest, Kiki Dee, andeven donned an Elton John-style hat and sunglasses for aduet of ‘Don’t Go Breaking MyHeart’! With two morecelebrity signatures added tothe guest book, they said theirgoodbyes. Lulu commentedthat she’d loved every minuteand even sang as shedescended the gangway, much to the delight of thewatching guests.

There was just timeto add anotherone-off masterpiece toQueen Elizabeth’s incredible art collection. Respectedmodern impressionist, Sherree Valentine Daines was on board todiscuss her work and, on the penultimate day at sea, painted aportrait of Captain Wells in the Garden Lounge, which went ondisplay in the Art Gallery the following day.

And then it was time for ournew Queen to return hometo Southampton, wherehappy guests departed withcountless memories andseveral mementos, includinga printed Maiden Voyageguest list and certificates, souvenir books and asilver medal.

PLAN YOUR PERFECTTRANSATLANTIC CROSSING IN 2011

The city that never sleeps. The Big Apple. The city so goodthey named it twice. A list ofnicknames taller than anyskyscraper merely hints atNew York’s non-stop energy andart deco grandeur. And shouldyou yearn to tread thosecelebrated sidewalks, anotherapt description of New Yorkcould be ‘Queen Mary 2’ssecond home’.

Our flagship still offers the onlyscheduled service between Southamptonand New York. In 2011 she embarkson 20 Transatlantic Crossings, eachbeginning or ending in this most dynamicof destinations. It’s the ideal opportunityto set eyes on some of its most

magnificent sights. If we were to list ourfavourites, we may choose the steel-cladChrysler Building, which glints sophotogenically at sunset or the quirkytriangular profile that gave the FlatironBuilding its name. Be mesmerised by theever-changing patterns created by theweb of steel cables held in place bythe gothic arches of Brooklyn Bridge, ormarvel at the beautiful, cavernous interiorof Grand Central Station, all marblesand dark woods beneath its soaring, vaulted ceiling.

“Our flagship still offersthe only scheduledservice betweenSouthampton andNew York. In 2011she embarks on 20Transatlantic Crossings.”

Yet the way to really appreciate moreof what New York has to offer is to staya little longer. After all, staying twonights opens up a realm of extrapossibilities and perspectives. There’smore time, for instance, to comparebreathtaking viewpoints, whether fromthe Empire State Building’s observationdecks or atop the Rockefeller Centre.Take the horse and carriage ride throughthe verdant surroundings of Central Park.Circle Manhattan Island by boat. Orswoop above all the bustle by taking anunforgettable helicopter ride, perhapseven at night when the grid of streetsand avenues stretches out likethe constellations.

Of course, a short break herealso opens up a dizzying array ofworld-class entertainment possibilities.Choose to hear the strains of aworld-renowned orchestra at CarnegieHall or Lincoln Center, whose residentsinclude the New York Philharmonic andNew York City Ballet. Take your seat for

an acclaimed production in Radio CityMusical Hall or at one of Broadway’satmospheric theatres. You could evenuncover Manhattan’s jazz heartbeat asyou reserve your table at a legendaryvenue like the Blue Note, the VillageVanguard or Birdland, where the sultrydécor resounds with the swinging soundsof the bass, trumpet and guitar.

Finally, don’t forget your shopping list!Browse entire districts, from bustlingChinatown, with its herbal markets, to theantique shops and bookstores ofGreenwich Village. Peruse designernames at Columbus Circle Mall, whereviews extend across Central Park, orbeside the East River at the South StreetSeaport, which incorporates innovativeexhibition spaces alongside a who’s whoof retail names. You may even step insideManhattan stores that are the stuff oflegend: such as Tiffany and Co orupmarket Bergdorf Goodman on FifthAvenue. FOUR MEN IN A BOATThere’s more than one way to cross

the Atlantic, as our guests aboard

Queen Mary 2 discovered during

an eastbound crossing in July.

Following a chance conversation,Captain Bates had heard of an attemptto break a 114-year record for rowingthe 3,250-odd miles between BatteryPark, Manhattan, and the Scilly Isles, setby two Norwegian fishermen. A call tothe team’s HQ revealed that the intrepidquartet in the boat Artemis Investments– Leven Brown (37), Don Lennox (41),

Ray Carroll (33) and Livar Nysted (39)– were on a similar course. Incidentally,Ray used to work on our flagship!

On Sunday 24 July, we madecontact. Over the years, Captain Bates has endeared himself to guestsand colleagues alike, thanks to his incredible warmth, charm, friendliness, and great sense of humour – we’re sure everyonewill fondly remember the whimsical sayings of his alter ego,

Patrick O’Shaughnessy! Naturally it seemedright to give him a suitable send-off.

Guests had an opportunity to wish him wellduring his final voyage amidst Norway’s

fjords. During the Cunard World ClubBall, we presented him with a beautiful

silver and crystal decanter and apainting of QE2 and our flagship,Queen Mary 2. It was the first timemany of those in attendance had seen

Captain Bates lost for words!

On his final day at sea, the ship’s company honouredCaptain Bates in the Crew Mess, bringing hundreds of giftsand kind words, before a celebratory farewell party thatevening. Then, on 28 August 2010, Captain Bates walkeddown Queen Mary 2’s gangway for the final time as theship’s Master, before being whisked away in a waiting car.Happy retirement, Captain Bates, and thank you for everything.

Thank You, Captain BatesWe’re sure you’ll join us in wishing Captain Nick Bates an
